The morning air in Moonridge territory was cool and quiet, but Ariana Vale could already feel the tension beneath it.

She knelt beside an injured wolf near the edge of the clearing, her hands glowing faintly as she

worked. Soft green light flowed from her palms into the deep wound on his side. Slowly, the torn

flesh began to close.

“Easy… you’ll be fine,” she said gently.

The young wolf winced but nodded. “Thank you, Ariana. It doesn’t hurt as much now.”

She gave him a small smile. “You’ll need to rest for a few days. No running, no fighting.”

He laughed weakly. “I’ll try.”

Ariana stood and brushed the dirt from her dress. Around her, the pack was waking up. Wolves

moved between cabins, some carrying supplies, others heading out toward the forest. It looked

like a normal day.

But it didn’t feel normal.

It hadn’t felt normal for a long time.

“Ariana.”

She turned at the sound of her name.

Marcus Thorn stood a few steps away, his tall figure

casting a long shadow across the ground. As Alpha, he always carried a strong presence.

People respected him. Feared him.

Once, she had loved that strength.

Now… it felt distant.

“You’re needed at the council later,” he said, his voice calm but cold.

Ariana nodded. “Of course. I’ll be there.”

Marcus didn’t move closer. He didn’t ask about her work. He didn’t look at her the way he used to

Instead, his gaze shifted past her, already distracted.

“I’ll send someone to take over here,” he added.

“I can finish—”

“It’s not necessary.”

The words cut her off sharply.

Ariana lowered her eyes. “Alright.”

There was a short silence between them. It felt heavy, like something unspoken was pressing

down on both of them.

She wanted to say something.

Ask him why he had been avoiding her.

Ask him why he no longer touches her or smiles at her.

Ask him if she had done something wrong.

But the words stayed stuck in her throat.

Marcus gave a brief nod and turned away, already walking back toward the center of the pack.

Ariana watched him go, her chest tightening.

It wasn’t always like this.

There was a time when Marcus would stay beside her while she worked. He would listen to her

speak, even laugh softly at her quiet jokes. He used to call her his future Luna with pride.

Now, it felt like she was invisible.

“Ariana?”

She blinked and turned back to the injured wolf. He was watching her with concern.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

She forced a smile. “I’m fine.”

But even she didn’t believe it.

***

Later that day, Ariana made her way toward the council hall. The large wooden building stood at

the center of the territory, surrounded by tall trees that blocked most of the sunlight. It always

felt a little darker there.

As she approached, she noticed a group of wolves standing nearby, speaking in low voices.

They went quiet when they saw her.

Ariana slowed her steps.

“…she’s kind, but that’s not enough,” one of them muttered.

“A Luna needs strength,” another said softly.

“She’s too soft.”

Ariana kept walking, pretending she hadn’t heard them.

But every word sank deep.

She pushed open the door and stepped inside. The room was already filling with pack

members. Marcus stood at the front, speaking with a few elders.

He didn’t look at her.

Ariana moved to the side, taking her usual place. She folded her hands together, trying to stay

calm.

This was her place.

This was her pack.

She belonged here.

Didn’t she?

The meeting began soon after. Discussions about territory borders, hunting routes, and recent

tensions with rival packs filled the room. Ariana listened carefully, as she always did.

She wanted to help.

She wanted to be useful.

At one point, she stepped forward slightly. “I think we should send healers with the patrol teams.

There have been more injuries lately, and—”

“That won’t be necessary,” Marcus interrupted without looking at her.

The room fell silent.

Ariana froze.

“I… I only meant—”

“I’ve already made a decision,” he said firmly.

Her voice faded.

A few wolves exchanged glances. Some looked uncomfortable. Others… looked like they

agreed with him.

Ariana slowly stepped back.

The rest of the meeting passed in a blur.

When it ended, wolves began to leave in small groups. Conversations picked up again, but

Ariana felt like she was standing outside of it all.

She turned to leave quietly.

But something caught her attention.

Marcus was still inside, speaking with someone.

A woman.

Ariana paused near the doorway, her heart beating faster.

Selene.

She recognised her immediately. Selene stood tall, her long dark hair falling over her shoulders.

She was beautiful, confident, and strong. A skilled warrior.

Everything a Luna should be.

Ariana stayed where she was, hidden just enough not to be noticed.

She didn’t mean to listen.

But she couldn’t walk away.

“You handled that well,” Selene said, her voice smooth.

Marcus gave a small nod. “It needed to be done.”

“And Ariana?”

There was a short pause.

Ariana held her breath.

“She’ll understand,” Marcus said.

His tone was distant. Uncertain.

Ariana’s chest tightened.

Selene stepped closer to him. “You can’t keep avoiding it forever.”

“I know.”

“Then when?”

Another silence.

Ariana felt the ground beneath her shift.

Marcus ran a hand through his hair, his expression tense. “Soon.”

Selene smiled slightly. “Good. The pack needs clarity.”

The pack.

Not Ariana.

Ariana’s fingers curled into her palms.

She stepped back quietly, her heart pounding. She didn’t want to hear any more.

Didn’t want to understand what this meant.

But deep down… she already did.

***

The sun was beginning to set when Ariana returned to her small cabin.

She closed the door behind her and leaned against it, letting out a slow breath.

The room felt too quiet.

Too empty.

She walked to the small table near the window and sat down. Her hands rested in her lap, still

trembling slightly.

“Soon.”

Marcus’s voice echoed in her mind.

Soon, he had said.

Soon what?

Soon, he would explain?

Soon, he would fix things?

Or…

Soon, he would end everything?

Ariana shook her head, trying to push the thoughts away.

No.

She was overthinking.

Things had been difficult, yes. But that didn’t mean everything was falling apart.

Marcus was under pressure as Alpha. The pack was dealing with threats. It made sense that he

was distant.

It didn’t mean he didn’t care.

It didn’t mean he didn’t still choose her.

Right?

Ariana stood and walked to the window. The sky outside was painted in soft shades of orange

and purple. The forest stretched endlessly beyond the territory.

Beautiful.

Quiet.

Uncertain.

She placed her hand against the glass.

“I just need to be patient,” she whispered to herself.

Everything would be fine.

It had to be.

Because if it wasn’t…

She didn’t know who she would be without this life.

Without him.

***

Later that night, as darkness settled over Moonridge, Ariana lay awake in bed, staring at the

ceiling.

Sleep wouldn’t come.

Her mind kept replaying the same moments.

Marcus’s cold voice.

The whispers.

Selene’s smile.

Something was changing.

Something she couldn’t stop.

And for the first time…

Ariana felt afraid.

Not of the forest.

Not enemies.

But of the truth she was trying

so hard to ignore.

The next day would bring answers.

Whether she was ready or not.

And deep in her heart, a quiet voice whispered:

Nothing would ever be the same again.
