Vittoria’s lips parted and closed repeatedly, her gaze drifting into nothingness, far removed from any sense of reality.

“No… that’s not possible,” Vittoria whispered, her eyes fixed on Vincenzo even though she could no longer truly see him through the fog of her despair.

She shook her head violently, as if trying to expel his words, but the truth crushed her with merciless force in the most painful way imaginable.

“No, no,” she murmured, before her voice broke into sobs that tore at her throat. “That can’t be true, it’s a lie—tell me it’s a lie!” she pleaded, her voice fracturing with every syllable, her tear-filled eyes refusing to accept the reality closing in on her. “It was an accident. A damn accident,” she added, clinging to the lie as if it were her last breath, because that version was far less cruel than the truth he had just handed her.

Her breathing began to fail rapidly as Vittoria’s crying intensified.

Her face turned pale, draining of color by the second, as though the

Vittoria felt Vincenzo squeeze her tighter, as if searching for the last thread that could keep him standing. Then Vittoria felt warm moisture spread across her shoulder, and her heart contracted even tighter, as if that pain was flowing from him into her.The fragile sound of a sob escaped his lips, as low as it was devastating, revealing the fragility of a man who had always been strong but who was now falling apart against her shoulder.Vittoria closed her eyes, unable to hold back her tears as they slid hotly down her face, while she felt his body crumble in her arms, each sob tearing pieces from her heart, as if they shared the same unbearable pain.“I'm sorry,” Vittoria repeated, her voice breaking, as if all the words in the world were too small in the face of the pain he was letting out against her shoulder.“I failed her,” Vincenzo vented, his voice choked, barely able to get through his restrained crying.“No, don't say that,” Vittoria murmured, her voice fragile, as tears s

  • The Lord Of Chaos: A Forced Marriage   177 – The cruel reality

Vincenzo's heart beat unevenly, and he pressed the back of his hand against the mask, feeling the damp fabric of his breath as his chest burned under an unbearable weight. His teary eyes remained fixed on the small body, while his heart slowly broke, unable to bear the cruel and painful reality that lay before him. With trembling hands, Vincenzo removed the mask, revealing a tense face, contorted by the effort not to break down completely. His red eyes, burning from restrained crying, glistened under the cold light of the ICU, while his breathing was heavy and irregular, as if each breath was a lost battle.“I'm sorry, princess,” Vincenzo whispered, his voice breaking, each syllable coming out heavy, as if it were taking his breath away. “I failed you. I promised to protect you, and yet I let you go.”His fingers gently brushed the girl's pale skin, as if searching for warmth that wasn't there, trying to convince himself that her absence wasn't real.“You are my little star,” he conti

Vincenzo's heart beat wildly, and without wasting any time, he strode through the corridors, each sound echoing like a countdown. As soon as he entered the pediatric ICU, Vincenzo went into the changing room, carelessly ripped off his sling, sanitized his hands, and put on a sterile gown, mask, and gloves. Each movement was quick and precise, almost automatic, but at that moment, his technique could not hide his fear of what he was about to encounter.Guided only by instinct, Vincenzo pushed open the ICU door, and the environment hit him brutally: the incessant beeping of the monitors filled the air, the medical team crowded around Lily's small body, and Edward's tense gaze met his for a moment before returning, unshaken, to the fight for the child's life. The air in the ICU seemed to compress around Vincenzo as he took a few steps forward, the mask making his breathing even heavier.Lily's fragile body moved almost imperceptibly under the wires and tubes, her chest rising with mechan

Vittoria closed her eyes for a moment, allowing the weight of those words to settle in her chest. Her connection to Lily might not have been as long or as deep as Vincenzo's, but just looking at him was enough to feel the gravity of that pain as if it were her own.“She'll be fine,” Vittoria said, her voice choked with hope, clinging to it as the only possible truth, unable to accept any other outcome.Vincenzo took a deep breath against her neck, and the tightness around her waist revealed how much he was clinging to the hope conveyed by her words.“Shall we go?” Vincenzo asked, breaking contact, even though deep down he wanted to remain in the warmth of her arms.Vittoria nodded slowly, letting her eyes linger on his face for a moment, and there she saw the same sadness and vulnerability she had witnessed when they had lost their baby. This realization made even clearer what she had sensed from the first moment she saw Vincenzo with Lily: that child was much more than a patient; she

Bianca shook her head, incredulous at Vittoria's daring plans, not knowing whether to admire her courage or fear her obvious recklessness.“Vittoria—”“I know, it's crazy,” Vittoria admitted, letting out a long sigh that seemed to carry the weight of the world. “But I need to at least dream of a little normality.” She continued, her voice thick with fatigue. “These last few days have been so hard that I feel like every morning another burden falls on me.”Before Vittoria could continue or Bianca could ask any questions, the door suddenly opened, immediately catching both their eyes.Vincenzo flashed a restrained smile, a skillful disguise to hide all the worries weighing on him inside.“Good morning, Bianca,” Vincenzo greeted her with the usual politeness he reserved for people he wasn't so close to.“Good morning, Mr. Lucchese,” Bianca replied, maintaining a formality that created distance, even in the face of his politeness. He approached Vittoria and pressed his lips to her forehea

Vincenzo's heart raced wildly, as if it already sensed the gravity of what was to come.He opened his mouth to ask a question, but the sound refused to come out, stuck in his throat as if his body was preventing him from hearing the truth.“She's gotten worse,” Edward continued, his voice controlled. “It started with a fever and cough, which quickly developed into pneumonia. Her body did not respond to antibiotic treatment, and now her condition is considered critical.”Vincenzo closed his eyes, a sharp pain piercing his chest as the realization of the gravity of the situation hit him with the crushing weight of an unbearable reality.“Her body is in multiple organ failure,” Edward informed him, keeping his voice steady. “We are using all available resources to stabilize her, but at this stage it is a race against time.”“I'm on my way,” Vincenzo murmured, his voice low, as if that was all he could say.He ended the call and rested his hand on the table, seeking the balance that his b
