Dominic stopped mid-step.

A frown pulled at his face. Doubt and struggle flashed in his eyes. The body in the corner was too quiet. It unsettled him.

He clenched his jaw. "Boss, let me just take a look."

"Dominic... I feel so dizzy."

A weak whimper cut him off.

Camilla went completely limp. She slipped off the sterile bed, falling toward the floor like a feather.

Dominic's expression flipped instantly.

He spun around and caught Camilla right before she hit the ground.

"Boss, Miss Gianna has been gone for a week."At the long table meeting, the oldest elder kept his head down. Finally, he broke the dead silence."The West Side is getting messy. The family cannot go a single day without an heir.""Camilla was a traitor. We are all sorry. But for the family's future, you can take in a clean, obedient kid from a branch family. Make them your own..."A deafening gunshot echoed.A bullet grazed the elder's cheek, leaving a bloody streak.Every capo and top man at the table froze. Cold sweat soaked their backs.Alessia sat at the head of the table. She didn't even stand up. She just held the gun in one hand."The Bellini family has only one heir. Gianna."Alessia's voice was hoarse. Her tone was pure, unquestionable cruelty."Whoever says the word adoption again goes straight to the West Side flooded cell. They can keep Dominic company."Everyone on both sides of the table dropped their heads. Nobody dared to breathe too loud. After the funeral, Alessia di

Those words stabbed into Alessia's heart like a poisoned blade. The last spark of light in the Boss's eyes died out. She had ruled the New York underworld for twenty years. Now, her eyes held nothing. She slowly stood up straight. Blood still dripped from her pierced right hand. She acted like she felt no pain."Pregnant?"Alessia's voice was soft, but it froze the entire trauma room. She looked down at Camilla like she was looking at pure trash."Did you really think I'd let a traitor's bastard stain the Bellini carpets?"Camilla's smug smile froze instantly. She grabbed her stomach. The deadly danger finally registered. "You can't do this. This is Dominic's baby! It's family blood!""Family? Without my daughter, he would never be the underboss."Alessia turned her head. She looked at old Dr. Julian standing nearby."Julian."The old doctor's eyes were red. He bowed slightly. "Boss.""Take her down to the basement clinic."Alessia's voice was completely flat. It was terrifyingly cold.

Moments later, the trauma room doors crashed open."Doctor! Boss, I brought the doctor!"The butler rushed in, panting. Two guards followed right behind him. They were dragging old Dr. Julian by the arms.Julian still wore his dark green morgue scrubs from the basement. The sharp stench of formaldehyde instantly cut through the heavy smell of blood in the room.Alessia looked like she had found her last lifeline. She ignored the steel beam still impaled in her bleeding right hand. She barked orders at Julian."Julian! Save her! Use the best drugs. Bring her back! I'll give you your chief position back!"The untouchable Boss had lost all her dignity. She yanked on the old doctor's collar. Her voice was completely hoarse.Julian didn't move.He kept his head down. He stared blankly at the metal bed.He saw my pale blue face. He saw the broken steel beam sticking out of my chest. He saw the dark, dead blood pooling on the floor. The old man's eyes instantly filled with tears. This was his

Her pale fingers gripped his shirt tight."I'm fine. Ignore me. Gianna is more important. Go comfort her. Tell her to stop throwing a fit." She played the perfect victim. She buried her face in his neck. Huge tears rolled down her cheeks. Her body trembled. That tiny sliver of worry for me completely vanished from Dominic's eyes.He held her tight. He looked up at my corner again. His gaze turned cold and annoyed."Gianna, when are you going to stop this?"His voice echoed in the sterile

The alarm blared for three seconds. Then, a massive force yanked my soul out of my broken shell. All the pain vanished.I floated in mid-air. I had never felt so light.Minutes later, the heavy lead doors slid open.Alessia walked back in with Camilla and Dominic."Turn off that piece of junk." Alessia frowned. She glanced at the blank monitor. "It's giving Camilla a headache. Gianna, I'll count to three. If you want to play dead, don't blame me for getting mad."The nurse opened her mouth to speak. Instead, her hands shook as she quickly pulled all the plugs.I looked down.Under the bright hospital lights, Camilla leaned against Alessia's shoulder with a flushed face.Dominic was on one knee at her feet. The underboss who once swore to protect me with his life.He kept his head down. His focus was absolute. He carefully slipped a brand new pair of soft leather boots onto her feet."Is it too tight? Does it hurt?" Dominic's voice was low and full of patience.Camilla shook her head. H

Alessia looked down at me, confusion flashing in her eyes."Don't push your luck, Gianna." She looked almost helpless. "I already promised not to give you the cold shoulder anymore. What else do you want? Every time Camilla needs blood, you come up with a new trick.""I am not lying..." I clawed at the tiles, trembling as every breath ripped through my chest. "My marrow is already dry. Take more blood, and I will die, Mother..."Three years ago, our family took a hit. Camilla jumped in front of Alessia and took a bullet. Soon after, doctors diagnosed her with bone marrow failure. In the whole family, only my match worked.I knew I was Alessia's only daughter. Without her asking, I took it all on myself. I volunteered to make up for the half-life Camilla lost. From that day on, I became her walking blood bank.Later, even Alessia took it for granted."She bled for your mother! Keeping her alive is your damn duty!" Alessia crushed me with that iron rule for three long years.Three years.
