_Kayden’s POV_
I stormed into the packhouse. I was furious. How in the hell had she escaped? I had personally ordered my guards to keep that cellar heavily guarded. No one should have been able to slip in or out without my explicit command. And yet, Leah was gone. Disappeared, as if she had vanished into thin air. The guards had searched everywhere, combing through the packhouse and the woods surrounding the territory. There was no sign of her. No scent. No tracks. Nothing. It was as if she had never even existed. I slammed my fist against the wall, the impact cracking the wood paneling. “Find her!” I roared to the nearest guard. “I don’t care what it takes. I want every inch of this land searched again. Do you understand?” The guard flinched, but he nodded quickly before running out the door to relay my orders. Where could she have gone? I paced back and forth, my mind racing with questions. Who had helped her? There had to be a traitor in the pack. Someone had betrayed me, had defied my orders, and let Leah out. It was the only explanation. But who? I trusted my guards, or at least I thought I did. Now, I wasn’t sure who to trust anymore. My hands clenched into fists at my sides, the anger boiling hotter. Leah’s escape was a direct threat to everything I had built. If she was free, she could cause problems for Selena and me. She could reveal things that would tear this pack apart, and I couldn’t let that happen. I should have killed her when I had the chance. The thought gnawed at me like a relentless beast. If I had just ended her miserable life, I wouldn’t be in this mess right now. She wouldn’t be a danger to us. But I had hesitated, thinking I could break her, punish her into submission. Now I was paying the price for my mistake. The door behind me creaked open, and I turned to see Selena walking in. Her expression was calm, but I could see the slight worry in her eyes. She walked over to me, placing a hand on my arm. “Kayden, you need to calm down. You’re going to drive yourself mad like this.” “How can I calm down, Selena?” I snapped, my voice harsher than I intended. “Leah is gone. We have searched everywhere, and there is no trace of her. She could be out there plotting something right now, for all we know.” Selena frowned, but there was a softness in her eyes that I couldn’t ignore. “I understand, Kayden. But you have to remember that we have already increased security around the pack. There is no way she could get back in without being caught. And if she’s still in the area, the guards will find her.” I shook my head. “But what if she’s already gone too far? What if someone took her out of the territory?” Selena stepped closer, her hand resting gently on my chest. “Kayden, listen to me. It is possible that she is already dead. If she escaped into the forest, there are rogues out there. She wouldn’t have survived long on her own in her condition.” I frowned, the thought swirling in my mind. Could that be true? Leah had been weak when I last saw her. Broken. The beating I gave her was meant to make sure she wouldn’t be a threat. If she had somehow made it out of the pack’s territory and crossed paths with rogues, they would have finished her off for me. Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that she might survive, that she might find a way to come back and ruin everything. “I hope that you are right,” I muttered while running a hand through my hair. “I can’t afford any mistakes, Selena. Not now.” Selena gave me a small smile and leaned into me, pressing her body against mine. “You worry too much,” she said, her voice soft and sweet. “Leah won’t cause any problems for us. And even if she does, we will handle it together. We are stronger than she is.” I wrapped my arms around her, pulling her close, though my mind was still racing. Selena had always been able to calm me down, but this situation felt different. It wasn’t just about Leah being gone. It was the uncertainty, the feeling that I had lost control. Selena tilted her head up to look at me, her eyes shining with excitement. “Instead of worrying about Leah, why don’t we focus on more important things? Like our engagement. I can’t wait to get married to you, Kayden. To finally be your wife and mark you as mine.” Her words should have made me feel better. I should have been thrilled by the thought of our engagement, of marking her and making her my mate in every way. But a part of me, small and buried deep inside, felt uneasy. I had pushed aside my bond with Leah, convinced myself that it didn’t matter, that Selena was the one I truly wanted. But now, with Leah gone, that small part of me twisted in confusion and regret. I forced a smile, trying to push the thoughts away. Selena was my future. Leah was nothing but a memory, a mistake that needed to be erased. “You’re right,” I said, brushing my fingers through Selena’s long, golden hair. “We should focus on us. Leah is gone. She won’t ruin what we have.” Selena smiled brightly, standing on her toes to kiss me softly on the lips. “That’s better. No more worrying about her. Soon, we’ll be married, and everything will be perfect.” I kissed her back, trying to let go of the tension in my chest. “I love you, Selena,” I whispered against her lips. “I love you too, Kayden,” she murmured, her eyes gleaming with satisfaction. “And I’ll always be by your side. Nothing can come between us.” Her confidence was reassuring, and for a moment, I let myself believe her words. Leah was out of the picture now. Whatever had happened to her, whether she was dead or hiding somewhere, it didn’t matter. I had Selena. I had my pack. Nothing could threaten that. But deep down, a nagging feeling lingered. A sense of unfinished business. I couldn’t shake the thought that Leah was still out there somewhere, plotting her revenge. And if she was, I would have to deal with her once and for all._Leah’s POV_Fred rushed after Kayden, leaving me alone in the dining hall with Ray, the Gamma. The room suddenly felt cold despite the warm tea in my cup and the golden sunlight slipping through the windows. My heart was pounding, loud and wild. Tariq was here. He had come for me.Ray gave me a glance but didn’t speak. I sat frozen. Every second felt like an hour.Athena whispered, "Stay calm, Leah. Breathe. You have the gun. You are not powerless."My hand drifted to the scarf under my shirt. I could feel the hard metal tucked at my back. It was the only thing keeping me from bolting out of my seat.I wanted to run. I wanted to hide. But I forced myself to sit still.Minutes passed. Then footsteps echoed in the hallway. Kayden returned with Fred beside him.I looked up quickly. Kayden's expression was tight and serious."He is gone," Kayden said as he approached me. "Tariq came asking about you. He said you had disappeared. He believes you came here. He was... certain."My breath ca
_Leah’s POV_The next morning, a soft knock woke me up. I shot upright in the bed, my hand instantly reaching for the gun I had kept on the nightstand beside me. My heart pounded as I stared at the door. I needed to be ready. What if it was someone who had bad intentions? "Leah?" a familiar voice called. "It's Fred. Alpha Kayden asked me to wait for you downstairs. Breakfast is ready."Fred. I let out a shaky breath and glanced around the room. Light was streaming through the window, soft and golden. It looked peaceful, but nothing felt peaceful inside me.Athena stirred. "It’s okay. He doesn’t sound like a threat. But keep your guard up."I got up from the bed and looked around for something I could use to strap the gun to my body. My eyes landed on a long silk scarf draped over a nearby chair. It must have been left there as part of the room’s decor, but it would do.I tied the scarf around my waist and slipped the gun underneath it, positioning it against my lower back. Then I pul
_Leah’s POV_I sat in silence as the car moved through the dark forest. My hands were still tied and my feet still bound. My heart was beating so loudly in my chest that I thought Kayden could probably hear it. I kept my face turned to the window, trying to control my breaths, but my hands wouldn’t stop trembling.Athena stirred inside me. “Stay alert,” she whispered. “He might mean what he says, but we must be careful.”I nodded to myself, my gaze fixed outside. Trees passed like ghostly shapes, and my thoughts tangled themselves up like thorned vines. I kept seeing Tariq in my mind. He would be looking for me already. How would I hide? Going back to Blood Moon Pack was the last thing he would ever expect me to do. Maybe that was my only advantage. My heart gave a strange ache. Going back to this place that had caused me so much pain felt like stepping into my own nightmare. When the car finally pulled up at the gates of Blood Moon Pack, I felt my hands tighten into fists. Memories r
_Leah’s POV_I stayed very quiet. My hands were still tied. My feet were bound and my heart was thudding in my chest like it was going to burst. I didn’t know what to say. My mouth felt dry. My thoughts were spinning wildly.Athena was stirring inside me. She was tense but strangely calm. “He looks like he truly regrets it,” she whispered. And that scared me most of all.Kayden was apologizing to me? Kayden; the man who had rejected me, who had punished me, who had left me in a dark cell like I was nothing? It felt like I was dreaming. Could this be real? Or was this some new plan to trap me? My hands were trembling even though they were tied. And then I thought of Tariq. Tariq would surely be looking for me now. How would I escape him? Maybe Kayden was working with him. That thought made my heart pound even faster.“Is this a trick?” I asked Athena.“I don’t feel him lying,” she answered softly. “But we need to be careful. Even if he seems regretful.”I shifted in my seat. My eyes we
_Leah’s POV_I didn’t need him to take off his mask for me to know who it was. Even without seeing his face, I could recognize him by his scent and those deep gray eyes that looked at me so intensely. Kayden. My heart thudded wildly. What was he doing here?A part of me was scared, and another part of me was furious. Before I could speak, I felt his hand still over my mouth. My hands were trembling and I could feel my chest tightening. I tried to twist away but his grip was strong.I didn’t know who was worse between him and Tariq.Athena? I whispered in my mind. She was tense. “Stay sharp, Leah. He might mean you harm. Don’t let your guard down.”I nodded internally. And then I felt it; that horrible, familiar rage stirring inside me.I bit down on his palm, my teeth sinking into his flesh. He jerked his hand back and I gasped for breath.“Kayden, let me go!” I screamed. “Let me go, or you’ll pay for this!”Before I could do anything more, he grabbed my waist and hauled me off my f
_Leah’s POV_The day of the ball finally came, and my heart was beating faster than it ever had before. I kept telling myself that this was my one real chance. I had never been to the Duskfang pack before. Everything felt unfamiliar. That was exactly why I hoped it could help me disappear.I kept repeating in my head that Tariq wouldn’t dare harm me, not until after we were married. That was my only comfort as I stared at my reflection in the mirror. The red ballgown he picked for me fit perfectly. Too perfectly, like it was tailored for someone who was already his. The silky fabric felt soft against my skin, but it also felt like a cage.Athena’s voice whispered gently in my mind. “You look beautiful, Leah. But don’t lose focus.”I breathed in slowly. “I know. This might be my only chance.”My hands trembled as I brushed my hair and tied it back. “If we don’t escape tonight, Athena,” I thought, “I might never get another shot.”She answered firmly. “And we will escape. I will help yo
