Chapter 2

作者: Bright Lights
A distinctive notification tone cut me off mid-sentence.

Caleb's phone lit up. The message was from a contact saved as "Wifey."

[Caleb, are we really married now? I'm so excited I haven't slept all night. How am I supposed to work today?!]

I knew it was Yara.

After seeing her social media post, I'd watched both of them change their profile pictures to matching couple photos.

Meanwhile, Caleb had always insisted on keeping things "professional" with me. In his phone, I was nothing more than the cold, impersonal "Yvette Lane."

He'd apparently forgotten I was standing there, because he immediately typed back.

[Then come to the office now. You can sleep in my office so you don't oversleep, sleepyhead.]

So that was why he'd still been awake when I came home. He hadn't stayed up waiting for me. He'd been too excited about marrying Yara to sleep.

Caleb finally noticed where I was looking and calmly turned off his screen.

"It's her first time getting married. She's so nervous and excited she can't sleep. I'm only trying to make sure it doesn't affect her work. And the contact name is just for her parents' benefit. I'll change it back later."

A year ago, he'd still looked nervous whenever he had to explain himself. Now he could lie to my face without even blinking.

Maybe I should have congratulated him on how adaptable he'd become.

I still remembered the first time Yara Cole's name had ever come out of his mouth.

Back then, she was just the careless delivery girl who'd scraped his car and made him late for a business dinner.

For days afterward, Caleb complained to me about her. He couldn't understand how anyone could be so clueless, chasing him around for more than two weeks over the three-thousand-dollar repair bill and insisting on running errands for him until she'd worked off what she owed.

I'd even been stupid enough to tell him not to give her such a hard time.

Then Caleb, a man who supposedly never bent his principles, suddenly made an exception and hired her. He told me she was hardworking and ambitious, and he didn't want to see her potential go to waste.

I'd thought it was a rare act of kindness.

I hadn't realized it was the beginning of a nightmare.

I should have understood sooner. Whether he was complaining about her or praising her, the fact remained that Yara had already taken up his attention.

Now they were legally married.

So what did that make me?

I lowered my eyes with a bitter smile and turned to take my mother's ashes to the bedroom.

Caleb stepped in front of me and flicked disdainfully at my hair.

"Yvette, you're sleeping on the couch tonight. Look at you. You're filthy. Anyone who saw you would think I'd dragged some homeless woman in off the street."

Not once did he ask what I was holding.

All he saw was the dirt and dust covering me.

I clutched the urn tighter and bit down hard on my lip, refusing to let the tears come.

He was the reason for every bit of this.

If Caleb hadn't thrown my mother and me out of the car, I never would have dropped to my knees in the middle of the road, begging passing drivers to help us until my forehead split open and bled. I wouldn't have crawled forward on my knees in desperation until the fabric of my pants wore through in two ragged holes.

As soon as he finished speaking, Caleb glanced at his fingertips and saw the dried blood he'd picked up from my hair.

Something seemed to register.

His lips parted, and guilt flickered briefly across his face.

"Forget it. Go sleep in the bedroom."

Then, as though that somehow made everything right, he added, "Don't worry. Once I talk some sense into Yara's stubborn parents and get them to stop interfering with her career, I'll divorce her, and we'll have our wedding. Your mom will be thrilled."

For a moment, I was back at the hospital, feeling my mother's fingers clutch mine with the last of her strength.

"Yvette, don't ever get on your knees for anyone. After I'm gone, take care of yourself."

So this time, I shook my head.

"No. I don't need that anymore."

Caleb stared at me.

The same promise that had worked on me every other time had failed twice in one night, and he clearly couldn't understand why.

He couldn't be bothered to think about it for long.

"Yvette, stop making problems where there aren't any. I'm not the one in a rush to get married anyway. I'm going to work."

He changed into a suit and headed for the door. Just before leaving, he paused.

"I'll drive carefully..."

The old me would have immediately fussed over him, warning him again and again to be careful and telling him to get some rest. He'd clearly spoken first to cut me off before I could start.

But I was exhausted in every possible way.

"Do whatever you want."

Caleb froze.

For some reason, his expression darkened. He slammed the door behind him hard enough to make my ears ring.

After showering, I cleaned up the guest room, curled around my mother's urn, and finally fell asleep.

Two hours later, my alarm went off.

I forced myself awake, washed up, and went straight to the office to resign. I wanted it done as quickly as possible.

The company had gone public the year before. Blinded by love and determined to protect Caleb's position as CEO, I'd transferred every share I owned to him.

I had nothing left.

I assumed that would at least make resigning simple.

Instead, the HR lady looked at me uneasily.

"Yvette, it's not that I don't want to help you. Mr. Foster gave me specific instructions. If you ever tried to resign, he has to personally sign off on it first."

One corner of Caleb's blanket had slipped aside.Underneath, blood had soaked through a large section of the sheets. The wound on his wrist was still seeping, and from the amount of blood beneath him, it was obvious he'd cut himself some time ago.No wonder his face had been so pale, his voice barely more than a whisper. The nurse immediately called for help, and he was rushed into emergency treatment. Even after they took him away, the metallic smell of blood seemed to linger in my nose.In the end, the blood loss was too severe.Caleb died.As his only remaining family, Xavier came to handle the arrangements. When Caleb's ashes were handed to him, he turned around and dropped the urn straight into a trash can.My fingers curled slightly, but I said nothing.I simply turned and walked away. After seven years together, staying until the end was more than enough. Not long after I took my former coworkers overseas with me, I heard that Yara's condition had worsened before her case ever m

Xavier's expression changed instantly. Panic flashed across his face as he pulled me into a crushing hug."I'm sorry. I never thought Caleb would be that disgusting, that he'd treat you so heartlessly. I swear I didn't mean for any of this to happen. "I got revenge for you! Look at what happened to Caleb. And Yara too. I promise she'll spend the rest of her life behind bars. I'm already making them pay for what they did to you and your mom!"Watching him shove all the blame onto everyone but himself only made me sick.I tore myself out of his arms."You got what you wanted. Caleb's life is ruined because of you. What reason do you have to keep pretending now?"Xavier's eyes filled with tears."Yvette, I liked you first. I was the one who saw you first!"The year Caleb started college, his father came to visit him. I secretly came along. You were sitting in class by the window. You saw me outside and smiled at me."He took you from me. After that, he did everything he could to keep me

Xavier froze, then blinked at me with an innocent expression."Yvette, what are you talking about? Just because I'd take a little satisfaction in Caleb getting what was coming to him, that makes me some kind of monster?"The harmless look on his face sent a chill racing up my spine."There was something I could never figure out. Why was Yara so determined to cling to Caleb? Why was she so fixated on getting rid of me? And how did she know exactly what he liked well enough to win him over so easily?"Xavier rubbed his chin thoughtfully."Maybe it was coincidence. Or maybe she'd done her homework because she wanted to land a rich guy."I gave a humorless smile."Really? Then explain something to me. Yara grew up poor. Where did she get the nerve to scheme her way into that much of Caleb's money? And once she had all that money, why come back and provoke him? She was practically asking to get herself killed."Xavier nodded solemnly."People who suddenly come into more money than they know

The document was a transfer agreement handing the company over to Yara, complete with Caleb's signature. After what had happened with my resignation letter, I wasn't exactly surprised that Caleb had managed to sign something like this too.Yara was bold, and Caleb was an idiot.Thank God I'd gotten out when I did. Otherwise, I'd probably be the one cleaning up this disaster too.Caleb let out a furious roar and lunged for the document."It doesn't count! I signed it without knowing what it was. It's not valid!"Yara looked completely unfazed."You signed it the day we got married. I asked if you'd give me the company, and you said yes."Caleb's face flushed red."That was a joke!"Yara looked at him as though he were something she'd scraped off the bottom of her shoe."A joke? Caleb, the only reason you're in this mess is because you couldn't make up your mind about what you wanted. You brought this on yourself. If you'd just stayed with me instead of running after Yvette, I never woul

Caleb clearly hadn't expected me to agree. His head snapped up, disbelief all over his face. But I wasn't doing it for him.I was thinking about the employees who had been with the company for years. Realistically, many of them were older now. If the company collapsed, starting over somewhere else wouldn't be easy.I left Caleb to his surprise and went straight to Natalie.I asked for permission to build a team of my own and return home to recruit a group of experienced employees.Natalie trusted me completely. The moment she heard I planned to bring in people as capable as I was, she lit up and immediately submitted the proposal to headquarters.Headquarters took it seriously too. The request was approved almost at once, and I was given a month to put the team together. With everything settled, Caleb and I flew back together. At the airport, Xavier suddenly appeared. All his casts were gone. He looked completely recovered, dressed in a tailored suit and looking so polished that I almo

I was a little surprised to see that he'd changed her contact name, though I had no idea when he'd done it.Not that it mattered to me. I had no interest in asking. These days, even the sight of Yara's name seemed to irritate Caleb. His brows knitted together so tightly that anyone looking at him might have thought there was something filthy lying on the table instead of his phone. He genuinely regretted ever hiring her in the first place, much less indulging her the way he had. When he looked up at me, he gave an awkward smile and reached to decline the call."Sorry. Spam."I raised an eyebrow. "Answer it. It might be important."Caleb paused. Then he accepted the call and deliberately put it on speaker.Yara's voice came through, as eager to please as ever."Caleb, you've been overseas for more than two weeks. I miss you so much. I know I was wrong. I promise I won't upset you anymore. Can you please let me come back to the company?"Caleb glanced at me on purpose before clearing his
