Chapter 4

I was already arranging my things in my suitcase when the door opened.

Priya didn't knock. She just came in and closed the door behind her and stood there for a second like she was deciding something. Then she crossed the room and sat on the edge of the bed and turned on the small lamp on the nightstand and looked at me.

"What are you doing? Why are you arranging your things back in your suitcase?" she asked, looking at me like she knew what was going on in my head.

"My manager called last night, and there are some issues that require my attention, and I can't do it from here," I told her, not wanting to tell her I overheard her and her mom.

She already knew I had heard. I could see it on her face.

"How much?" she said, not beating around the bush.

"Enough."

She nodded slowly. She looked tired in a way that had nothing to do with the hour.

"Okay," she said. "Okay, I'm going to tell you everything, and I need you to just let me get through it before you say anything."

I didn't respond. I sat on the bed and waited.

"You know how I've always been the one who hears things before everyone else. In school, remember when I heard the fire alarm two seconds before it went off and you thought I was messing with you." She stopped. "That wasn't nothing, Zara. I hear everything. I smell everything. I see in the dark without trying. I have since I was a child, and I've been careful my whole time in the city to make sure you never really noticed."

The room felt very small suddenly.

"Priya."

"Let me finish." She pressed her hands together in her lap. "My family, this town, these people. We're not like you. The world is not as you know it to be; there are many supernatural beings living among humans. I am a werewolf, Zara, and I know how that sounds, and I know you're about to panic, but I need you to stay with me."

I stared at her like she had grown two heads already.

I had known Priya for seven years. I had shared food with her, cried in front of her, and called her from a hallway floor two days ago. Seven years of knowing someone's face, and I was looking at her right now like she was a stranger. I expected something but not this.

"Say something," she said.

"Are you kidding me, werewolves?" I said, laughing, but she wasn't.

"You're serious."

"Yes."

"You're actually...."

"Yes."

I got up. I didn't know where I was planning to go; the room wasn't big enough to go anywhere; I just needed to be on my feet. I stood in the middle of the floor and pressed my hand to my mouth and thought about the woman on the pavement who said I smelled strange. The man on the bicycle. Priya's mother's face. Not a human.

"They were all looking at me because they could smell that I wasn't one of them," I said.

"Yes."

"And the whole town is...."

"Most of it."

I sat back down on the bed because my legs made the decision before I did. "I need to leave Priya. I need to go home."

"I know that's what you're feeling right now. But Zara, you are safe. Nobody here is going to hurt you; I would never have brought you somewhere you weren't safe."

"You brought a human," I said, and my voice came out strange, "into a werewolf town without telling me."

She flinched. "I know."

"Why?"

"Because you needed to get out of the city and you needed me, and this is where I am." She reached over and took my hand. Her grip was firm. "And because I have been your best friend for seven years and I was not going to let you sit in that apartment alone."

I looked at her hand on mine. Same hands I had seen a thousand times.

"And you brought me here why? You could have taken me somewhere else or just let me be," I said, pacing around the room.

"I know."

"This is actually insane."

"I know Zara."

We sat there. The lamp made a small yellow circle around us, and outside the window, Wrenfield was completely dark and completely quiet.

"What happens now?" I said finally.

"Tonight there's a ceremony. A festival. The alpha's first son is choosing his mate, and the whole town will be there." She hesitated. "I think it would be better if you came than if you stayed here alone. People already know you're here. If they see you at the festival, with me, under my family's protection, it tells them something."

"What does it tell them?"

"That you're not a threat. That you belong to someone here." She stood up and went to her bag and pulled out a folded piece of clothing. A dress, dark green, simple. "Wear this. My scent is on it; it'll cover yours enough that people won't react the way they did in town today."

I took the dress from her. Held it.

A mate-choosing ceremony. In a werewolf town. Wearing my best friend's clothes so I smelled like her instead of like myself.

Two days ago I was sitting on a kitchen floor crying over Marcus, but now I am here. I still feel like all of this is one big bad dream.

"Priya," I said.

"Yeah."

"You owe me an enormous explanation."

"I know," she said. "I'll give you all of it. But put the dress on first."

The first thing I saw after opening my eyes was Priya sitting by my bedside, her hands folded in her lap, watching me with an expression that was trying very hard to look calm."You are awake?" she said, coming closer to me. "I am sorry, you made me do it.""I made you..." I was suddenly hit by a wave of headache, my head felt like it was spinning. I pressed my palm flat against my forehead. "What did you do to me?""You were becoming erratic and wanted to leave so I needed to calm you down," she said, reaching over and placing her hands on my head."Don't touch me," I said, pulling her hands away and rolling to face the other side of the bed. "I want to be alone.""It's alright as long as you promise not to leave.""I won't, now can you please leave me alone," I said into the pillow, my voice coming out more tired than angry.I felt the bed shift as she stood up and a few seconds later the door opened and closed. The ceiling was the same ceiling it had been yesterday and the day befo

"I don't know Zara I am as confused as you," Priya said, and she looked it, her brows pulled together, eyes moving to the door her mom had just closed."Fine." I exhaled through my nose. I cannot believe the one person I have been hiding from just walked herself to my location."let's go find out what she wants," Priya said moving to the door.I followed her out and down the stairs, one hand trailing the banister, my jaw already tight before I even saw her.Bella was on the couch with her legs crossed and her arm stretched across the backrest like she had been living there for years. Typical. She looked up when we came down and that smile spread across her face, the one that never reached her eyes."My, my, my." She stood up slowly, looking me over from bottom to top. "I was sure my mind was not playing tricks on me during the ceremony.""what do you want Bella and why are you here asking for me." I kept my voice even and my feet at the bottom of the stairs."wow." She tilted her head

Five days.Five days since the mating ceremony and that conversation in the forest and I was still turning over those last four words like a coin I could not stop flipping. *I was waiting for you*. And then he just vanished into the dark like he had not just dropped something like that on me with zero explanation.I have not left this room since.I am not even going to pretend the reasons are simple. There are werewolves outside who could snap my neck without really trying, Bella is somewhere in this town which is already enough reason to stay indoors, and then there is Caius who has appeared out of nowhere twice now and whose dark blue eyes I keep seeing every time I look at the window at night with his *I was waiting for you*. So no. I am staying in this bed."Can I come in," Priya said from behind the door."Yessss," I said, pulling the duvet tighter around my neck. She pushed the door open with a book tucked under her arm and dropped it on the drawer without asking. That is how th

Dark blue eyes, looking straight at me and not even pretending otherwise."Are you stalking me?" I said, and it was only when I was already saying it that I noticed up close how structured his face was, everything sitting exactly where it should, especially those eyes."Are you done admiring my face?""No," I said, and my hands flew to my mouth immediately. I cannot believe those words just came out of me.He chuckled. Low and quiet.I dropped my hands and crossed my arms. "what I meant was no, that is not what I asked you and I was not admiring your face.""I wasn't stalking you," he said simply."Then explain how I have bumped into you twice in less than three hours." I held up two fingers. "And don't think I didn't notice the staring contest you tried to start at the ceremony, you were watching me the whole time.""I wasn't staring at you, your face just happened to be in my line of sight," he said, his expression completely straight."do you take me for a fool." I let out a short

A blonde girl came through the passage into the clearing wearing a sundress and a mask, and the crowd lost their minds. The cheering hit so loud I actually flinched. Girls around me were standing on their toes trying to get a better look, some of them had their hands pressed to their chests like they were watching something sacred."hmmph, bitch," Priya said under her breath, her lips barely moving, her eyes fixed on the stage with an expression that could strip paint off a wall.I turned to look at her. "you don't seem to like his choice of Luna, or are you jealous," I said nudging her shoulder with mine, genuinely entertained by the look on her face."Ewwww never, that guy is so disgusting and she is worse, they are a match made in heaven," she said, her nose wrinkling like the thought alone had a smell."I thought you were his fan girl, you were excited to see him when we got here, what happened your mood just nose dived," I said watching her face curiously, trying to figure out wh

He said it like I was nobody, and he wasn’t just watching me from the clearing like a creep earlier. The ceremony is that way, miss. Not even a full sentence worth of attention and then he was gone, back to that chair, back to looking like the room owed him something. I could still feel my skin getting goosebumps as he left his presence sent cold shivers to my body.I found Priya in the crowd and got back to her before she could come looking for me.“You okay?” she said.“Fine, just went to clear my head.”She did not push it. “I understand all this is quite new to you but trust me you will enjoy it,” She said holding my hands. We turned back to the raised area and I crossed my arms and tried to look like someone who was supposed to be here, and tried not to look at a certain dark blue-eyed individual.Darius stepped forward and the crowd got into an uproar. Everyone of them was excited to see himband some girls were sending him kisses from were they sat. “we love you Darius,”
