Every day for the last three weeks I had been hauled up in the council rooms, trying to come up with a war plan.

It had been a long and arduous process. One that at some points I thought was fruitless.

But for all the blows we had received thus far, there was a shining light of hope. The scouting mission to the south had been a success, and our men had found a way through to the south coast. With the southern routes open, it meant that there was no place for an ambush. But at the same time, it left us completely open to William knowing what we were up too.

Using the cover of darkness, Arthur had managed to lead an expedition away to Somerset, some miles west. He would not return for some while seeing as he would have to go by sea around the leg of Cornwall and land in Bristol to ensure he avoided alerting my uncle. A mission that was pointless from the council’s point of view, but from mine w
