_Leah's POV_
Later that afternoon, while Tariq was outside tending to chores around the house, I found myself in the kitchen with Susan. I offered to help her prepare dinner, not wanting to sit around doing nothing when they had already done so much for me. “I can chop the vegetables,” I said and grabbed a knife from the counter. Susan smiled warmly at me. “Are you sure? You should be resting, Leah.” “I am sure,” I insisted. “I need something to keep my hands busy.” She didn’t argue with me after that, and soon enough, we were working side by side, preparing the meal. It felt... nice. There was a certain ease to being in Susan’s presence. No judgment, no pressure. Just warmth. I hadn’t realized how much I had missed this simple, domestic normalcy. It felt like... family. I was slicing carrots when Susan suddenly spoke up. “You’re a good girl, Leah. Your mother would be proud of you.” Her words took me by surprise. I hadn’t thought about my mother in such a long time, not like this, anyway. The memories of her were too painful. But hearing Susan talk about her now, it made something inside me stir. “I hope so,” I whispered. “I never knew she was... who she was.” “She loved you more than anything,” Susan said softly. “She gave up everything to protect you.” A lump formed in my throat, and I nodded. “Thank you for telling me that.” We worked in silence for a while after that, but it was a comfortable silence. I found myself smiling a little as I chopped the vegetables and watched Susan knead the dough for bread. There was something soothing about it all, something that made me feel like I belonged here, even if just for a little while. As the sun began to set, Tariq came back inside, his face flushed from the cool air outside. He glanced over at me, his gaze lingering just a little too long, and I felt a small flutter in my stomach. Was he looking at me that way on purpose? Or was I imagining things? We sat down to dinner together, the three of us at the small wooden table. The meal was simple but delicious—roast chicken, vegetables, and freshly baked bread. I hadn’t realized how hungry I was until I started eating, and for a while, the conversation was light, mostly between Susan and Tariq as they talked about the chores around the house and what needed to be done tomorrow. But as we ate, I noticed something strange. Every now and then, Tariq would catch my eye, a small smile playing on his lips. Once, when I reached for the bread, his hand brushed mine, lingering just a second too long. My heart raced, and I quickly looked away, my cheeks flushing. Was he... flirting with me? I wasn’t sure. He hadn’t said anything outright, but there was something in the way he looked at me, the way he smiled at me. It was subtle, but it was there. Or maybe I was imagining it. I had been through so much in the past few days—maybe my mind was just playing tricks on me. “Tariq, don’t tease her,” Susan said suddenly, her voice full of affection but with a hint of reprimand. “Leah has been through enough.” I blinked and looked up in surprise. Had he been teasing me? I hadn’t even noticed. Tariq just chuckled and gave his mother an innocent look. “I am not teasing her, Ma. I am just being friendly.” “Hmm,” Susan hummed. She was clearly unconvinced. She looked at me, her eyes softening. “Don’t mind him, dear. He has always been a bit of a flirt.” My heart skipped a beat at that, and I quickly looked down at my plate, trying to hide the blush creeping up my neck. Was that what this was? Flirting? Did Tariq... like me? But before I could dwell on it for too long, Susan’s voice broke through my thoughts. “You know,” she said, glancing at Tariq with a playful smile, “I keep telling my son that he needs to find his mate. He is getting older, and I am not getting any younger. I want to see some grandchildren before I am too old to enjoy them.” I froze, my heart suddenly pounding in my chest. Mate. Of course. Tariq hadn’t met his mate yet. That’s why he was single. That’s why he was still living here with his mother. I swallowed hard, trying to push down the strange wave of disappointment that rose up inside me. Of course, Tariq would find his mate someday. And when he did, he wouldn’t need me anymore. I was just... passing through. Tariq sighed and leaned back in his chair. “I know, Ma. Believe me, I know. But I am already twenty-nine, and I haven’t met her yet. Maybe the Moon Goddess hasn’t blessed me with a mate. Or maybe... I’ll have to take a chosen mate instead.” He said the words casually, but as he spoke, his eyes flickered to me, locking onto mine for just a moment too long. My heart stuttered in my chest. What was he trying to say? Was he implying something? Or was I just reading into it too much? I quickly looked away and focused on my plate. My mind was racing. Did Tariq... want me to be his chosen mate? No, that couldn’t be right. I was just an omega, a broken girl with no real future. He deserved better than that. Better than me. But still... the way he had looked at me. The way he had smiled at me. It made me wonder. “Don’t worry, Tariq,” Susan said with a soft laugh. “The Moon Goddess has a plan for everyone. I am sure that you will meet your mate when the time is right.” “I hope so,” Tariq said, his voice low. “But sometimes... I wonder.” There was a strange tension in the air after that, and I couldn’t help but feel like Tariq’s words were meant for me. But I couldn’t let myself believe it. He was just being kind, and I was just... confused. That was all. After dinner, I helped Susan clear the table, my thoughts still spinning. Tariq had been nothing but kind to me since I arrived, but now I wasn’t sure what to think. Was he just being nice, or was there something more? I found myself glancing at him as we worked, wondering what he was thinking. But every time our eyes met, my heart would race, and I would quickly look away. By the time we finished, I was more confused than ever._Leah's POV_I felt my stomach twist as I made my way down to dinner with Tariq. I could still feel the weight of the key hidden in my purse, and the anticipation made it hard to act calm. My mind was miles away, thinking of the secrets that might be waiting for me. But I had to keep up appearances, so I put on a smile and took a deep breath, hoping to make it through the evening. When I walked into the dining room, Tariq was already seated, his eyes lighting up as he saw me approach. “There you are,” he said warmly, pulling out my chair. “I was starting to wonder if you had changed your mind about joining me.”I forced a smile, settling into my seat. “Of course not. I just needed a few minutes to freshen up,” I replied, hoping my voice sounded calm and normal.Dinner was laid out before us, and I felt my stomach rumble slightly. The meal looked delicious; a roast chicken with golden-brown skin, seasoned vegetables, and a side of creamy mashed potatoes. Tariq poured me a glass of red
_Leah's POV_After breakfast the next day, I followed Susan out of the packhouse and into the bustling heart of town. As we walked along the wide streets lined with high-end shops, my eyes took in the displays through large windows. My unease was growing. The gowns and dresses behind the glass sparkled under bright lights, and every item screamed luxury.I hesitated and glanced at Susan. "Are you sure we’re in the right place? These shops look… expensive. Maybe we should look somewhere else."Susan only laughed and waved off my concern. "Oh, don’t worry about the price, dear. It’s all covered. This wedding is important for the entire pack and you should look the part."I nodded, though I felt my stomach tighten. I forced a small smile, hiding the real reason for my nerves. It wasn’t the cost of the dresses, but the key hanging around Susan’s neck. As much as I wanted to slip away from this outing, I needed to keep my focus on that necklace and on how to get it.Susan led me into one o
_Leah's POV_That evening, I sat stiffly at the dinner table with Tariq and Susan. I forced myself to smile, though my mind was far from at ease. Every time my gaze landed on Tariq’s face, it only reminded me of the secrets he kept. The betrayal was still fresh in my mind. Across from me, Susan’s cheerful demeanor felt jarring, like nails on a chalkboard, adding to the weight of my dread. I knew I had to hold myself together, to keep up appearances, but inside I was struggling.Susan’s voice broke my thoughts. “Leah, dear, we were just discussing the timing for the wedding. It seems like three weeks from now, there will be a full moon.” Susan beamed, her eyes warm and excited. “It’s such a perfect symbol, you know. A time of strength, unity…just imagine, a night like that to mark the beginning of your life together.”I felt my heart thud heavily. Three weeks? That was so soon. I struggled to keep my voice steady. “Three weeks… I suppose that could work.” I hesitated, searching for any
_Leah's POV_My heart pounded as I moved back to the closet. I felt like I was playing with fire, but I needed answers. I took a breath, sliding the closet door open and carefully moving the shelf that hid the secret entrance. Darkness met me again, and I flicked on my phone flashlight and slipped inside the hidden room.Once inside, I turned to shut the closet door. I pushed the shelf back into place. If anyone opened the closet from outside, they would see nothing unusual. The hidden room was small and still, with a silence that felt almost heavy. My hands shook slightly as I located the light switch, filling the space with a dim and pale glow. My gaze quickly found the chest on the table. It was the very thing I had come back for.The chest was even more intricate up close, covered in dark wood carvings that felt both beautiful and ominous. I reached out, fingers grazing the cool surface as my eyes caught a symbol in the center of the lid. It was a triangle with three circles insid
_Leah's POV_My heart raced as the door clicked shut behind the young pack member. I let out a shaky breath. I knew that I couldn’t waste time. Tariq had left in a hurry, and he wouldn’t expect me to do anything but wait for his return. But I had other plans.I began pacing the room. How had I not seen the signs before? Tariq had kept his secrets well hidden, always wearing that charming smile. His touch was always so gentle. But now, every touch felt tainted, every smile was a lie. I couldn’t keep pretending to be the devoted mate; I needed answers. My gaze flickered around the room, landing on Tariq’s bedside table. Maybe he had been careless. Maybe, just maybe, he had left something behind, some clue about his plans. I stepped toward the table, holding my breath as I opened the top drawer. Nothing but a few pens, some loose change, and a small notepad. There was nothing. I sighed in frustration and moved to the other drawer, sifting through its contents. There were some spare keys
_Leah's POV_The next morning, I was startled awake by a soft kiss on my forehead. I blinked, feeling the warmth of Tariq’s breath as he leaned closer. He whispered in my ear.“Good morning, beautiful,” he murmured. “I want you… right now.”My heart raced, though not with excitement. Fear twisted inside me, and I forced a soft smile, fighting the instinct to push him away. His touch felt tainted now, heavy with secrets I wished I didn’t know. I had to find an excuse, anything to keep him at a distance.“Oh… don’t you have a lot of work to catch up on?” I asked, my voice soft. “Maybe later?”But Tariq only grinned and wrapped his arms tighter around me. “No. I cleared my schedule for you today. All day, Leah. I’m all yours.”My pulse quickened as I struggled to keep my composure. I felt trapped under his possessive gaze, my mind racing for any way out. “Um… I actually haven’t showered yet, so maybe…”Before I could finish, a sudden knock echoed through the room, breaking the tense sile
