Chapter 1

I froze, instantly checking my phone.

Nine in the morning on the dot. Lunch wasn't for another three hours.

Seeing me stare at my screen without saying a word, Brandon tapped his knuckles hard against the top of the takeout container to hurry me along.

"Did you hear me, Jay? I want a Venti vanilla latte from Starbucks. Don't be cheap like yesterday and order a Grande. It barely covered anything." He tossed off the demand as if I owed him money.

A sharp, angry laugh escaped my chest. "I didn't ask you to get me lunch today."

Brandon blinked, his face suddenly flushing red with rage. "What’s your problem? You think you can just flex on the intern?

"I already bought the food! Now you're saying you don't want it? Do you have any idea how early I had to get up just to get this for you?

"I don't care, you owe me that coffee. I earned it!" He stomped his foot, his voice ringing through the office and immediately drawing the attention of everyone nearby.

A small crowd began to drift over.

"What's going on?"

"Why are they yelling?"

"Jay, what happened?" Marcus Sinclair, a senior guy on my team, looked at me in confusion.

Before I could even open my mouth, Brandon's eyes welled up with dramatic tears.

"Marcus, you have to help me out here." Brandon sniffled, turning to the crowd with a pitiful expression. "Jay asked me to buy him lunch, so I did, and now he's refusing to pay me back."

To me, his expression was pure taunting provocation, but to everyone else, he looked like a helpless victim. Whispers broke out among my coworkers.

Looking around at their faces, I saw no real malice, but the default assumption was clear: the senior employee was picking on the kid in his first week.

Marcus clapped a hand on Brandon's shoulder. "Hey, take it easy. Jay isn't like that; it’s just a misunderstanding. Tell you what, I'll cover the cash for him. Don't stress; we don't need management walking in on this."

Marcus pulled out his phone to send the cash, but I jumped in and grabbed his wrist.

"Don't," I said through gritted teeth, "I've got it."

If I let Marcus pay for this, I'd solidify the story that I mistreated the intern, and I'd never be able to clear my name.

I opened Venmo on my phone.

Brandon's lips twisted into a victorious, smug smirk. "It's nineteen dollars total; don't mess up the amount."

My fingers hovered over the screen. The Chipotle bowl was twelve bucks, meaning his coffee demand was more than half the cost of the actual meal. With everyone watching, I couldn't push back. I hit the transfer. A suffocating heat burned in my chest.

The second the notification hit Brandon's phone, his teary face completely cleared up. He gave Marcus a cheerful thanks and strolled back to his desk. Marcus patted my shoulder in quiet sympathy, and the crowd dispersed.

The office went quiet again.

I dropped my bag and sat down, but the Chipotle bowl Brandon brought was taking up my entire keyboard space. Salsa liquid was already leaking around the plastic lid and dripping right onto the keys.

I stared at the nineteen-dollar Chipotle bowl for a long, heavy moment.

Then I picked it up, dumped it straight into the trash can, and booted up my computer.

As soon as Slack loaded on my monitor, Brandon's profile picture flashed with a new notification.

He’d sent a message, adding a goofy laughing emoji.

[Hey Jay, that cash was just for my emotional distress. Don't forget to order my latte later this afternoon!]

My mind went blank. I typed back: [Are you insane? I just paid you.]

Marcus replied with a laughing emoji.A moment later, Ryan dropped a message into the group chat: [Jay, I can help book the table for dinner tomorrow!]Leo chimed in right after: [I'll draft the budget sheet.]The other intern added: [I'll handle collecting everyone's dietary restrictions.]Looking at the flood of messages, I couldn't help but smile. They had finally learned. Before accepting someone else's generosity, you first think about what you could bring to the table. The next evening, the team went out to celebrate.I took everyone out for a barbecue. Nothing ridiculously expensive, no seafood buffets, but everyone had an absolute blast.Midway through the meal, Ryan held up his drink."Jay, thank you," he said. "Thank you for not writing us off completely after what happened."I looked across the table at him. "I didn't write you off because I saw you were actually willing to own up and fix it."Everyone chuckled, but the mood turned more contemplative.Leo spoke u

The post was instantly screenshotted and shared everywhere. The comment section completely shifted from attacking the company to tearing Brandon apart:[Demanding nineteen dollars for a twelve-dollar meal and claiming to be the victim?][This isn't an intern, this is an entitled nightmare.][Jay has an incredible temper. If it were me, I would've called the cops on the spot.][Does this guy think corporate life is his personal ATM?][Anyone know if Jay is still hiring interns? I'd love to work under a manager like that.]Brandon deleted the post shortly after, but it was already too late. The internet was never going to forget. That afternoon, he called me over a dozen times. I didn't pick up a single one. Finally, he sent a text message: [Jay, I was wrong. I was just so angry.][Can you please ask the company to take down the statement? I still need to find a job in the future.]Looking at the screen, I suddenly found it absurdly funny. When he was trying to ruin my reputa

"I really do know." Chris sniffled.I looked at him quietly. "You're still young, Chris. This isn't the end of the road for you. But you need to remember that when someone helps you out, that’s grace, not an obligation. You don't have to pay them back, but you sure as hell can't turn around and demand that they keep sacrificing themselves for you."Chris sobbed, completely lost for words.I pulled out a tissue and handed it to him. "When you apply for jobs down the line, go ahead and list the projects you worked on here. I'll give an honest evaluation of the modules you actually owned. As for a formal letter of recommendation, though, I can't give you one."He froze for a second, then nodded through his tears. "I understand."He offered a faint, sad smile. "Goodbye, Jay."I walked him to the elevators. Just as the silver doors began to slide shut, he suddenly snapped his head up."Jay!" he called out, "Do you think... I can become someone like you?"I stared at his swollen, red

Mr. Beckett, Miss Ashford, myself, and the four remaining interns.Brandon's chair sat empty.Nobody brought up his name, but every single person in the room knew why he wasn't there.Miss Ashford kicked off the meeting with a brief run-through of the process, then Mr. Beckett turned to me."Jay, the floor is yours."I opened the presentation on the main screen. The first slide displayed the master evaluation table for all four interns. Every metric was broken down with absolute clarity: task completion rate, learning curve, collaboration, accountability, and professional ethics. When Ryan saw his name at the top of the chart, his shoulders went visibly rigid.I read his evaluation out loud, "Ryan. Strong foundational skills and great data sensitivity. Early on, taking two whole months off for his thesis defense created a lapse in project continuity."His face went pale.I continued, "However, after returning, he caught up on his timeline aggressively. It was a long wall of text.[Jay, I’m so sorry. I shouldn't have told you to apologize yesterday.][I knew deep down how good you've been to us, but I was so terrified of blowing my return offer that I went along with everyone else and stayed quiet.][You've stepped up for me so many times, yet I didn't stand up for you when it mattered. I regret it so much.][Whatever happens with my evaluation, I'll accept the result.]I read through it, but I didn't type back.It wasn't because I was still holding a grudge. It was because with certain apologies, the real response wasn't words but time.At eleven in the morning, I dropped a message in our team group chat: [In this company, skills matter, but character matters more.][If you lack skills, you can learn. If you lack experience, you can build it.][But as a professional, you can't afford to lose your basic sense of judgment. Blindly believing everything you hear and rushing to pick sides the moment emotions run high is a dangero

I took a step back, staring at Brandon coldly."What's wrong? Weren't you the one who wanted everyone to weigh in? Now that everybody's here, why'd you stop talking?"Tears streamed down Brandon’s face again, but this time, nobody handed him a tissue.I scrolled down the screen. "This afternoon, you demanded that I buy drinks for all the interns. So, I did. But I never said I was buying one for you. Because you already squeezed nineteen dollars out of me this morning."I locked eyes with him, my voice quiet, yet carrying easily through the absolute silence of the break room. "Brandon, my kindness isn't a leverage tool for your extortion. And my silence wasn't permission for you to slander me."Brandon went white as a sheet. He whipped his head around toward the other interns. "Say something! Weren't you guys just agreeing that he was bullying me?"No one spoke.Ryan kept his head down, his knuckles white as he clenched his fists. Chris' eyes went red, his mouth twitching, but no
