Chapter 2

Author: Mister Rhapsody
My destination was Drakemoor too. I had only taken this ride because my own car had broken down.

And I had traveled this mountain road countless times before.

I knew this road well. It was close to a popular tourist area, so there was no reason for the cell signal to disappear.

Yet the moment our car broke down, all our phones lost signal at the exact same time.

That meant there was only one possibility. Someone had used a signal jammer.

But I kept that information to myself. I didn't want to alert or provoke the killer.

After giving them the explanation I had prepared, I said, "I used to be a doctor. I could tell right away that her death wasn't natural. I asked everyone to introduce themselves so we could narrow down the list of suspects and keep everyone else safe.

"Your car was working perfectly, yet it suddenly broke down. That could have been done on purpose. And if the killer planned this in advance, then he must have known the victim.

"So, based on what we know, the best way to find the killer is to look for something suspicious about his identity."

During the entire trip, the four passengers had barely spoken. The only one who talked a lot was the driver.

That meant that, on the surface, the five of us were complete strangers.

But the killer clearly knew the dead woman, and he was pretending that he didn't.

"Why should I believe you?" the driver demanded.

He was still gripping the wrench tightly.

I raised both hands to show that I wasn't a threat. "You don't have to believe me. We can stay quiet and wait here until morning. But do you really think the killer will just sit around with us and wait for help and the police to arrive?"

The killer had chosen this method because he wanted to get away with murder. He must have had another plan to cover his tracks.

For us, the best choice was to expose everything and force the killer into a situation where he had to defend himself.

That meant only one of the four of us would resist my suggestion—the killer.

The driver seemed to realize this too.

He gritted his teeth and said, "I'm the driver, so I'll go first. I didn't know the victim at all. She got my car through the ride-hailing app. Look. Here's the trip record from the app. It shows that the system assigned her to me automatically.

"And I already told you that I suddenly got a job in Drakemoor, but I couldn't get a ticket, so I had no choice but to drive there myself. There's no way I'm the killer!"

After he finished, the other three passengers looked at me and waited for my response.

My earlier words had clearly established me as the one in charge.

"Sir, I need to search your car to verify what you just said."

He didn't hesitate. "Go ahead. Search it all you want. But if you're going to search my car, then search everyone's luggage too. The woman looks like she was poisoned. Maybe we can find the poison!"

I let out a quiet breath of relief. He had said exactly what I wanted to say.

I already believed the driver, Melvin Winston, was probably innocent.

But I still needed to search the luggage for the signal jammer.

I had deliberately kept the jammer a secret.

If I told everyone about it, the killer might realize that I was onto him and kill someone else.

After searching Melvin's luggage, I found nothing suspicious.

Next, I reached for the pregnant woman's backpack.

But the moment I picked it up, she suddenly jumped and snatched it back from me. "I... I'm not the killer, but you can't touch anything inside!"

  • The Last Passenger   Chapter 9

I stared blankly at Elias. I couldn't understand what he meant.Christine had been dead for three years. I couldn't understand what her death had to do with the murders from last night. After a moment, Elias asked another question: "Caleb, do you remember why Christine was in the car accident?"She was the woman I had loved more than anyone. Of course I should have known.I instinctively tried to answer. But then I realized something terrifying. I couldn't remember what had caused Christine's accident or what had happened before it.The only thing I remembered was that she had died on my operating table. After that, I had quit my job because I was overwhelmed with grief. Then I had left Drakemoor, the place that held so many painful memories. But I couldn't remember why I had returned to Vellenmark.I couldn't even remember how Christine had died.I started hitting my head with my fists. "Remember! Come on, remember!"Elias quickly called a doctor and had me given another sedative. He

My head started hurting again. I had no idea what was happening to me.But Elias immediately pulled out a photograph and spoke in a sharp voice. "Caleb, you said your car broke down. Do you remember how it happened?"I couldn't answer.I couldn't think clearly at all. I could only sit there and take in whatever information he gave me.The photograph in Elias's hand showed a car that had been taken apart and badly damaged.Elias pointed at it. "This is your car. You damaged it yourself. You wanted to study how cars were built so you could figure out how to make Melvin's car break down on the road."Does your head still hurt? You still can't remember? Then watch Melvin's dashcam footage. We've already recovered it."Do you see it? There were only four people in the car from beginning to end. There was never any man in a trench coat."Everything the man in the trench coat said and did in your statement was actually said and done by you."Melvin and Ruby were talking to you the entire time

  • The Last Passenger   Chapter 7

"Do you really think you're going to survive?"I quietly repeated the words the man in the trench coat had said before jumping off the cliff. He had planned everything from the beginning. His goal was to kill everyone else and pin the murders on me."Haha, Officer, stop pretending. You must have used your authority to alter the ride records and make me look guilty..."The officer beside Elias suddenly stood up and slammed his hand on the table. "Caleb, watch your words! You know better than anyone whether you killed them. Do you really think making up some imaginary person will get you out of this?"Of course I knew.I had watched the man in the trench coat kill Melvin and Ruby with my own eyes. He had even tried to kill me.Yet now, the police were calling me the murderer. My anger reached its limit. Strangely, that was when I became calm. I closed my eyes and stopped talking. No matter what they asked, I refused to answer.Elias placed my earlier statement in front of me. "Caleb, acc

I glared at him through clenched teeth. "I'm telling you again. I didn't kill anyone! If you've already decided to frame me, then why bother pretending to question me? Just convict me!"But I want to see how you're going to erase the evidence left by the man in the trench coat. He's dead, but his ride history still exists on the app. Aren't you afraid the truth will come out?"I clenched my fists in anger.A hint of confusion appeared in Elias's cold eyes.He quietly gave an order to the officer beside him.The officer immediately stood up and left the room.Only then did Elias look back at me. "Please tell us everything that happened yesterday. Don't leave out a single detail. If there really was a fifth person, we won't wrongfully accuse you."I wondered if he had changed his attitude because he was starting to worry. But I also felt some of the tension leave my body, and I began to recall everything that had happened the night before. Then I told them the entire story from the momen

  • The Last Passenger   Chapter 5

I was sitting in the back seat of the police car, trapped between two officers. They clearly thought I was a dangerous murderer."I didn't kill anyone!" I shouted desperately. "The real killer jumped off the cliff! If you search the area now, you'll find his body!"But the two officers beside me didn't answer. The officer in the passenger seat turned around and glanced at me.I had heard the other officers call him Captain Thompson, so I immediately struggled against the handcuffs. "I'm not lying! You're police officers. Can't you find the evidence the killer left behind? Did the rain last night wash everything away? No! That's impossible! His blood is still here. Look!"I raised my blood-covered fist. "When I discovered that he was the killer, I fought him and injured his face. Take this blood for testing! You'll be able to identify the real killer!"Elias Thompson only stared at me coldly. He looked at me as if I were some kind of monster. As if I were a vicious murderer. "There is n

  • The Last Passenger   Chapter 4

After I pinned him down, I punched him in the face several times with all my strength. He didn't have time to react. Blood spilled from his mouth. But that disgusting smile was still on his face. "Why are you saying I'm the killer?"I gritted my teeth and punched him a few more times. "Because I know the patient you mentioned! Christine has been dead for a long time! Why would you go visit a dead person?"Those punches drained what little strength I had left. I had to stop for a moment and stare at him, waiting for his answer. But I never expected him to still have the strength to fight back.He suddenly grabbed my hair and pulled me to the ground. Then he flipped over and pinned me beneath him.I wrapped my arms around him with all my strength, and we struggled against each other.I looked desperately at Melvin and Ruby. "What are you waiting for? Help me! He's the killer! Once he kills me, he'll come after both of you!"But they just stood there. They stared at me in fear and didn't
