Chapter 3

Author: Triple Threat
“What was the average monthly salary for a sales representative during my first year here?”

“It was $4,500. After taxes and benefit deductions, they took home around $3,800.”

When I first joined the company that year, Bill offered me $6,000.

“In my third year, Mr. Koenig officially created the marketing department and made me a team leader. How much did an ordinary sales representative earn that year?”

A trace of discomfort crossed Irene’s face.

“Business was booming that year, so Mr. Koenig gave everyone a special raise. They made $6,000 a month, plus a full benefits package.”

I nodded.

That was the year I had secured the company’s first seven-figure account.

The company’s revenue doubled, so Bill gave everyone a raise.

Everyone received it except me.

“One last question. There are eighteen people in the marketing department. How many of them make less than I do?”

Irene’s face went pale. She lowered her head and stared at her keyboard in silence.

My heart sank.

“Let me ask that differently. Aside from me, what is the lowest salary in the marketing department?”

Irene remained silent for several seconds.

Then, she clicked her mouse and highlighted a figure: $8,500.

A note appeared beneath it.

[Scheduled raise next month: $10,000.]

I had worked at the company for six years and landed its first seven-figure account.

Every client in my portfolio generated at least seven figures in profit.

Yet, I was the lowest-paid person in the entire department.

Six years.

I had asked for a raise seven times, but Bill had never once mentioned that the company was thriving.

All he ever said was, “Kristen, you’ve been with me from the beginning. No one in this company matters more to me than you do. Just give the company a little more time. I promise your loyalty will be rewarded.”

I gave them six years.

In return, seventeen of the eighteen people in the marketing department earned more than I did.

I gave the screen one final glance before I walked away.

Behind me, Irene hurriedly called Bill.

“Mr. Koenig, we have a problem. Kristen’s discovered everything about the salaries…”

That night, I could not sleep.

The next morning, I did not go into the office. Instead, I sent a message to the WhatsApp group I shared with my clients.

[If I left this company and joined another firm, would you be willing to move your accounts with me?]

Someone responded almost instantly.

[Of course we would! We’ve worked together for years. We trust you far more than we trust your company.]

[This might sound harsh, but every salesperson at your company except you is completely useless.]

[Couldn’t agree more.]

[Seconded.]

Within ten minutes, every client had agreed to take their business with me if I left.

Only then did I finally breathe a sigh of relief.

I thanked them in the group chat and sent my prepared resume to a headhunter.

Just then, Irene called me.

“Kristen, Mr. Koenig knows what happened last night. He’s been looking for you. You need to get to the office right now.”

I hung up without a word.

Ten seconds later, she called again.

“Kristen, whatever this is, we can talk it through. Don’t do anything reckless. Mr. Koenig’s going to be furious.”

I still said nothing and turned off my phone.

At 2p.m., I walked into the office.

The entire marketing floor was silent.

The usual office gossipers suddenly found their desks fascinating the second they saw me.

Jason was the worst. Normally, he never missed a chance to follow me around and suck up to me.

This time, he looked ready to crawl under his desk and hide.

Bill stood in the doorway to his office.

“Kristen, come in for a minute.”

I walked in and took a seat.

He lit a cigar, and his expression was hidden behind a thick cloud of smoke.

“Kristen, how have I treated you all these years?”

“I honestly don’t know.”

I meant it.

Previously, I had always believed that although he underpaid me, he genuinely cared about me.

I believed he valued me, encouraged me, and had given me the opportunity that launched my career.

Then, Jason unintentionally revealed the truth about everyone’s salaries the night before.

Only then did I realize that I had devoted six years of loyalty and hard work to someone who never deserved either.

My mother’s condition had stabilized as well.I transferred her to a better hospital and also bought a small condo near my office. The day I received the keys, I stood in the empty living room.Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows and cast a golden glow across the floor.Sitting in her wheelchair, my mother ran her fingers over the wall with tears in her eyes.“Is this really our home?”I crouched beside her. “Yes. We’ll never have to move again.”She stroked my hair as she had when I was a child.“Kristen, this must’ve been so hard on you.”I took her hand and smiled as I shook my head. “Not anymore.”I meant it. Life no longer felt like a constant struggle because I had finally found a path where my hard work actually led somewhere. Some time later, I attended an industry conference.I saw Bill again. He was wearing an old suit, and his hair had gone noticeably gray. Standing alone in the corner of the venue, he barely resembled the man I remembered.W

I smiled.“Compensation should never be a mystery. No one should have to guess what they’re worth to a company.”They did not know that I had once spent six years wondering exactly where I stood.I had wondered whether Bill was truly struggling, whether the company was about to turn a corner, and whether I simply was not good enough yet.Eventually, I learned that people who really respected you would never keep you guessing. At Ellington Group’s year-end awards ceremony, I was named Executive of the Year. The award came with a $500,000 bonus. The spotlight made my eyes teary as I stood onstage.Charlie was sitting in the front row, and he gave me a quiet nod.Holding the microphone, I looked at my team below the stage and felt more at peace than ever before.“I used to believe that success in the workplace meant learning to put up with everything, including disrespect and unfairness. Anything that kept the peace. Then, I learned that controlling your temper is one thing. Sur

“Thank you.”He looked at me.“Kristen, stop thanking me. We’re only doing what any decent employer should.”I nodded, but my eyes still stung with tears.I had been mistreated for so long that even basic support I should expect felt like extraordinary kindness.Bill later appeared at the labor board hearing. He had lost a noticeable amount of weight, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. When he saw me, he still tried to act as though he were my boss.“Kristen, it’s not too late to reconsider.”I smiled.“I regret it.”His eyes lit up.“I regret not leaving sooner.”Bill’s expression darkened instantly. The hearing itself was straightforward. His demand for $1,000,000 in damages had no legal basis whatsoever. The supposed policy in the employee handbook had never been properly disclosed. I had never signed any acknowledgment agreeing to it.He accused me of accessing confidential payroll records, but he could not produce any evidence.I, on the other hand, submitted th

I lowered my head and murmured a quiet acknowledgment.A tear fell onto the blanket. For years, I had pushed myself relentlessly. Not because I loved the company, but because I had nowhere else to turn. However, I no longer had to depend on someone else’s decency for my future.I could rely on myself.Meanwhile, Bill’s company had descended into complete chaos. After the clients terminated their contracts, several active projects ground to a halt.No one on the support team understood the details well enough to keep them moving.Anthony took over the largest account I had left behind. On his first day, he sent the client an internal cost sheet instead of the approved quote. The client immediately forwarded the email to its legal department and demanded to terminate the contract.Jennie was assigned to one of the company’s longest-standing clients. She could not even remember the CEO’s last name and addressed him by the wrong name during a meeting. His expression turned ic

“And I also recorded the threat you just made.”His face went from flushed to pale, then almost gray.“You set me up?”“I was making sure that I could protect myself.”A sudden knock came at the door.It was the human resources manager.“Mr. Koenig, Legal is on the line. One of our clients is demanding compensation for breach of contract.”Bill shot me a vicious glare before he opened the door. The moment it opened, the group gathered outside immediately looked away. They had been eavesdropping.I picked up my bag and walked through the crowd. No one dared to mock me, but Jason suddenly called after me, “Kristen.”I stopped. His face had gone pale.“I was drunk at dinner that night. I didn’t mean what I said.”I looked at him.He was seven years younger than I was.He had been with the company for only two weeks, yet he earned $16,000 a month. One drunken remark from him had exposed the lie I had been living for six years.I should have hated him, but at this moment,

A detailed transition checklist was attached separately. The company was not entitled to withhold any outstanding wages for any reason.Less than five minutes after I sent the email, Bill called me.I did not answer, so he started messaging me.[Kristen, do you really have to take this so far?][Don’t burn your bridges. You never know when our paths might cross again.][Withdraw your resignation and apologize, and I’ll pretend none of this happened.]I glanced at the messages. Then, I took screenshots of them.Ten minutes later, his tone changed.[Kristen, I admit that we didn’t handle your pay fairly.][I’ll raise it to $20,000 a month.][Withdraw your resignation, and we can sit down and work this out.]I still did not respond.By noon, the clients’ termination notices began arriving in the company’s inbox. The first arrived. Then, the second and the third.By 4 p.m., all twelve key clients had formally terminated their contracts. Each notice clearly stated the reaso
