The other pack members filed out quickly, leaving just the five of us in a heavy silence.

“We should kill him,” Luna said flatly once the door closed. “Not because he betrayed us—I actually understand why he did it—but because we can’t afford to have a compromised pack member that Gray can continue to use against us. It’s a security risk we can’t contain.”

“We’re not killing him,” I said immediately, meeting Luna’s eyes. “There has to be another option.”

“Like what?” Luna challenged. “Exile? That leaves him vulnerable to Gray with all the information he’s already given her, plus whatever he picks up on his way out. Prison? Can’t exactly send him to human authorities. Isolation? That’s just slower execution.”

“We work with him,” Jake said quietly, and everyone turned to look at him. “We don’t kill him and we don’t exile him. We help him protect his family—actually protect them, not just promise to—and we turn him into a double agent feeding Gray false information while we gather intel

Calla’s POVWatching Leo say goodbye to his family was harder than I’d expected. His wife Maria was understandably confused and scared. She had only been told they had to leave right away for safety reasons, without any explanation that might put them in danger. Their daughter, Sofía, was clinging to Leo, crying because she didn’t want to leave her friends and school. Their son, Miguel, was trying to be brave, but kept asking when his dad would come to visit.“Soon,” Leo kept promising, his voice breaking with emotion. “I’ll come see you very soon, I promise.” Jake stepped in at that point, gently taking the kids by the hand and guiding Maria toward the cars with a mix of kindness and firmness that showed me why Kane had such confidence in him. “We’ll take good care of them,” Jake assured Leo quietly. “Your family will be safe. You have my word.”Once they were gone, Leo stood alone in the parking lot, looking completely empty inside. I recognized that feeling—the emptiness that come

Calla’s POVThe emergency pack meeting was called at three in the morning, which usually meant something serious had happened. I walked into the clubhouse to find Kane already there, looking furious. Luna had a scary expression, and Jake, who was usually calm, seemed chillingly angry. In the middle of the room sat Leo Martinez, a member who had switched from the Blood Fang pack to our Iron Fang pack after Marcus’s exile.“Someone want to tell me what’s going on?” I asked, my mind racing despite my tiredness. I noticed Leo’s hands were shaking, and though he didn't have any visible injuries, it was clear he was scared and guilty even without supernatural senses.“Leo was caught leaving Councilwoman Gray’s office two hours ago,” Luna said, her voice sharp and controlled, as if she was fighting to keep a handle on her emotions. “Mara was watching Gray’s building as part of our Intel work and saw him coming out at around 1 AM.”My heart sank. “Leo, please tell me you didn’t do anything s

Calla's POVThis was it. The moment when I had to decide whether to play it safe or take the leap I had come here for.“From things you probably don’t want to understand,” I said quietly. “Councilwoman, this city has many hidden layers. There are systems at work that traditional politics and law enforcement can’t really deal with. The groups you’re trying to break down serve important roles that go beyond what’s obvious. If you push ahead with your renewal plan without really understanding what you’re disrupting, you could end up creating problems that make today’s crime issues look small in comparison.”Cassandra put her fork down, her complete focus now on me. “That sounds a lot like a threat, Ms. Reyes.”“It’s a warning,” I clarified. “Not just from me, but from someone who genuinely understands the complex situation you’re trying to change. You’

Calla’s POVThe restaurant Cassandra picked for our meeting was just what I expected—upscale but not overly flashy, busy enough to feel safe but quiet enough for private talks. The tables were covered with white cloths, the lighting was soft, and the prices made me wince a little, considering my new law practice was on a tight budget.I got there fifteen minutes early, a habit instilled in me by my former boss Patricia during my early career. She always said to take control of the situation before the other person arrives. Choose your seat wisely and never let them see you stressed or in a hurry.Cassandra arrived right on time, which I admired despite myself. She was wearing a new designer suit—navy this time instead of charcoal—and greeted me with a friendly, professional smile as she approached the table.“Ms. Reyes,” she said, extending her hand. “Thanks for meeting with me. I figured a more relaxed setting might help us talk better than shouting at each other in a council meeting

Calla's POVThe weight of the situation hit me hard. Cassandra wasn’t a supernatural threat that could be handled through pack strength or Tribunal intervention. She was a human one, which made her even more challenging to confront because everything she did was legal and could be defended publicly. This meant that fighting back against her would be tough and could expose secrets we wanted to keep hidden.“Thanks for the heads-up,” I said, feeling genuine gratitude.“Don’t thank me yet,” Richard replied. “If you manage to stop her, then you can thank me. For now, just keep your eyes open and document everything. She’s good at making problems go away, but she’s not perfect. Everyone slips up at some point.”Once he left, I grabbed my things with a lot more concern than I had when I arrived. When I got back to the clubhouse, Kane was pacing back and forth, which meant he either sensed my tension or someone had already filled him in on the council meeting.“She’s coming after us,” he sai
