Chapter 3

Author: Rusty Lane
I was fine after falling into the pool. Talia, however, ended up in the hospital that very night.

According to the doctors, she had a congenital blood disorder that had suddenly worsened. She needed a hematopoietic stem cell transplant as soon as possible.

As luck would have it, I was the only person in the entire family who was a match.

The Silva family gathered around my hospital bed, each wearing an expression more solemn than the last.

Matheus appealed to the bonds of blood. Victoria reminded me of the eighteen years she had spent raising Talia. My three older brothers took turns reminding me that Talia had been there for them for eighteen years.

After listening to all of them, I arrived at one simple conclusion. She had taken my place. Therefore, I owed her half a life.

No wonder the wealthy played by different rules. Even their accounting was more extravagant than everyone else’s.

Byron handed me the consent form. “We’re only taking a portion. It won’t put your life at risk.”

He was the second son of the Silva family and the director of this private hospital. He certainly had plenty of authority. As for his medical ethics, that remained to be seen.

I flipped open the consent form just as the Grim Reaper’s voice rang in my head.

“Significant blood loss may accelerate the deterioration of your host vessel.”

It might cause death? How was that any different from a guaranteed death sentence?

I signed on the spot. My pen nearly set the paper on fire.

Victoria clasped my hand with reddened eyes. “Bianca, thank you for being willing to save your sister.”

“Don’t mention it.”

‘Take as much as you need. Really, don’t treat me like an outsider.’

Halfway through the procedure, the doctors noticed that my body temperature was steadily dropping.

“Dr. Silva, something’s wrong with her condition. We need to stop.”

I immediately opened my eyes. “Don’t stop.”

The doctor froze for a moment.

However, Byron watched me through the glass for a moment before speaking. “Talia needs a large amount for this transplant.”

“She fell from the twenty-eighth floor and was perfectly fine. Her ability to recover is better than an ordinary person’s. Continue.”

I was this close to weeping with gratitude. After all these days in the Silva family, Byron and I had finally reached a consensus.

The doctor continued extracting stem cells for another half hour. The cracks on my charm continued to spread.

“Reincarnation progress: 45%.”

My fingers trembled with excitement. I was almost there, two more tubes were all it took.

I was determined to finally get this whole reincarnation business taken care of today.

However, Byron suddenly called a halt. “That’s enough.”

I turned to look at him. “How is that enough?”

The worst thing one could do was quit halfway through.

He frowned. “Do you really have to make yourself look more considerate than Talia at a time like this?”

I closed my eyes, unwilling to speak. Our sibling bond had officially come to an end.

After the procedure, I was transferred to an observation room. Having received my stem cells, Talia looked noticeably healthier.

She waited until no one was around, then wheeled herself over to my bed.

“Do you think saving me will make our brothers think you’re a good person?”

I shook my head. I just thought this hospital had some impressive equipment.

It even had a real-time display of my progress toward death. I had an excellent user experience.

When Talia saw that I was not responding, she simply pulled out my IV line and wheeled me into the underground cell storage facility.

The cold room door locked behind me. A blast of minus-thirty-degree air quickly enveloped my body.

Through the glass, she stared at me coldly. “Stay in there and think about what you’ve done.”

I nearly threw myself at her and kissed her. As expected of the person I had chosen for the job.

Byron handled the bloodletting while she handled the freezing. With teamwork like theirs, everything ran smoothly.

I found an empty storage chamber, climbed inside, and even lowered the temperature by another five degrees myself.

“Reincarnation progress: 60%.

“70%.”

Just as the progress bar hit seventy-nine percent, the cold room door suddenly swung open.

The Silva family stormed in with their bodyguards.

Talia immediately clutched her chest and collapsed into James’s arms.

“I came to look for Bianca, but the door suddenly locked. I was so scared…”

James scooped her up and carried her out, Byron checked her for signs of frostbite and Harriet hurried to call a doctor.

It was not until they were long gone that someone finally remembered there was still another person in the cold room.

By the time the bodyguards carried me out, I was staring at my frozen progress bar, so furious I could practically feel my corpse spots surfacing.

When I actually needed saving, no one came, yet when I did not need saving, they arrived faster than ever.

Having biological older brothers really did nothing but slow down my reincarnation.

Before I could be reincarnated, Grim Reaper Fern had me choose a basic package for my next life.He laid three forms on the table.‘Wealthy Family: Fierce competition. Eighty-year waiting list.’‘Genius Life: High risk of premature balding. Significant psychological stress.’‘Ordinary Family: Random assignment. Results in five minutes.’I chose the third option without hesitation. After three hundred years as a zombie, I learned one thing — the most important things in life were not money or intelligence. It was good health and a healthy appetite.Grim Reaper Fern asked if I had any special requirements.“I do. My heart has to beat. My tongue has to be able to taste food and I don’t want to sleep in a coffin.”He checked off each item on the form.“Anything else?”I pondered for a moment.“Preferably, my new family shouldn’t have the family name Silva.”His pen paused for a second. “I can guarantee that.”Once my application was submitted, everything went black. When I

My ashes were never brought back to the Silva family.Victoria wanted to bury me in the Silva family cemetery, but James found a list of my final wishes in the notes app on my phone. There were only three things listed.‘First, scatter my ashes wherever. Don’t take up the cemetery space. Paying a mortgage while dead is a terrible investment.’‘Second, don’t waste your money burning fake cash for me. Once I’m reincarnated, there’s no guarantee I’ll recognize that currency.’‘Third, I’d love to have a burger with extra cheese, and some fries. You can set it in front of my grave, but preferably eat it right away. Don’t waste food.’The Silva family spent the entire day arguing over it. In the end, Matheus bought a plot of land overlooking the river, while Harriet took charge of ordering the burger. When the delivery driver arrived at the cemetery, he looked thoroughly confused.“Who ordered the deluxe cheeseburger with fries?”I was immediately offended. Why would anyone order a

The Silva family stubbornly refused to have my body cremated.James searched far and wide, consulting experts at home and abroad in an attempt to repair my burned cells.Meanwhile, Byron locked himself in the lab, studying my blood samples day and night without sleep. He was convinced that if he could uncover the secret behind my regenerative abilities, I could still wake up.I floated in twice a day to check on things. Once to make sure he had not made any breakthroughs, and once to make sure my corpse had not suddenly sat up.Life was wonderfully fulfilling. On the third day, Byron finally collapsed in front of his lab bench. When a nurse helped him up, he was still clutching the consent form I signed for the blood collection. My signature was huge and terribly messy. It was as though I was afraid they would change their minds at the last minute. He stared at those two characters before suddenly asking the nurse, “Why was she so happy that day?”The nurse hesitated for a mome

The Grim Reaper’s family name was Fern.He explained that the reincarnation system needed seven days to clear the corrupted data because I had overstayed my time in the mortal world.During those seven days, I was free to go wherever I pleased. My first request was to visit a burger restaurant.Fern rejected it outright. “Ghosts can’t eat.”I refused to give up.“What about just smelling the food?”“Smell it too much and you’ll develop an attachment to the mortal world. Keep that up and you’ll turn into a vengeful spirit.”After some thought, I decided to stay at the Silva residence and watch the drama unfold. After all, they were crying louder with every passing minute. It was more entertaining than any TV show. The police soon took Talia into custody. She clung to Victoria’s legs, refusing to let go.“Mom, I’m the daughter you’ve raised for eighteen years. I didn’t know Bianca would actually die. She did it on purpose! She knew that lock would kill her. Why didn’t she tell

The moment Talia finished speaking, silence fell over the morgue.James slowly turned his head toward her. “What do you mean you burned her lock?”Talia’s face went white. “I-I just wanted to scare Bianca. She lured me to the warehouse and tried to burn me alive.”It was obvious that she had rehearsed that story in advance. Unfortunately, she had already given herself away in the opening line.Harriet pulled out his phone. “You returned to the banquet hall at 9:07pm last night. The warehouse caught fire at 9:12pm. How did the fire burn you when you were not present?”One could always count on an actor to notice the details. Whatever else he might be bad at, Harriet had a keen eye for timelines.Talia shook her head, tears streaming down her face. “I don’t know. Bianca was the one who asked me to meet her. She’s always wanted to take you all away from me. I was scared of her, so I took her luck charm.”James asked no further questions. Instead, he had his assistant pull the sur

When the countdown reached three, James finally broke down the warehouse door.He charged into the flames, kicked the fallen beam out of the way and dragged my charred body from the rubble.Unfortunately, he was still too late. My soul had already floated up to the warehouse ceiling. In the first minute of being separated from my body, I took a moment to check my limbs. My arms and legs were still there, and my head had not sprung a leak from being dropped one too many times either. The after-death service was more thorough than I expected.James knelt on the ground, frantically slapping my face. “Bianca, wake up. Quit pretending. I’m here to take you home.”I floated over beside him and kindly offered a word of advice. “Stop slapping me. Any harder and I’ll start shedding pieces.”He could not hear me. Instead, he pulled me even tighter against his chest. The charred flesh of my body stuck to his shirt, but he seemed not to notice. The ambulance finally arrived, far too late.
