Rage surged higher in my lungs as I kept thinking back to what I'd had to leave behind. That perfect, round body. The perfect tits. That cute face. I couldn't remember the last time I'd had a vanilla, innocent beauty in my palms. And just when I had one so sweet and wet like that, a new development hit like a headache. I was still mad about sending her away, but sometimes this path I'd chosen for myself called for sacrifices. Besides…a big-shot hybrid like myself couldn't let a tiny human like her ruin my plans. “Don Draven, I beg you!” The whiny voice of the man beneath my fingers snapped me back to reality. I shoved his head back into the drum of water, with all strength and anger. “Why did you do it?” I let his head up to hear him speak. “I-I don't know what you're talking about!” he cried between gasps. “Please let me go!” I shoved his head back into the drum and held down hard. “I only have so much patience left, Duke. Don't test it.” He wriggled and thrashed inside the water, and I let him up for air when I felt his pulse start to slip. Grim reaper duties were far from my to-do list at the moment. “I swear to you! I've been by my daughter's side in the hospital and—” I snapped my fingers, cutting him off. The door opened a second later and a large man with silver eyes and a buzz cut shoved another man bleeding from his nostrils and mouth, into the basement. “Remember this,” I flung Duke Montclair against the wood barrels lined against the walls, “I gave you enough chances.” “Thank you, Don! Your graces are never forgotten!” His eyes widened as he recognized the man covered in his own blood, the repulsive stench of his fear upsetting my stomach. I scoffed and signaled the bloodied man forward with a crook of my fingers. He scurried forward, his eyes cast wide at his feet, trembling all over. “Tell us why you took those misleading pictures of my betrothed and I. And you know better than to skitter around.” The man spilled the tale in a flurry of stutters and sobs. “I was scared at first when Mr. Montclair told me to tail you and capture anything implicating that could give him an upper hand. But he offered to pay three years worth of my salary if I did as he said.” I tilted my head, narrowing my eyes on Duke Montclair who trembled with fear. “So you've got that kind of money, huh? You just wanna screw me over, then?” “Not at all! I only promised him that to get him to—” “Good. So you asked him to do it.” He paled all over again. “Don Draven, I really didn't mean to do it, please. I was just curious if my daughter was behaving —” “Your daughter is mine, Duke. Mine. You should know to never cross the line with me.” I walked over to the large steel table in the middle of the room and picked up a sharp paper cutter. Duke shrank in fear as I turned and stared right at him. “Vale, hold him down.” My right-hand man stepped forward and yanked the back of Duke’s hair, forcing him to his feet. Duke screamed like a child as he was dragged to the table and forced into position, his left pinky finger flattened against the surface. “You owe me a shit-ton of money, yet you throw me under the bus.” “Why would I do that when I offered you my daughter?” Snot ran down his face as he looked to me pleadingly. “You tell me, Duke.” I leaned forward and positioned the paper cutter above his pinky finger. “What were you trying to achieve?” He didn't get a chance to respond. A guttural cry of pain echoed off the walls, as I sliced his finger clean off. He fell back, gripping his wrist as blood spurted from his hand. “I'm sorry! Please, forgive me!” I stared at him for a long moment, wiping my hands against a small towel. “What happens if your daughter never wakes up? I'll be needing my money one way or the other, Duke.” “I'll make sure she wakes up, please! I'll pray to the heavens and the earth, whatever it takes!” I chuckled and shoved my fingers through my hair. “Do what you will.” I picked up the finger and tossed it to him. “Get out.” They scurried off in a hurry, Duke and his snitching reporter. Vale stepped forward, his expression hard. “Aren't you being too easy on him?” “That's for me to decide.” I flicked him a glance. “And the other agenda?” “It's already underway. Some of the boys are at work at the field.” I nodded, smiling to myself as I shoved my hands in my pockets and walked to the window. My mind trailed back to the girl from earlier. Quinn Parker. I knew her name because it was a piece of cake to know things like that, as a hybrid. Manipulating human memories was one of the many powers a demon like me had access to. She was one of the few people whose irresistible bloodlust had called to me like a magnet. And tonight, she dies. Into the black hole. As the rule demands. Too bad I wouldn't get a chance to taste that sweet arousal I smelt on her. I turned and started towards the door. “Get the car ready. We're heading to the field.” ~~~ The boys lined up at attention as the grey Mazda pulled into the field. “Welcome, boss!” They yelled in unison as I stepped out of the vehicle. I rolled my eyes at the annoying chant that I couldn't get them to stop no matter how much I tried. I detested such flamboyancy. I rolled the sleeves of my black shirt up as the ginger–haired, forest-green-eyed beauty marched up to me, readying for battle. Fucking hell, see how those tits bounce? How are they just the right size? I knew they could fit right in my— “What is this?” Her voice washed over me like ice packs, cold and soothing. “What's going on here?” “Good to see you again, Quinn Parker.” She narrowed her eyes in suspicion. “I'm not about to ask you how you know my name. More importantly, I'd like to know why these men are battering my home. If you can explain? You seem to know them.” I made a show of looking around at the men, then I all too eagerly fixed my gaze on her face again. “Pack your things and leave. We're taking this land.” “What's that supposed to mean? This is my home, you can't just up and—” “Of course I can. I own half the city, love. I can take whatever I want, whenever.” I raked hungry eyes down her body. “Your body would have been mine too but for—” A heavy wind knocked the rest of the words out of my mouth, leaving a painful sting. She slapped me. The brazen witch. I scoffed, rubbing my palm against my jaw. “Guess I deserved that.” “You deceived me, Luciano Draven.” I smirked, leaning close and curling a strand of that ginger-hair around my finger. “No. You wanted me.” In the blink of an eye, she slipped a surgical blade from her hair and held it up to my carotid. It all happened too fast, and I just…let it. This little human amused me. “Do you think you can kill me?” “Quinn, for goodness sake! Stop it!” I flicked the dark-haired woman who looked just a tad bit like her, a bored glance. She knew better than her daughter, at least. “I regret ever letting you put your hands on me.” “But you can't deny enjoying it.” “I won't let you get away with this,” ginger-haired beauty spat, green eyes flaming like coals. “I will go to the ends of this earth if it means—” A loud shot rang out in the air, cutting off her words and sending her staggering back from me. Everything seemed to stop and happen in slow motion for a bit. She touched her chest that now leaked with her blood, her eyes growing wide with horror and realization. Then she fell back. Her mother's shriek rang across the entire city. I watched as ginger-haired beauty lay in her own pool of blood, gurgling and staring blankly into the sky. Fuck. It all ended too soon. I lifted a blazing gaze to Vale who stood feet-apart with a gun, his hard glare fixed on the bleeding girl. “You always have to end things when they just get bloody interesting, don't you?”LUCIANO“What’s taking so long to find these bastards?!”“I’m sorry, boss. We're still trying to track them down.”I cursed under my breath and drove my fingers through my hair. “It's been two hours, Vale. Do you realize that she's somewhere out in there in the midst of sharks?”He tilted his head. “But we can't be sure they have her. She might have just—”I flew across the foyer between us and grabbed his throat, my fingers tightening around his core. “You must have forgotten what it's like when I'm impatient, demon,” I sneered in his face. “You wouldn't want a reminder, would you?”“I-I’m sorry,” he choked out, his eyes bulging, veins bulging in his neck and forehead. He looked like a weak puppy. The sight unsettled me for a brief moment. An ugly voice in the back of my mind whispered that I was being too hard. With an exasperated sigh, I released him with a shove. My fingers trembled as they fell to my sides. I could not exactly remember when last I crashed out this bad. But this
QUINN“Put me down, Kallum. What the hell?”He finally listened when we got away from the chaos. He put me down after we went out the back door. The surprise had been so overwhelming that the scream came late. How did Kallum come to be in the same restaurant at the same time? As he whisked me out, I realized that this could not be a coincidence. Showing up in the midst of a shootout did not seem like a coincidence at all.“What are you doing here?” I demanded as soon as my feet hit the ground. He looked at me with wild, red-rimmed eyes. He still had that…wrong air about him. “That's not how you thank me for getting you to safety.”I heaved a sigh. “Kallum, listen, thank you. Really. But I have to get back in there, maybe find Luciano and warn him about—”“What is it about him for goodness' sake?” he cut in bluntly. “Can you not look at me for just a moment and see how much you're hurting me?”I stared at him for a moment, really looked at him. I was curious to see what had him on su
LUCIANOFuck. The day had been going so well until it wasn't. It had started just right with teasing Lilith and seeing how much she could take of my spontaneous actions. It felt so good licking her clean on that table when everyone else stood outside, waiting. I enjoyed the way she bucked in my arms, the way she tasted. God, I could still taste her hours after that encounter that had me bone-hard. Then on my way out, I'd been struck with the most random but tempting idea. Take her to dinner, make her feel as beautiful as she is. I wasn't sure what came over me, but I just went with it.And here we were, at the restaurant. Her beauty kept me locked in a kind of trance the whole time. At some point, it became more than just the physical. I was drawn to an aura around her I could not name. It was something beyond a pretty face and smile and frown. It was a fierce spirit…the kind I once admired in someone else. That spirit flared when I mentioned her father. I wondered if it meant anyt
QUINNThe restaurant was nothing like the ones I'd ever been in…or even worked in, back when I still lived my life as Quinn Parker. The one Luciano took us to had polished wooden floors and pendant lights hanging from the ceilings. It was such a dreamy and beautiful space, with very few people who barely even looked at us as we breezed past. The interior screamed privacy. The cars parked in the lots screamed wealth. We were led to an alcove with a beautiful view of the city’s nightlife. To my surprise, Luciano pulled the seat out for me. My gaze burned into him as he walked the other half of the table and sat across from me. “Welcome, sir, ma'am,” the waitress had her eyes on him the entire time. Everything about her screamed flirtatious. Even her dress and how it was pulled down her cleavage. My gaze flicked back to Luciano. His hot gaze was already on me. Did he possibly frequent this place? I wondered if he'd come here alone…if he'd bring someone else that was not his wife.I ber
KALLUMThe past few days had thrived on mixed feelings that had me questioning everything about myself…everything around me. There was something that ate away at me ever since that incident. It had gotten worse since I woke up with strange tattoos on my arms, with no memory of how I came to have them, except the strange piece which apparently had turned out to be a dream. Since then I've had a few other out-of-body experiences I can't even explain. I just knew something was off with me, and it had to do with the wrong, suffocating energy I felt in the air lately. It was there whenever I looked in the mirror. It stared back in the violet eyes, a splash of red. It was in the scratch marks around my neck. It was in the way I yelled at Lilith just a few minutes ago. Usually, I would never do that. I would never raise my voice at a woman I loved so much it hurt. I mean, yelling at her would only hurt me more. So why did I do it? Why did I keep hurting her, recently? After I left her off
QUINNWhen I returned to my desk, I found a text on my phone. It was from Luciano. >>Be ready for dinner at 7.I stared at the text for a long moment, fury burning in my chest. Why did he think he could just do whatever he wanted and get away with it? What makes him think I'll go to dinner with him after what went down a few minutes ago? After coveting the CEO position?I scoffed and threw the phone into my bag. I worked until it was dark outside. Simply because I wanted to rebel and prove that he could not control me. Fiona left early as she had an appointment outside the office. She offered to get me dinner before leaving, but I politely declined. It was later I realized how stupid that had been. Hunger pangs were already settling in my stomach, distracting me from the work I was doing, reminding me why I should be anywhere but at the office. I pulled back from the system and stretched. Yawning, I cracked my knuckles behind me. One look at the clock on the table, and I screamed.
QuinnGoosebumps and euphoria washed down my spine simultaneously. For a moment, I thought I stood in paradise. A paradise of gold and midnight blue and flickering flames. The thick draperies were of the same midnight blue as the high walls, it was difficult to tell them apart. Candlelight chandel
QuinnMy first impulse was to turn and flee, because there was no way I was going in there if this man was really Lilith’s stepbrother. Undoubtedly, he was. Those violet eyes were too beautiful to miss. The gold mask flew off, and I became even more certain.Good heavens. Why is he here, anyway?
Quinn An outrageous need for rebellion pounded in my head. In my chest. Between my eyes. Fuming and cursing all day did nothing to help my situation. I need my freedom now more than ever. After being blatantly told by that asshole that I'm not allowed to leave this cage without his permission.
QuinnIt's been more than fifteen hours since my brief encounter with the grim reaper, and I was still shaken up and trembling with anger. Each time I thought back to being close to him and staring deep into the brown depths of his eyes, electric tingles raced through my veins. Each time I remembe
