Shadows and whispers

The morning sunlight seeped through the small, cracked window, casting a gentle glow over the modest room. Seraphina sat beside the bed, her fingers carefully adjusting the new bandage around the man's temple.

Her eyes lingered on his battered face, the bruises dark against his skin, the faint swellings a stark contrast to the calm she desperately tried to maintain.

She had stayed awake most of the night, tending to his wounds, listening to his shallow breaths, and feeling the quiet weight of his presence. Despite her exhaustion, the image of his unseeing eye haunted her—an unknowing gaze that seemed to pierce her soul. She wondered about him—what he looked like, what stories he carried within.

Her fingers brushed lightly over his brow, smoothing the damp hair away from his forehead. “You’re safe now,” she whispered softly, her voice thick with emotion. “I won’t let anything happen to you.”

He stirred slightly, a faint twitch of his fingers, and then, unexpectedly, his eyelid fluttered open. His eye was clouded and unfocused, yet somehow, she sensed that he was aware—more aware than his dull gaze suggested. His lips parted, a faint sound escaping, but no words formed.

Her heart clenched. She leaned closer, her breath catching. “Can you hear me?” she asked, voice trembling.

He made another faint movement, a silent response. His hand, rough and calloused from hard labor or battle, reached out and grasped her trembling hand. The contact was fragile, yet it felt like an unspoken promise—an anchor amid the chaos.

Seraphina’s mind spun with questions—who was he? Why was he alone and hurt? How had he come to be in this state? She longed to know his story, to understand what had brought him here, to her.

But more than anything, she felt an overwhelming urge to protect him. Her own past had taught her that life could change in an instant, that darkness could seep into even the brightest of days.

Now, as she looked into his unseeing eye, she realized how vulnerable he was—how much he needed her.

She gently brushed her fingers over his hand. “Stay with me,” she whispered. “You’re not alone anymore.”

Suddenly, she heard faint footsteps approaching outside the door—deliberate, cautious. Her heart thudded loudly in her chest. She quickly moved to the door, pressing her ear against the wood, trying to listen.

A muffled conversation outside—two voices, low and tense.

“Did you find her?” a gruff voice asked.

“No,” replied another, more hesitant. “But I saw someone enter the inn. I think she’s hiding here.”

Seraphina’s stomach tightened. Her mind raced. Could it be the guards? Someone sent to track her? Or worse, people who wanted to silence her forever? Her grip tightened on the doorknob as adrenaline surged through her veins.

She looked back at the injured man, still fragile, lying quietly. Her mind made a quick decision. She had to hide him. To protect him, and perhaps herself.

She moved swiftly, reaching for the shawl draped over a nearby chair. With gentle hands, she wrapped it around his shoulders, supporting his head as she helped him sit up. His face was pale, lips slightly parted, but his unseeing eye met hers with a faint, trusting gaze.

“Stay quiet,” she whispered urgently. “I’ll get us out of here.”

Quietly, she opened the door just enough to peek outside. Two shadowed figures paused just beyond, their voices low and tense.

“They could be looking for her,” one said.

“Keep your eyes open,” the other replied. “She’s probably hiding somewhere in this part of the city.”

Seraphina’s heart pounded. She knew she couldn’t risk being caught. Swallowing her fear, she slipped into the shadows, guiding the injured man behind her.

They moved quickly through the quiet streets—narrow alleyways, deserted markets, and overgrown courtyards. The city was waking up, but she sensed danger lurking in every shadow. Still, she pressed on, her mind focused on one thing: getting him to safety.

Finally, they reached a small inn on the outskirts of Eldoria, a place she had known from her past visits—a humble refuge with creaking wooden floors and a faint scent of lavender. The innkeeper, an older woman with kind eyes, looked up from her counter as Seraphina entered.

“I found someone injured outside,” Seraphina explained breathlessly. “He’s hurt and blind. Please, help us.”

The innkeeper’s eyes softened. Without hesitation, she hurried into the back and returned with bandages, water, and a warm cloth. Seraphina gently helped the man onto a simple cot in a tiny room, her hands steady despite her pounding heart.

As she cleaned his wounds, her thoughts spun. Who was he? Why had someone targeted him? And what secrets did he carry—secrets that might change everything?

The man remained silent, but his hand reached out again, seeking her. She clasped it softly, feeling a strange sense of calm. Despite his injuries, there was a quiet strength about him—an unspoken resilience that drew her in.

In that moment, her heart stirred with hope—a fragile, flickering hope that love and kindness could still be found amid the shadows. She didn’t know what future awaited her or him, but she knew she wouldn’t abandon this stranger.

Outside, the city stirred to life, but inside that small room, amid the scent of linen and medicine, something new was awakening—a delicate promise that even in darkness, light might still shine.

The grand hall of Lord Darion’s estate shimmered with opulence, every surface gleaming with gold and crystal. Yet amidst the splendor, a woman moved with quiet purpose, her presence both commanding and calculating. Lady Eveline de Vaux. Her crimson lips curved into a polished smile as she glided through the crowd, her emerald eyes sharp beneath their carefully veiled glint. Her gown—an extravagant silk creation—clung perfectly to her slender figure, pearls draped across her collarbone and wrists.
