Chapter 2

I told my manager I had a family emergency, which wasn’t entirely a lie because Priya is family in every way that counts.

He said to take whatever time I needed, and I felt guilty for about four seconds. Then I went home, packed a bag, and didn't look at the bedroom for longer than necessary.

We left on a Thursday morning.

Priya drove because she said I was in no state to, and she was right. I kept zoning out in the passenger seat, watching the city thin out into highway and then into the kind of open flat land that makes you realize how compressed city living actually is.

I had forgotten that space existed like this.

That you could look out and see the actual horizon.

“How long has it been since you went back?” I asked her.

“Three years.” She kept her eyes on the road. “Maybe four.”

“That’s a long time.”

“Wrenfield doesn’t really change,” she said. “That’s the thing about it. It's magical.”

I smiled at her then slept for the most part of the drive.

Real sleep.

The heavy kind, which surprised me because I hadn’t slept properly since I found them.

I woke up when the car slowed and the road changed texture, and I looked out the window and felt something shift in my chest.

The town was not what I expected.

When Priya said "small town," I pictured something tired and run-down with a gas station and maybe a diner.

Wrenfield was not that it really did look magical but with tall trees and forest surrounding it.

It was clean in a way that felt deliberate. The buildings were old but maintained, the streets wide, and the trees looked like they had been there forever, with roots probably breaking up the concrete underneath.

There were people walking around. Not many, but some.

And they looked...

I don’t know how to say this exactly.

They looked arranged.

Like everyone knew where to be.

“It’s pretty,” I said.

“Yeah.”

Priya said it without much feeling, which I noted.

We drove slowly through what I assumed was the main part of town, and I rolled my window down because the air genuinely smelled different.

Green and cold.

And something else underneath that I couldn’t name.

A woman walking on the pavement glanced at the car and then looked again, longer this time, her eyes finding me specifically as if I was a ghost. weird.

We stopped at a light.

A man on a bicycle slowed beside us, looked straight at me through the open window, and made a face that I can only describe as confusion mixed with something alert.

Like a dog that hears a sound.

“That guy just stared at me. Is there something on my face?” I said, touching my face. Maybe I had drooled while I was asleep.

“Ignore it you are pretty he could just be admiring you.”

“Priya, it didn't look like he was flirting with me. what’s wrong with his... Are you sure there is nothing on my face?, but an old lady was also staring she couldn't be flirting with me too.”

“Zara, ignore it. see this is why I didn't want to leave you alone, you are getting paranoid and seeing what is not there.”

We drove on in silence.

An older woman outside a shop said something to the person next to her, and they both looked at our car.

I caught the word "strange," and "it's her," but nothing else.

“Okay,” I said. “Why do people keep looking at me like that? and that is definitely not my paranoid self speaking don't you see they are all looking at me strangely."

“Small town,” Priya said. “New face. You know how it is. Everybody knows everyone here.”

“That woman literally said I smelled strange, but I had my bath before coming. If there is something wrong with me, you will tell me, right?. Also how can she even smell me from here.”

I was already worried at that point.

I smelled myself.

It was fine.

Priya’s hands shifted on the wheel.

Just slightly.

“You smell amazing, sweetheart. Old people here are weird about outsiders. It’s a whole thing. Don’t take it personally. They are only curious because you are new here.”

I looked at her.

She was watching the road with too much focus for a road this empty.

“Priya.”

“We’re almost at the house,” she said. “You’re going to love my mom’s cooking.”

I let it go.

I was tired, and my chest still had that bruised feeling from the whole Marcus situation.

I didn’t have the energy to push it.

I turned back to the window.

Another person on the pavement noticed me and then turned away too quickly.

The whole town had looked at me.

And I was very sure something was wrong.

I had not imagined it.

The first thing I saw after opening my eyes was Priya sitting by my bedside, her hands folded in her lap, watching me with an expression that was trying very hard to look calm."You are awake?" she said, coming closer to me. "I am sorry, you made me do it.""I made you..." I was suddenly hit by a wave of headache, my head felt like it was spinning. I pressed my palm flat against my forehead. "What did you do to me?""You were becoming erratic and wanted to leave so I needed to calm you down," she said, reaching over and placing her hands on my head."Don't touch me," I said, pulling her hands away and rolling to face the other side of the bed. "I want to be alone.""It's alright as long as you promise not to leave.""I won't, now can you please leave me alone," I said into the pillow, my voice coming out more tired than angry.I felt the bed shift as she stood up and a few seconds later the door opened and closed. The ceiling was the same ceiling it had been yesterday and the day befo

"I don't know Zara I am as confused as you," Priya said, and she looked it, her brows pulled together, eyes moving to the door her mom had just closed."Fine." I exhaled through my nose. I cannot believe the one person I have been hiding from just walked herself to my location."let's go find out what she wants," Priya said moving to the door.I followed her out and down the stairs, one hand trailing the banister, my jaw already tight before I even saw her.Bella was on the couch with her legs crossed and her arm stretched across the backrest like she had been living there for years. Typical. She looked up when we came down and that smile spread across her face, the one that never reached her eyes."My, my, my." She stood up slowly, looking me over from bottom to top. "I was sure my mind was not playing tricks on me during the ceremony.""what do you want Bella and why are you here asking for me." I kept my voice even and my feet at the bottom of the stairs."wow." She tilted her head

Five days.Five days since the mating ceremony and that conversation in the forest and I was still turning over those last four words like a coin I could not stop flipping. *I was waiting for you*. And then he just vanished into the dark like he had not just dropped something like that on me with zero explanation.I have not left this room since.I am not even going to pretend the reasons are simple. There are werewolves outside who could snap my neck without really trying, Bella is somewhere in this town which is already enough reason to stay indoors, and then there is Caius who has appeared out of nowhere twice now and whose dark blue eyes I keep seeing every time I look at the window at night with his *I was waiting for you*. So no. I am staying in this bed."Can I come in," Priya said from behind the door."Yessss," I said, pulling the duvet tighter around my neck. She pushed the door open with a book tucked under her arm and dropped it on the drawer without asking. That is how th

Dark blue eyes, looking straight at me and not even pretending otherwise."Are you stalking me?" I said, and it was only when I was already saying it that I noticed up close how structured his face was, everything sitting exactly where it should, especially those eyes."Are you done admiring my face?""No," I said, and my hands flew to my mouth immediately. I cannot believe those words just came out of me.He chuckled. Low and quiet.I dropped my hands and crossed my arms. "what I meant was no, that is not what I asked you and I was not admiring your face.""I wasn't stalking you," he said simply."Then explain how I have bumped into you twice in less than three hours." I held up two fingers. "And don't think I didn't notice the staring contest you tried to start at the ceremony, you were watching me the whole time.""I wasn't staring at you, your face just happened to be in my line of sight," he said, his expression completely straight."do you take me for a fool." I let out a short

A blonde girl came through the passage into the clearing wearing a sundress and a mask, and the crowd lost their minds. The cheering hit so loud I actually flinched. Girls around me were standing on their toes trying to get a better look, some of them had their hands pressed to their chests like they were watching something sacred."hmmph, bitch," Priya said under her breath, her lips barely moving, her eyes fixed on the stage with an expression that could strip paint off a wall.I turned to look at her. "you don't seem to like his choice of Luna, or are you jealous," I said nudging her shoulder with mine, genuinely entertained by the look on her face."Ewwww never, that guy is so disgusting and she is worse, they are a match made in heaven," she said, her nose wrinkling like the thought alone had a smell."I thought you were his fan girl, you were excited to see him when we got here, what happened your mood just nose dived," I said watching her face curiously, trying to figure out wh

He said it like I was nobody, and he wasn’t just watching me from the clearing like a creep earlier. The ceremony is that way, miss. Not even a full sentence worth of attention and then he was gone, back to that chair, back to looking like the room owed him something. I could still feel my skin getting goosebumps as he left his presence sent cold shivers to my body.I found Priya in the crowd and got back to her before she could come looking for me.“You okay?” she said.“Fine, just went to clear my head.”She did not push it. “I understand all this is quite new to you but trust me you will enjoy it,” She said holding my hands. We turned back to the raised area and I crossed my arms and tried to look like someone who was supposed to be here, and tried not to look at a certain dark blue-eyed individual.Darius stepped forward and the crowd got into an uproar. Everyone of them was excited to see himband some girls were sending him kisses from were they sat. “we love you Darius,”
