Lyra's POV

The shelter was still dark when I woke.

The fire had burned to coals. Ronan was asleep on the bench. The scholar hadn't moved. Outside, the quiet that came just before dawn had settled over everything—the night finished, the morning not yet started.

I reached into my pocket and took out the letter.

I read it once more in the dim light from the coals.

I made the decision without you. I knew it was wrong when I made it. I did it anyway because I was afraid.

I thought about the letter.

  • The Luna He Gave Away    CHAPTER FIFTY-EIGHT: The Walls

Lyra's POVTwenty minutes after I left him in the corridor, Kael came to the records room.I heard him coming and kept my eyes on the document in front of me while he came in and stood near the table and told me the new arrangements.Guard rotation on every exit. No external movement until the archer was identified. The eastern courtyard was suspended indefinitely. All settlement communications are to go through Gareth. His voice was even the whole time. Measured. The same voice he used for patrol adjustments.I listened to all of it."All right," I said, when he finished. He waited."That's all," I said. "I heard you."He left.I put my pen down and looked at the table and stayed very still.Sera appeared an hour later. She came in without knocking, sat across from me, and said nothing. She folded her hands on the table and waited with the patient expression of someone who had decided that silence was more useful than filling it.I let it sit for a moment. Then I told her what Kael h

  • The Luna He Gave Away    CHAPTER FIFTY-SEVEN: The Attempt

Lyra's POVTwo days passed. The healer confirmed the patrol wolves had been poisoned through contaminated water on the eastern route, not lethally or accidentally. A measured dose. Enough to pull three wolves off the route for a specific window of time.Kael had the eastern perimeter adjusted before the next morning's patrol. New rotation. No announced schedule. He told me about it before Gareth.I noticed that too.The welfare review was a twice-weekly session I had been running for three months.Settlement leaders came to the eastern courtyard and brought their reports directly to me, and we worked through whatever needed addressing. It had started because problems were landing on my desk through too many intermediaries and arriving distorted by the time they reached me. The direct session fixed that.It had become routine. That morning, seven settlement leaders were there. Corvus had come himself rather than sending his usual representative, which meant he had something he wanted t

I knew it was wrong when I made it. I did it anyway because I was afraid.I thought about the letter. Not about what it meant for us, but about the simple fact that he had finally written the one thing he had never allowed himself to say aloud.I had asked him for honesty for months. He had given me a version of it—improved, increasingly genuine, but still filtered through the instinct to manage. The letter was the version with the filter removed. It changed enough. Not everything. Not enough to be harmful.I folded it back into my pocket and waited for the others to wake. The ride back was quie

  • The Luna He Gave Away    CHAPTER FIFTY-FIVE: The Argument

Lyra's POV The waypoint shelter was larger than the hunter's shelter from the blizzard. Two rooms, proper provisions, and a fire pit that drew well. Ronan assessed it when we arrived with the efficiency of someone who had been managing practical situations without staff for the past week, and it had clearly done something useful to him. He moved through the space without ceremony, without expecting anyone to handle things on his behalf, finding what was needed and setting it up without announcing that he was doing it. The scholar ate quickly and slept. She had a practical relationship with someone who understood that being useful required being functional. Ronan gave me the chair by the fire and took the bench along the wall without making it a gesture. I sat and looked at the fire and did not think about Kael. I thought about Kael constantly and in considerable detail. The first message arrived an hour after we reached the shelter. Ronan's rider handed it to me at the door—a

  • The Luna He Gave Away    CHAPTER FIFTY-FOUR: The Cost

Lyra's POVEverything moved at once.Kael was on his feet before Gareth finished the sentence. Ronan was already standing. The scholar pushed back from the table with the practiced calm of someone who had been in dangerous rooms before and knew that panic was the least useful response."How many?" Kael asked."Forty," Gareth said. The outer gate is holding. The captain is buying time.""How much time?""He can hold them for an hour under the inspection protocol before the authorization gives them legal right to enter."One hour.Kael looked at the table. Not at the people around it—at the surface, the way he looked at things when he was arranging a problem he hadn't finished solving."Ronan," he said. "The evidence you have. The seal authentication log. The forged documents. Can you get it in front of the noble council in time to challenge the removal authorization?""Not from here," Ronan said. "Aldric is in the capital. Two days minimum.""And the authorization is real, even if the

  • The Luna He Gave Away    CHAPTER FIFTY-THREE: Ronan Arrives

Lyra's POVThey came through the main gate at mid-morning.Four riders, Ronan, two personal guards, and a woman I didn't recognize. They rode without palace markings, without official colors, the way people rode when they didn't want to announce what they were.Kael and I were already at the gate when they arrived. I had stood beside him at this gate for enough arrivals now that it no longer required thought; this was simply where I stood.Ronan dismounted first. The last time I had been in the same space as Ronan was the dinner where Kael's hand had covered mine on the table. Ronan had looked at me across that table and understood something, and I had watched him understand it, and neither of us had said anything about what had been understood. That felt like a long time ago.He looked at me now, and I looked at him, and what passed between us was not the complicated wreckage I would have predicted six months ago. It was something quieter. The recognition of two people who had known
