Chapter 8

作者: Bright Lights
Behind me, Caleb's face darkened.

Yara deliberately called after him, "Caleb, go after her!"

His hands curled into fists, his nails digging into his palms, but he stubbornly held his ground.

"I didn't say anything that wasn't true. She's the one who started this... Besides, we're supposed to be getting married. Let her throw her tantrum. The next time her mom starts pressuring her about the wedding, she'll be the one regretting it."

I had slowed for half a step.

At those words, I walked even faster.

Caleb Foster, I would never look back again.

I checked into the first hotel I found. Not long afterward, Megan messaged to tell me my resignation had been fully processed. All I had left to do was pick up the last of my paperwork whenever I had time.

The company alternated between five- and six-day workweeks, so I knew she'd gone out of her way to rush everything through and even come in on Sunday for me. I thanked her and booked a flight to Northvale for the next morning.

The following day, I went to the office in casual clothes.

The latest promotion list had already been posted on the bulletin board.

I glanced over it.

My name still wasn't there.

Yara's was.

She had just been promoted to manager.

So much for all those principles Caleb was always preaching about.

I'd ranked first in performance again and again, yet I was still only a team lead. Yara consistently came in at the bottom, and she was already well on her way to becoming an executive.

At this point, why didn't he just hand her the entire company?

Maybe because I was leaving, none of it mattered anymore.

Perhaps this was what it meant to be truly done. There wasn't even enough feeling left to be angry.

I had no idea where Caleb came from, but suddenly he stepped in front of the promotion list, blocking it from view.

His voice dropped.

"I'll promote you next time."

I looked away.

"That won't be necessary, Mr. Foster."

I had already resigned.

Caleb only assumed I was sulking. His gaze swept over my clothes, and his brows drew together sharply.

"What are you wearing today? I approved your raise two days ago, and now you think you can do whatever you want? Keep this up, and I'll take it back. Then let's see how you pay for your mother's treatment."

A dull ache spread through the hollow place inside my chest.

Even now, he was still trying to use my mother against me.

Yara walked over as well, putting on her usual concerned expression.

"Yvette, you really shouldn't be so greedy. Just apologize to Caleb, promise you'll stop interfering in who he spends time with, and he said he might consider giving you the wedding you want."

Caleb's expression eased.

"Exactly. Yvette, if you can stop being so controlling, I'm not saying we can't work things out."

He paused, as though graciously offering me a compromise.

"I can go file for divorce from Yara today. If your mom is really that impatient, we can have the wedding in as little as three days. We'll take our honeymoon, and when we get back, we'll go to the city hall and make it official."

The words came far too smoothly.

He had clearly spent the entire night thinking this plan through.

But Caleb, my mother was already dead.

And I didn't want to marry you anymore.

"No need," I said coldly. "I wouldn't dream of breaking up a happy marriage. Mr. Foster, I wish you and Ms. Cole a long and happy life together."

Caleb's chest rose and fell with anger.

Just then, Megan spotted me and called from her office.

"Yvette, what are you standing around for? Come on!"

The second Caleb realized someone else was there, he immediately stepped away from me, putting distance between us.

I almost laughed.

He kept talking about marrying me, yet in public, he avoided me more carefully than he would a stranger.

His hand curled into a fist.

Then, apparently desperate to cover himself, he said loudly, "Yvette was late today. Dock her entire month's pay."

Megan blinked.

"Mr. Foster, Yvette already resigned. Did you forget?"

She handed me my paperwork, then sighed and gave my shoulder a gentle pat.

"My condolences, Yvette. I'm sure your mother would want you to heal and move forward. Have a safe trip, and I hope everything goes well for you overseas."

Caleb went completely still.

"My condolences?"

He repeated the words slowly, as though he couldn't make sense of them.

Then he turned to me, disbelief written all over his face, silently demanding an explanation.

I simply took the paperwork from Megan.

"Yeah. My flight's in a few hours. I'm leaving today."

One corner of Caleb's blanket had slipped aside.Underneath, blood had soaked through a large section of the sheets. The wound on his wrist was still seeping, and from the amount of blood beneath him, it was obvious he'd cut himself some time ago.No wonder his face had been so pale, his voice barely more than a whisper. The nurse immediately called for help, and he was rushed into emergency treatment. Even after they took him away, the metallic smell of blood seemed to linger in my nose.In the end, the blood loss was too severe.Caleb died.As his only remaining family, Xavier came to handle the arrangements. When Caleb's ashes were handed to him, he turned around and dropped the urn straight into a trash can.My fingers curled slightly, but I said nothing.I simply turned and walked away. After seven years together, staying until the end was more than enough. Not long after I took my former coworkers overseas with me, I heard that Yara's condition had worsened before her case ever m

Xavier's expression changed instantly. Panic flashed across his face as he pulled me into a crushing hug."I'm sorry. I never thought Caleb would be that disgusting, that he'd treat you so heartlessly. I swear I didn't mean for any of this to happen. "I got revenge for you! Look at what happened to Caleb. And Yara too. I promise she'll spend the rest of her life behind bars. I'm already making them pay for what they did to you and your mom!"Watching him shove all the blame onto everyone but himself only made me sick.I tore myself out of his arms."You got what you wanted. Caleb's life is ruined because of you. What reason do you have to keep pretending now?"Xavier's eyes filled with tears."Yvette, I liked you first. I was the one who saw you first!"The year Caleb started college, his father came to visit him. I secretly came along. You were sitting in class by the window. You saw me outside and smiled at me."He took you from me. After that, he did everything he could to keep me

Xavier froze, then blinked at me with an innocent expression."Yvette, what are you talking about? Just because I'd take a little satisfaction in Caleb getting what was coming to him, that makes me some kind of monster?"The harmless look on his face sent a chill racing up my spine."There was something I could never figure out. Why was Yara so determined to cling to Caleb? Why was she so fixated on getting rid of me? And how did she know exactly what he liked well enough to win him over so easily?"Xavier rubbed his chin thoughtfully."Maybe it was coincidence. Or maybe she'd done her homework because she wanted to land a rich guy."I gave a humorless smile."Really? Then explain something to me. Yara grew up poor. Where did she get the nerve to scheme her way into that much of Caleb's money? And once she had all that money, why come back and provoke him? She was practically asking to get herself killed."Xavier nodded solemnly."People who suddenly come into more money than they know

The document was a transfer agreement handing the company over to Yara, complete with Caleb's signature. After what had happened with my resignation letter, I wasn't exactly surprised that Caleb had managed to sign something like this too.Yara was bold, and Caleb was an idiot.Thank God I'd gotten out when I did. Otherwise, I'd probably be the one cleaning up this disaster too.Caleb let out a furious roar and lunged for the document."It doesn't count! I signed it without knowing what it was. It's not valid!"Yara looked completely unfazed."You signed it the day we got married. I asked if you'd give me the company, and you said yes."Caleb's face flushed red."That was a joke!"Yara looked at him as though he were something she'd scraped off the bottom of her shoe."A joke? Caleb, the only reason you're in this mess is because you couldn't make up your mind about what you wanted. You brought this on yourself. If you'd just stayed with me instead of running after Yvette, I never woul

Caleb clearly hadn't expected me to agree. His head snapped up, disbelief all over his face. But I wasn't doing it for him.I was thinking about the employees who had been with the company for years. Realistically, many of them were older now. If the company collapsed, starting over somewhere else wouldn't be easy.I left Caleb to his surprise and went straight to Natalie.I asked for permission to build a team of my own and return home to recruit a group of experienced employees.Natalie trusted me completely. The moment she heard I planned to bring in people as capable as I was, she lit up and immediately submitted the proposal to headquarters.Headquarters took it seriously too. The request was approved almost at once, and I was given a month to put the team together. With everything settled, Caleb and I flew back together. At the airport, Xavier suddenly appeared. All his casts were gone. He looked completely recovered, dressed in a tailored suit and looking so polished that I almo

I was a little surprised to see that he'd changed her contact name, though I had no idea when he'd done it.Not that it mattered to me. I had no interest in asking. These days, even the sight of Yara's name seemed to irritate Caleb. His brows knitted together so tightly that anyone looking at him might have thought there was something filthy lying on the table instead of his phone. He genuinely regretted ever hiring her in the first place, much less indulging her the way he had. When he looked up at me, he gave an awkward smile and reached to decline the call."Sorry. Spam."I raised an eyebrow. "Answer it. It might be important."Caleb paused. Then he accepted the call and deliberately put it on speaker.Yara's voice came through, as eager to please as ever."Caleb, you've been overseas for more than two weeks. I miss you so much. I know I was wrong. I promise I won't upset you anymore. Can you please let me come back to the company?"Caleb glanced at me on purpose before clearing his
