Eran POV

The shift in the air happened before anyone moved.

Lincoln tried to step forward, but the elders were faster. Their bodies moved with a quiet, practiced authority, hands rising to block his path. Lincoln’s shoulders went rigid. I didn’t look at him for long, I didn’t need to. I already knew what I’d see in his eyes, fury, disbelief, maybe the sting of betrayal. None of it mattered now.

“Come,” one of the elders murmurs. The elders guided me forward. Their palms were firm against my back, ushering me toward the light of the doorway as if I were already theirs to command. As if I had always been meant to stand in this exact spot.

Outside, the pack had gathered.

Rows upon rows of them stretched across the clearing. These were faces I’d known since I was a child. They had looked at me with expectation once, and later, with a heavy, lingering doubt. Now, they just stared. Some wore open resentment, others had masked their fear behind blank expressions. I took my time looking back

Rachael POVMy body locked in place, breath snagging so hard it hurt. I could hear my own pulse louder than anything else, pounding behind my ears.I didn’t move at first. Fear rooted me where I stood, cold and heavy in my chest. Then instinct kicked in and I leaned just enough to peer past Eryx’s shoulder. He was still in front of me.Always in front of me.Broad, unyielding, his stance already set like a wall as if the sound alone had confirmed what he’d been preparing for all along. His body shifted slightly, ready to strike if needed. He hadn’t even looked back to check on me, and somehow that steadiness steadied me too.My gaze slid past him.The man.The one Eryx had tied up earlier, was standing several steps away now, gun still raised, smoke curling faintly from the barrel. At his feet lay the bear, massive and unmoving, its presence suddenly unreal now that it was still. It took my mind a moment to catch up.He shot it.He saved us.Eryx’s growl tore from his chest, low and f

Eryx POVThe thought of the man tied up inside the cabin sat at the back of my mind quietly. It was unsettling, but Eryx had handled it. He’d put the intruder in check, and even though the situation was tense, it felt controlled. Control didn’t mean cruelty, though. We fed him every day—water, food and long stretches of silence. It was the only way I could sleep at night without feeling like we were becoming something we weren't.I stepped outside and found Eryx in the clearing. His back was to me, his axe rising and falling in a steady swing. Each strike landed with a dull thud that seemed to echo through the trees. Wood chips scattered over his boots. Watching the way his shoulders moved, I felt that familiar pull in my chest, a mix of tension and a strange, soft ache.He sensed me before I spoke. He always did.Eryx stopped mid swing and lowered the axe, resting the head of it against the chopping stump. When he turned, his eyes went straight to mine. He didn't just look at me, he

Lincoln POVI paced the length of my room, my steps echoing against the hardwood floor, the silence between them feeling heavier than it should. Athena stormed in, her chest heaving, her hair wild from the rush and I froze mid step.“What’s wrong?” I asked, my voice sharper than I intended, but I couldn’t help it. Something in the way she looked at me, fright etched into every line of her face made my stomach twist. She took a few unsteady steps toward me, eyes wide, hands trembling slightly at her sides. “Lincoln… it’s Eran,” she said, her voice quivering despite the effort to sound composed. “I can feel it… when he rules, it’s going to be cruel. I just… I can feel it in my bones. He won’t care for anyone. Not for anyone.”I stopped pacing, letting out a long slow sigh, running a hand down my face as I tried to steady the knot of unease coiling in my chest. I’d known this day would come, had expected it, but hearing it from her made it feel so imminent, so terrifyingly real. “I know,

Eryx POVI stepped out of the cabin with my shoulders squared and my spine straight, the night yawning wide before me. Darkness pressed in from every side. Behind me, I felt Rachael, small, trembling and pressed close to my back. Her fingers clutched the fabric of my shirt like it was the only thing anchoring her to this world. I could feel her fear the way I felt a storm gathering under my skin.“Don’t be afraid,” I murmured without turning, keeping my voice low, steady. Calm. I needed her to believe me, even if she couldn’t see my face. “Stay behind me.”I took another step forward, then another, my boots crunching softly against the dirt. The cabin’s weak light spilled out behind us. Somewhere ahead, a shape shifted. Then I saw him.A man stood just beyond the reach of the light, his stance wide, deliberate. He held a pistol out in front of him, both hands wrapped around it, the barrel aimed straight at my chest. The metal caught a faint glint of moonlight. His finger rested too ea

  • The Last Of Her Pack   #60. An intruder

Rachael POVIt had been four days since Eryx and I had been holed up in the cabin, and I was almost afraid of how quickly he was recovering. He moved differently now, lighter and surer. I watched him the day before, tracking and then taking down an antelope with ease. The pride and admiration I felt made my chest ache in a way I didn’t expect.I lay on his chest now, feeling the rise and fall of his breathing, the warmth radiating through him. My fingers traced the faint scars along his shoulder, reminders of battles fought and pain endured. I couldn’t help but wonder at the depth of his resilience, the kind that made him so terrifyingly powerful yet heartbreakingly human at the same time.“Why did you challenge your father for the throne?” I asked softly, my voice almost drowned out by the quiet crackle of the fire.Eryx shifted slightly under me, his hand brushing my hair away from my face, and I felt the weight of a thousand untold stories in his gaze. “Because of the way he lived,
