I sat across from my mother on the balcony and waited for her to address me. I knew she would have a lot of questions, and I had questions of my own.

"What is going on with the rogues?" I asked. Patience was never one of my virtues.

"They have retreated."

"That's great," I sighed, digging into my pasta.

"For now," she subtly added. "They'll most likely be back."

"I'm sure. Especially since Darren's daughter is dead."

My mother's eyes widened in surprise.

"What do you mean Darren's daughter is dead?"

I spent the next twenty minutes explaining to my mother what happened with Maddie.

"This isn't good. Darren will be back with a vengeance. He's a sick bastard, that one."

"So I've heard. I'm still shocked that the Council let him roam free with all the bullshit he did. They should've had a mass hunt for him or offered bounties on his head. Why didn't they arrest him?"
