Chapter 2

Author: Rusty Lane
The next day, the Silva family held a banquet to officially welcome me home.

Before the banquet began, Talia saw the words ‘Welcome Home, Bianca!’ displayed on the main screen and tears immediately began rolling down her cheeks.

Ten minutes later, my name was removed. In its place were the words ‘Happy Eighteenth Birthday, Talia!’

Victoria took me aside to explain.

“We can always hold another banquet to welcome you home. Talia only turns eighteen once. I hope you can be understanding toward your younger sister.”

I was perfectly understanding. As long as Talia maintained her position in the family and was not kicked out, she could continue plotting my death without a care in the world.

It was all about protecting a key member of the team. I voiced my approval on the spot.

Victoria seemed to let out a sigh of relief. As she straightened my dress, her fingers brushed against the luck charm around my neck. Suddenly, her eyes reddened.

“I put this around your neck with my own hands when you were born. Thank goodness you still have it.”

I lowered my head to look at it. So this thing was a custom-made luxury heirloom, huh.

I wondered if I could sell it on a secondhand marketplace and get myself a decent coffin in exchange.

Once the banquet began, my father, Matheus Silva, announced my return to the family in front of all the guests.

He had not even finished speaking when Talia suddenly clutched her chest and collapsed.

The entire Silva family immediately descended into chaos.

James rushed to catch her. Byron checked her breathing while Harriet snatched the microphone from the host and announced to every guest in attendance,

“Blood relation or not, Talia will always be the Silva family’s one and only little princess!”

A round of applause swept through the room.

Meanwhile, I stood alone onstage. I felt like a last-minute performer hired to fake my own resurrection at the birthday girl’s party.

A lawyer was summoned in no time. The shares, investment funds and jewelry that had originally been intended for me remained exactly where they were, all under Talia’s name.

James then handed me a declaration waiving my inheritance rights.

“Sign it. Talia has a heart condition. She can’t handle any more stress.”

I signed my name without hesitation.

James was startled for a moment. “Aren’t you going to ask how much you’re giving up?”

“No.”

Wealth was nothing more than a worldly possession. Besides, no bank would be willing to let me open an account anyway once I was dead.

When Talia regained consciousness and saw my signature, she looked even more uneasy.

“Bianca, you really aren’t angry?”

I was only concerned about one other thing. “Does this mean we can eat the cake now?”

I had been starving since morning just for the sake of getting reincarnated. Denying someone their last meal was downright inhumane.

I had just picked up a plate of cake when Talia suddenly grabbed my wrist. Her foot slipped and her entire body lurched backward over the terrace railing.

My eyes lit up. I followed her right over the edge.

Splash! Splash!

We both plunged into the infinity pool below.

The moment I hit the water, I closed my eyes and sank peacefully toward the bottom.

I had failed at drowning myself plenty of times before, but every failure was just another step toward success.

If I kept trying, sooner or later, one of those attempts would finally do the trick.

Three splashes could be heard from above. One after another, my three older brothers jumped into the pool and swam straight past me.

Their target was clear. They were heading directly for Talia.

Lying at the bottom of the pool, I was so touched that I almost wanted to move aside and let them pass.

Wonderful! The entire family was biased and everyone was on the same page. At least no one was competing with me for a spot on the death roster.

Unfortunately, the hotel lifeguard lacked the refined sensibilities of a wealthy family. He dove straight down and hauled me to the surface.

I coughed up a mouthful of water and shot him a resentful look.

When did customer service become this aggressively competitive? Why did he have to interfere in someone else’s family business?

By then, the three brothers had already gathered around Talia.

Victoria took off her jacket and wrapped it around her, her eyes red with worry. “Talia is afraid of water. How could she have suddenly fallen in?”

Talia coughed delicately, looking as pitiful as ever. “Bianca said she was the Silva family’s real daughter. She told me to give her back to her brothers and her mother…”

Harriet whipped his head toward me. “You’re so desperate for affection that you’d even gamble with Talia’s life?”

I was just about to explain when a faint click came from the luck charm around my neck.

A hairline crack had appeared across its surface.

Then, a long-forgotten voice rang in my ear. “Vessel damaged. Reincarnation progress: 20%.”

I shot straight upright. So it was not that I had not been trying hard enough to die. I had simply been targeting the wrong weak spot.

I gripped the charm and grinned so hard I could barely contain myself. Unfortunately, everyone else thought I was gloating over my successful attempt to frame Talia.

James’ gaze turned utterly icy. “From this day forward, she is forbidden from going anywhere near Talia.”

I nodded repeatedly.

That would not be a problem. Once I figured out how to destroy this charm, we would be separated by life and death. They would not have to worry about keeping me away from her ever again.

Before I could be reincarnated, Grim Reaper Fern had me choose a basic package for my next life.He laid three forms on the table.‘Wealthy Family: Fierce competition. Eighty-year waiting list.’‘Genius Life: High risk of premature balding. Significant psychological stress.’‘Ordinary Family: Random assignment. Results in five minutes.’I chose the third option without hesitation. After three hundred years as a zombie, I learned one thing — the most important things in life were not money or intelligence. It was good health and a healthy appetite.Grim Reaper Fern asked if I had any special requirements.“I do. My heart has to beat. My tongue has to be able to taste food and I don’t want to sleep in a coffin.”He checked off each item on the form.“Anything else?”I pondered for a moment.“Preferably, my new family shouldn’t have the family name Silva.”His pen paused for a second. “I can guarantee that.”Once my application was submitted, everything went black. When I

My ashes were never brought back to the Silva family.Victoria wanted to bury me in the Silva family cemetery, but James found a list of my final wishes in the notes app on my phone. There were only three things listed.‘First, scatter my ashes wherever. Don’t take up the cemetery space. Paying a mortgage while dead is a terrible investment.’‘Second, don’t waste your money burning fake cash for me. Once I’m reincarnated, there’s no guarantee I’ll recognize that currency.’‘Third, I’d love to have a burger with extra cheese, and some fries. You can set it in front of my grave, but preferably eat it right away. Don’t waste food.’The Silva family spent the entire day arguing over it. In the end, Matheus bought a plot of land overlooking the river, while Harriet took charge of ordering the burger. When the delivery driver arrived at the cemetery, he looked thoroughly confused.“Who ordered the deluxe cheeseburger with fries?”I was immediately offended. Why would anyone order a

The Silva family stubbornly refused to have my body cremated.James searched far and wide, consulting experts at home and abroad in an attempt to repair my burned cells.Meanwhile, Byron locked himself in the lab, studying my blood samples day and night without sleep. He was convinced that if he could uncover the secret behind my regenerative abilities, I could still wake up.I floated in twice a day to check on things. Once to make sure he had not made any breakthroughs, and once to make sure my corpse had not suddenly sat up.Life was wonderfully fulfilling. On the third day, Byron finally collapsed in front of his lab bench. When a nurse helped him up, he was still clutching the consent form I signed for the blood collection. My signature was huge and terribly messy. It was as though I was afraid they would change their minds at the last minute. He stared at those two characters before suddenly asking the nurse, “Why was she so happy that day?”The nurse hesitated for a mome

The Grim Reaper’s family name was Fern.He explained that the reincarnation system needed seven days to clear the corrupted data because I had overstayed my time in the mortal world.During those seven days, I was free to go wherever I pleased. My first request was to visit a burger restaurant.Fern rejected it outright. “Ghosts can’t eat.”I refused to give up.“What about just smelling the food?”“Smell it too much and you’ll develop an attachment to the mortal world. Keep that up and you’ll turn into a vengeful spirit.”After some thought, I decided to stay at the Silva residence and watch the drama unfold. After all, they were crying louder with every passing minute. It was more entertaining than any TV show. The police soon took Talia into custody. She clung to Victoria’s legs, refusing to let go.“Mom, I’m the daughter you’ve raised for eighteen years. I didn’t know Bianca would actually die. She did it on purpose! She knew that lock would kill her. Why didn’t she tell

The moment Talia finished speaking, silence fell over the morgue.James slowly turned his head toward her. “What do you mean you burned her lock?”Talia’s face went white. “I-I just wanted to scare Bianca. She lured me to the warehouse and tried to burn me alive.”It was obvious that she had rehearsed that story in advance. Unfortunately, she had already given herself away in the opening line.Harriet pulled out his phone. “You returned to the banquet hall at 9:07pm last night. The warehouse caught fire at 9:12pm. How did the fire burn you when you were not present?”One could always count on an actor to notice the details. Whatever else he might be bad at, Harriet had a keen eye for timelines.Talia shook her head, tears streaming down her face. “I don’t know. Bianca was the one who asked me to meet her. She’s always wanted to take you all away from me. I was scared of her, so I took her luck charm.”James asked no further questions. Instead, he had his assistant pull the sur

When the countdown reached three, James finally broke down the warehouse door.He charged into the flames, kicked the fallen beam out of the way and dragged my charred body from the rubble.Unfortunately, he was still too late. My soul had already floated up to the warehouse ceiling. In the first minute of being separated from my body, I took a moment to check my limbs. My arms and legs were still there, and my head had not sprung a leak from being dropped one too many times either. The after-death service was more thorough than I expected.James knelt on the ground, frantically slapping my face. “Bianca, wake up. Quit pretending. I’m here to take you home.”I floated over beside him and kindly offered a word of advice. “Stop slapping me. Any harder and I’ll start shedding pieces.”He could not hear me. Instead, he pulled me even tighter against his chest. The charred flesh of my body stuck to his shirt, but he seemed not to notice. The ambulance finally arrived, far too late.
