THE NIGHT SHE LEFT

The forest was quiet.

Too quiet.

Ariana walked without stopping, her steps slow but steady as she moved deeper into the

darkness. The sounds of the pack gathering had long faded behind her, swallowed by the thick

trees and heavy air.

She didn’t look back.

Not once.

If she did… she knew she might not have the strength to keep going.

The moonlight filtered through the branches above, casting pale shadows along the ground.

Every step she took felt unreal, like she was walking through a dream she couldn’t wake from.

Or maybe… a nightmare.

Her chest still hurt.

Not from running.

Not from fear.

But from everything that had just happened.

Marcus’s voice echoed in her mind.

“Know your place.”

Ariana swallowed hard, her throat tight.

“That place was never beside you,” she whispered softly.

Her voice sounded different now.

Quieter.

Colder.

She wrapped her arms around herself as a cold breeze passed through the trees. The deeper

she went, the darker it became. The familiar paths of Moonridge territory slowly disappeared

behind her.

Now, there were only shadows.

And silence.

***

After some time, Ariana slowed down.

Her legs began to ache, and her breathing grew uneven.

She stopped near a large fallen tree and leaned against it, closing her eyes briefly.

Everything felt heavy.

Her body.

Her thoughts.

Her heart.

She slid down slowly until she was sitting on the ground, her back resting against the rough

bark.

For a moment… she allowed herself to feel it.

The pain.

The betrayal.

The loss.

Tears filled her eyes, but this time, she didn’t stop them.

They slipped down her cheeks quietly.

“I wasn’t enough,” she whispered.

The words hurt more than anything else.

Not the rejection.

Not the humiliation.

But that feeling…

That she had failed.

That she had never been enough to stand beside him.

Ariana pressed her hands against her face, trying to steady her breathing.

“No,” she said softly after a moment.

Her voice shook.

But she said it again.

“No.”

She lowered her hands slowly.

Her eyes were still wet, but something had changed.

Something small.

Something fragile.

But real.

“I did everything I could,” she said.

Her voice grew a little stronger.

“I gave everything.”

She took a shaky breath.

“And that still wasn’t enough for them…”

A pause.

Then,

“Then maybe they were never meant for me.”

The words settled in the quiet around her.

Ariana stared ahead, her thoughts slowly shifting.

For so long, her world had been built around the pack.

Around Marcus.

Around the future she believed in.

But now…

That world was gone.

Completely.

And for the first time,

She had nothing holding her there.

No role.

No place.

No one.

The realisation was terrifying.

But also…

strangely freeing.

Ariana wiped her face and pushed herself to stand.

She couldn’t stay here.

Not in the middle of the forest.

Not with danger so close.

Rogue wolves sometimes wandered near the borders. Staying still for too long wasn’t safe.

She needed to keep moving.

But where would she go?

That question stopped her for a moment.

She had never thought about leaving Moonridge.

Not truly.

It had always been her home.

Her future.

Her everything.

Now…

It was nothing.

Ariana looked around, her gaze scanning the dark forest.

Then, slowly…

a memory surfaced.

A voice.

Calm.

Strong.

“If you ever need a place… come to Shadowfang.”

Her breath caught slightly.

Kael.

The Alpha of the Shadowfang Pack.

She had met him once, long ago, during a tense meeting between the packs. While others

spoke with hostility, Kael had been different.

Quiet.

Observant.

And strangely… respectful.

He had spoken to her directly.

Not as a healer.

Not as someone weak.

But as someone who mattered.

At the time, she hadn’t thought much of it.

But now…

Now it felt important.

Ariana hesitated.

Shadowfang was not just any pack.

They were rivals.

Stronger.

More dangerous.

Many in Moonridge feared them.

Going there alone,

as an outsider,

was a risk.

A big one.

She could be turned away.

Or worse.

Ariana’s fingers curled at her sides.

But what choice did she have?

Going back was not an option.

Not after tonight.

Not after everything.

She closed her eyes for a moment.

Then opened them again.

Clear.

Focused.

“I’m not going back,” she said firmly.

The words felt final.

Real.

Like a line she could never cross again.

Her gaze shifted deeper into the forest.

Toward Shadowfang territory.

It was far.

And the path was dangerous.

But it was something.

A direction.

A future… even if she couldn’t see it clearly yet.

Ariana took a step forward.

Then another.

Her pace slowly grew steadier.

Stronger.

Each step carried her further away from the life she lost,

and closer to something new.

***

Hours passed.

The forest grew colder as the night deepened.

Strange sounds echoed in the distance: branches snapping, distant howls, and the rustling of

unseen creatures.

Ariana stayed alert.

Her senses are sharp.

She wasn’t a fighter.

But she wasn’t helpless either.

She moved carefully, avoiding open spaces and sticking close to the trees.

Still…

a feeling crept over her.

Like she was being watched.

Ariana slowed.

Her heart began to beat faster.

The forest had gone quiet again.

Too quiet.

She turned slightly, scanning the darkness behind her.

“Hello?” she called softly.

No answer.

Just silence.

She took another step,

Then stopped.

A shadow moved between the trees.

Her breath caught.

“Ariana…”

The voice was low.

Rough.

Unfamiliar.

Fear shot through her instantly.

She stepped back.

“Who’s there?” she demanded, her voice unsteady but trying to sound firm.

The shadow moved again.

Closer.

Another figure appeared.

Then another.

Ariana’s heart pounded wildly.

Rogues.

She could tell immediately.

Their scent.

Their presence.

Wild.

Uncontrolled.

Dangerous.

“What’s a Moonridge wolf doing out here alone?” one of them said, a slow grin spreading across

his face.

Ariana forced herself to stand straight.

“I’m not looking for trouble,” she said.

The rogues laughed.

“That’s funny,” another one replied. “Because trouble just found you.”

Ariana’s mind raced.

She couldn’t outrun all of them.

She couldn’t fight them.

But she couldn’t freeze either.

“Let me pass,” she said, her voice firmer now. “I don’t belong to Moonridge anymore.”

That made them pause.

Just for a second.

“Is that so?” the first rogue said, stepping closer. “Then where do you belong?”

Ariana held his gaze.

Her fear was still there.

Strong.

But beneath it—

something else was rising.

“I’m still figuring that out,” she said.

The rogue’s grin widened.

“Well… maybe we can help you with that.”

They moved closer.

Closing in.

Ariana’s breath quickened.

Her hands trembled slightly at her sides.

But she didn’t step back.

Not this time.

If this were the end,

She wouldn’t face it weakly.

She wouldn’t face it begging.

The wind picked up suddenly, rustling the trees around them.

The moonlight shifted.

And for a brief moment,

something flickered inside her.

That same strange energy she had felt before.

Faint.

Uncontrolled.

But there.

The rogues hesitated slightly.

Sensing it.

Ariana felt it too.

Her heart skipped.

“What…?” she whispered.

The energy pulsed again,

Then vanished.

Just as quickly as it came.

The rogues exchanged glances.

Then smirked.

“Doesn’t matter,” one of them said. “She’s still alone.”

They stepped forward again.

Closer.

Closer.

Ariana’s pulse thundered in her ears.

This was it.

This was how it ended.

Or,

maybe not.

Because just as the first rogue reached for her,

A deep, powerful voice cut through the darkness.

“That’s far enough.”

Everything stopped.

The rogues froze.

Ariana’s breath caught.

Slowly,

very slowly,

She turned toward the sound.

From the shadows of the forest,

A figure stepped forward.

Tall.

Strong.

Commanding.

His presence filled the space instantly.

The air itself seemed to shift.

The rogues stepped back instinctively.

Fear flashed across their faces.

Ariana’s heart pounded as her eyes met his.

Sharp.

Piercing.

Unfamiliar.

And yet…

somehow—

not entirely.

The man’s gaze moved from the rogues to her.

Calm.

Assessing.

Dangerous.

“Leave,” he said simply.

The rogues didn’t argue.

They turned and disappeared into the forest without another word.

Silence fell again.

Ariana stood frozen.

Her chest was rising and falling quickly.

The stranger stepped closer.

Moonlight revealed his face more clearly now.

Strong features.

Cold eyes.

A quiet power that was impossible to ignore.

“You shouldn’t be here,” he said.

Ariana swallowed, her voice barely steady.

“I didn’t have a choice.”

He studied her for a moment.

Then,

something shifted in his expression.

Recognition.

“Ariana Vale,” he said.

Her breath caught.

“You know me?”

The man held her gaze.

“Yes.”

A pause.

Then,

“I’ve been expecting you.”

Ariana’s heart skipped.

Her mind raced.

There was only one person this could be.

Only one Alpha carried that kind of presence.

Her voice came out as a whisper.

“…Kael?”

The man didn’t smile.

Didn’t soften.

But his eyes didn’t leave hers.

“Welcome to Shadowfang ter

ritory,” he said.

The words sent a chill down her spine.

There was no warmth in them.

No comfort.

Only truth.

And a quiet warning.

Ariana stood there, caught between fear and something else she couldn’t name.

She had crossed the line.

There was no going back now.

And deep in her chest,

she knew,

This was only the beginning.
