She talked while I got ready. Sat on the bed and talked, and I listened and asked questions, and she answered them, and by the time I was dressed I had the outline of it, the shape of what Wrenfield actually was. And that there were other creatures living in this world, that those vampires and witches they show in movies are real.

The town had been here longer than the official maps showed. Built by a pack that came over before the country was a country, dug in, grew, and stayed. The alpha wasn't elected; it was blood. The pack had a hierarchy that everyone understood and nobody questioned publicly, and questioning it privately was something you did very carefully. The ceremony tonight was not a suggestion; every unmated she-wolf of age was expected to be present because the first son choosing his mate was a pack event, not a personal one.

"What happens if he doesn't choose anyone tonight?" I asked.

"He will. There's pressure. There's always been pressure on Darius." She paused on the name like she had said it more carefully than she meant to.

"You know him?"

"Everyone knows him. He's the alpha's son, Zara, not a celebrity. Just someone I grew up around." She stood up. "We need to go."

The festival was on the edge of town where the trees opened into a wide flat clearing, and someone had strung lights between the branches so the whole place glowed warm and gold. There was music, low and rhythmic, and fire in a central pit and more people than I had seen anywhere in Wrenfield combined.

And the women.

I don't know what I expected, but I was not prepared. They were dressed like they had been preparing for this for months, and maybe they had. Beautiful in a way that felt slightly too much, too deliberate, the kind of beauty that has intent behind it. They stood in groups and moved with a confidence that was physical, not performed, like they were entirely comfortable in their own weight and their own skin.

I was wearing Priya's dress and standing next to Priya and trying not to make eye contact with anyone.

"Stop looking at the ground," Priya said quietly.

"I'm not looking at the ground."

"You're looking at the ground."

I looked up.

There was a raised area at the far end of the clearing, not a stage exactly, more like the ground was naturally higher there and someone had put chairs on it. Important people chairs, the kind of chairs that mean something. An older man sat in the center with the particular stillness of someone who never had to make themselves noticed. The alpha, it had to be.

Beside him a young man stood talking to someone, relaxed and smiling, built like someone who had never once been told no. The first son. Darius. He had that deliberate ease that good-looking people in power always seem to have.

I was scanning the rest of the raised area when I saw him.

He wasn't standing. He was sitting slightly apart from the others, chair pushed back just enough to create a distance that was clearly intentional, one arm resting on the side, not talking to anyone. Dark. Not dark in coloring, though that too, but dark in the way he occupied space. Like light worked slightly differently around him. He had those dark blue eyes. I saw him yesterday from the forest. It couldn't be him, right?

He was looking at me.

Not glancing. Not the quick curious look I had been getting all day from people in town. He was looking at me directly, and he didn't look away when I caught him, and that did something immediate and unwelcome to my breathing. I think it's him.

I turned to Priya. "Who is that?"

She followed my eyes, and something crossed her face. "That's Caius."

"And."

"And he is the second son don't look him in the eye he is dangerous." She lowered her voice even though we were surrounded by noise. "He's different from his brother. Different from everyone here actually." She looked at me with something I could not fully read. "He's a hybrid Zara. Half werewolf, half vampire. And vampires are our enemies, so nobody really likes him here, and he has this dark energy around him, so everyone avoids him."

I looked back at him. He was still watching me. Not the way the town had watched me, not that confused alert smell-based awareness. It was like he knew who I am.

"Why is he still looking at me?" I said.

Priya didn't answer right away.

"Priya."

"I don't know, just ignore him," she said, but she said it in the same voice she had used in the car when she told me to ignore the staring and not to worry and everything was fine.

The voice she used when she knew exactly what was happening.

"look isn't Darius so handsome, I kinda wish he would pick me," Priya said like a fan girl I had completed zoned out of what she was saying cause I was already having an headache, I needed to get out of here and breathe.

"I need to clear my head for a while, I will be back," I said to Priya, not even bothering to check if she heard me or not. My head was already spiraling with everything I had found out now. Walking through the crowd, not caring where I was going, I just needed to get out of there, when I suddenly hit a wall, but this wall had clothes on. I looked up and realized it wasn't a wall but dark blue eyes.

How did he get here?

I looked up and realized it wasn't a wall but dark blue eyes. How did he get here?

He looked down at me for a second, the same way he had from across the clearing, like he was reading something written in a language only he could see. Then he straightened and glanced past my shoulder.

"The ceremony is that way, miss."

The first thing I saw after opening my eyes was Priya sitting by my bedside, her hands folded in her lap, watching me with an expression that was trying very hard to look calm."You are awake?" she said, coming closer to me. "I am sorry, you made me do it.""I made you..." I was suddenly hit by a wave of headache, my head felt like it was spinning. I pressed my palm flat against my forehead. "What did you do to me?""You were becoming erratic and wanted to leave so I needed to calm you down," she said, reaching over and placing her hands on my head."Don't touch me," I said, pulling her hands away and rolling to face the other side of the bed. "I want to be alone.""It's alright as long as you promise not to leave.""I won't, now can you please leave me alone," I said into the pillow, my voice coming out more tired than angry.I felt the bed shift as she stood up and a few seconds later the door opened and closed. The ceiling was the same ceiling it had been yesterday and the day befo

"I don't know Zara I am as confused as you," Priya said, and she looked it, her brows pulled together, eyes moving to the door her mom had just closed."Fine." I exhaled through my nose. I cannot believe the one person I have been hiding from just walked herself to my location."let's go find out what she wants," Priya said moving to the door.I followed her out and down the stairs, one hand trailing the banister, my jaw already tight before I even saw her.Bella was on the couch with her legs crossed and her arm stretched across the backrest like she had been living there for years. Typical. She looked up when we came down and that smile spread across her face, the one that never reached her eyes."My, my, my." She stood up slowly, looking me over from bottom to top. "I was sure my mind was not playing tricks on me during the ceremony.""what do you want Bella and why are you here asking for me." I kept my voice even and my feet at the bottom of the stairs."wow." She tilted her head

Five days.Five days since the mating ceremony and that conversation in the forest and I was still turning over those last four words like a coin I could not stop flipping. *I was waiting for you*. And then he just vanished into the dark like he had not just dropped something like that on me with zero explanation.I have not left this room since.I am not even going to pretend the reasons are simple. There are werewolves outside who could snap my neck without really trying, Bella is somewhere in this town which is already enough reason to stay indoors, and then there is Caius who has appeared out of nowhere twice now and whose dark blue eyes I keep seeing every time I look at the window at night with his *I was waiting for you*. So no. I am staying in this bed."Can I come in," Priya said from behind the door."Yessss," I said, pulling the duvet tighter around my neck. She pushed the door open with a book tucked under her arm and dropped it on the drawer without asking. That is how th

Dark blue eyes, looking straight at me and not even pretending otherwise."Are you stalking me?" I said, and it was only when I was already saying it that I noticed up close how structured his face was, everything sitting exactly where it should, especially those eyes."Are you done admiring my face?""No," I said, and my hands flew to my mouth immediately. I cannot believe those words just came out of me.He chuckled. Low and quiet.I dropped my hands and crossed my arms. "what I meant was no, that is not what I asked you and I was not admiring your face.""I wasn't stalking you," he said simply."Then explain how I have bumped into you twice in less than three hours." I held up two fingers. "And don't think I didn't notice the staring contest you tried to start at the ceremony, you were watching me the whole time.""I wasn't staring at you, your face just happened to be in my line of sight," he said, his expression completely straight."do you take me for a fool." I let out a short

A blonde girl came through the passage into the clearing wearing a sundress and a mask, and the crowd lost their minds. The cheering hit so loud I actually flinched. Girls around me were standing on their toes trying to get a better look, some of them had their hands pressed to their chests like they were watching something sacred."hmmph, bitch," Priya said under her breath, her lips barely moving, her eyes fixed on the stage with an expression that could strip paint off a wall.I turned to look at her. "you don't seem to like his choice of Luna, or are you jealous," I said nudging her shoulder with mine, genuinely entertained by the look on her face."Ewwww never, that guy is so disgusting and she is worse, they are a match made in heaven," she said, her nose wrinkling like the thought alone had a smell."I thought you were his fan girl, you were excited to see him when we got here, what happened your mood just nose dived," I said watching her face curiously, trying to figure out wh

He said it like I was nobody, and he wasn’t just watching me from the clearing like a creep earlier. The ceremony is that way, miss. Not even a full sentence worth of attention and then he was gone, back to that chair, back to looking like the room owed him something. I could still feel my skin getting goosebumps as he left his presence sent cold shivers to my body.I found Priya in the crowd and got back to her before she could come looking for me.“You okay?” she said.“Fine, just went to clear my head.”She did not push it. “I understand all this is quite new to you but trust me you will enjoy it,” She said holding my hands. We turned back to the raised area and I crossed my arms and tried to look like someone who was supposed to be here, and tried not to look at a certain dark blue-eyed individual.Darius stepped forward and the crowd got into an uproar. Everyone of them was excited to see himband some girls were sending him kisses from were they sat. “we love you Darius,”
