_Kayden’s POV_
I stormed into the packhouse. I was furious. How in the hell had she escaped? I had personally ordered my guards to keep that cellar heavily guarded. No one should have been able to slip in or out without my explicit command. And yet, Leah was gone. Disappeared, as if she had vanished into thin air. The guards had searched everywhere, combing through the packhouse and the woods surrounding the territory. There was no sign of her. No scent. No tracks. Nothing. It was as if she had never even existed. I slammed my fist against the wall, the impact cracking the wood paneling. “Find her!” I roared to the nearest guard. “I don’t care what it takes. I want every inch of this land searched again. Do you understand?” The guard flinched, but he nodded quickly before running out the door to relay my orders. Where could she have gone? I paced back and forth, my mind racing with questions. Who had helped her? There had to be a traitor in the pack. Someone had betrayed me, had defied my orders, and let Leah out. It was the only explanation. But who? I trusted my guards, or at least I thought I did. Now, I wasn’t sure who to trust anymore. My hands clenched into fists at my sides, the anger boiling hotter. Leah’s escape was a direct threat to everything I had built. If she was free, she could cause problems for Selena and me. She could reveal things that would tear this pack apart, and I couldn’t let that happen. I should have killed her when I had the chance. The thought gnawed at me like a relentless beast. If I had just ended her miserable life, I wouldn’t be in this mess right now. She wouldn’t be a danger to us. But I had hesitated, thinking I could break her, punish her into submission. Now I was paying the price for my mistake. The door behind me creaked open, and I turned to see Selena walking in. Her expression was calm, but I could see the slight worry in her eyes. She walked over to me, placing a hand on my arm. “Kayden, you need to calm down. You’re going to drive yourself mad like this.” “How can I calm down, Selena?” I snapped, my voice harsher than I intended. “Leah is gone. We have searched everywhere, and there is no trace of her. She could be out there plotting something right now, for all we know.” Selena frowned, but there was a softness in her eyes that I couldn’t ignore. “I understand, Kayden. But you have to remember that we have already increased security around the pack. There is no way she could get back in without being caught. And if she’s still in the area, the guards will find her.” I shook my head. “But what if she’s already gone too far? What if someone took her out of the territory?” Selena stepped closer, her hand resting gently on my chest. “Kayden, listen to me. It is possible that she is already dead. If she escaped into the forest, there are rogues out there. She wouldn’t have survived long on her own in her condition.” I frowned, the thought swirling in my mind. Could that be true? Leah had been weak when I last saw her. Broken. The beating I gave her was meant to make sure she wouldn’t be a threat. If she had somehow made it out of the pack’s territory and crossed paths with rogues, they would have finished her off for me. Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that she might survive, that she might find a way to come back and ruin everything. “I hope that you are right,” I muttered while running a hand through my hair. “I can’t afford any mistakes, Selena. Not now.” Selena gave me a small smile and leaned into me, pressing her body against mine. “You worry too much,” she said, her voice soft and sweet. “Leah won’t cause any problems for us. And even if she does, we will handle it together. We are stronger than she is.” I wrapped my arms around her, pulling her close, though my mind was still racing. Selena had always been able to calm me down, but this situation felt different. It wasn’t just about Leah being gone. It was the uncertainty, the feeling that I had lost control. Selena tilted her head up to look at me, her eyes shining with excitement. “Instead of worrying about Leah, why don’t we focus on more important things? Like our engagement. I can’t wait to get married to you, Kayden. To finally be your wife and mark you as mine.” Her words should have made me feel better. I should have been thrilled by the thought of our engagement, of marking her and making her my mate in every way. But a part of me, small and buried deep inside, felt uneasy. I had pushed aside my bond with Leah, convinced myself that it didn’t matter, that Selena was the one I truly wanted. But now, with Leah gone, that small part of me twisted in confusion and regret. I forced a smile, trying to push the thoughts away. Selena was my future. Leah was nothing but a memory, a mistake that needed to be erased. “You’re right,” I said, brushing my fingers through Selena’s long, golden hair. “We should focus on us. Leah is gone. She won’t ruin what we have.” Selena smiled brightly, standing on her toes to kiss me softly on the lips. “That’s better. No more worrying about her. Soon, we’ll be married, and everything will be perfect.” I kissed her back, trying to let go of the tension in my chest. “I love you, Selena,” I whispered against her lips. “I love you too, Kayden,” she murmured, her eyes gleaming with satisfaction. “And I’ll always be by your side. Nothing can come between us.” Her confidence was reassuring, and for a moment, I let myself believe her words. Leah was out of the picture now. Whatever had happened to her, whether she was dead or hiding somewhere, it didn’t matter. I had Selena. I had my pack. Nothing could threaten that. But deep down, a nagging feeling lingered. A sense of unfinished business. I couldn’t shake the thought that Leah was still out there somewhere, plotting her revenge. And if she was, I would have to deal with her once and for all._Leah's POV_I felt my stomach twist as I made my way down to dinner with Tariq. I could still feel the weight of the key hidden in my purse, and the anticipation made it hard to act calm. My mind was miles away, thinking of the secrets that might be waiting for me. But I had to keep up appearances, so I put on a smile and took a deep breath, hoping to make it through the evening. When I walked into the dining room, Tariq was already seated, his eyes lighting up as he saw me approach. “There you are,” he said warmly, pulling out my chair. “I was starting to wonder if you had changed your mind about joining me.”I forced a smile, settling into my seat. “Of course not. I just needed a few minutes to freshen up,” I replied, hoping my voice sounded calm and normal.Dinner was laid out before us, and I felt my stomach rumble slightly. The meal looked delicious; a roast chicken with golden-brown skin, seasoned vegetables, and a side of creamy mashed potatoes. Tariq poured me a glass of red
_Leah's POV_After breakfast the next day, I followed Susan out of the packhouse and into the bustling heart of town. As we walked along the wide streets lined with high-end shops, my eyes took in the displays through large windows. My unease was growing. The gowns and dresses behind the glass sparkled under bright lights, and every item screamed luxury.I hesitated and glanced at Susan. "Are you sure we’re in the right place? These shops look… expensive. Maybe we should look somewhere else."Susan only laughed and waved off my concern. "Oh, don’t worry about the price, dear. It’s all covered. This wedding is important for the entire pack and you should look the part."I nodded, though I felt my stomach tighten. I forced a small smile, hiding the real reason for my nerves. It wasn’t the cost of the dresses, but the key hanging around Susan’s neck. As much as I wanted to slip away from this outing, I needed to keep my focus on that necklace and on how to get it.Susan led me into one o
_Leah's POV_That evening, I sat stiffly at the dinner table with Tariq and Susan. I forced myself to smile, though my mind was far from at ease. Every time my gaze landed on Tariq’s face, it only reminded me of the secrets he kept. The betrayal was still fresh in my mind. Across from me, Susan’s cheerful demeanor felt jarring, like nails on a chalkboard, adding to the weight of my dread. I knew I had to hold myself together, to keep up appearances, but inside I was struggling.Susan’s voice broke my thoughts. “Leah, dear, we were just discussing the timing for the wedding. It seems like three weeks from now, there will be a full moon.” Susan beamed, her eyes warm and excited. “It’s such a perfect symbol, you know. A time of strength, unity…just imagine, a night like that to mark the beginning of your life together.”I felt my heart thud heavily. Three weeks? That was so soon. I struggled to keep my voice steady. “Three weeks… I suppose that could work.” I hesitated, searching for any
_Leah's POV_My heart pounded as I moved back to the closet. I felt like I was playing with fire, but I needed answers. I took a breath, sliding the closet door open and carefully moving the shelf that hid the secret entrance. Darkness met me again, and I flicked on my phone flashlight and slipped inside the hidden room.Once inside, I turned to shut the closet door. I pushed the shelf back into place. If anyone opened the closet from outside, they would see nothing unusual. The hidden room was small and still, with a silence that felt almost heavy. My hands shook slightly as I located the light switch, filling the space with a dim and pale glow. My gaze quickly found the chest on the table. It was the very thing I had come back for.The chest was even more intricate up close, covered in dark wood carvings that felt both beautiful and ominous. I reached out, fingers grazing the cool surface as my eyes caught a symbol in the center of the lid. It was a triangle with three circles insid
_Leah's POV_My heart raced as the door clicked shut behind the young pack member. I let out a shaky breath. I knew that I couldn’t waste time. Tariq had left in a hurry, and he wouldn’t expect me to do anything but wait for his return. But I had other plans.I began pacing the room. How had I not seen the signs before? Tariq had kept his secrets well hidden, always wearing that charming smile. His touch was always so gentle. But now, every touch felt tainted, every smile was a lie. I couldn’t keep pretending to be the devoted mate; I needed answers. My gaze flickered around the room, landing on Tariq’s bedside table. Maybe he had been careless. Maybe, just maybe, he had left something behind, some clue about his plans. I stepped toward the table, holding my breath as I opened the top drawer. Nothing but a few pens, some loose change, and a small notepad. There was nothing. I sighed in frustration and moved to the other drawer, sifting through its contents. There were some spare keys
_Leah's POV_The next morning, I was startled awake by a soft kiss on my forehead. I blinked, feeling the warmth of Tariq’s breath as he leaned closer. He whispered in my ear.“Good morning, beautiful,” he murmured. “I want you… right now.”My heart raced, though not with excitement. Fear twisted inside me, and I forced a soft smile, fighting the instinct to push him away. His touch felt tainted now, heavy with secrets I wished I didn’t know. I had to find an excuse, anything to keep him at a distance.“Oh… don’t you have a lot of work to catch up on?” I asked, my voice soft. “Maybe later?”But Tariq only grinned and wrapped his arms tighter around me. “No. I cleared my schedule for you today. All day, Leah. I’m all yours.”My pulse quickened as I struggled to keep my composure. I felt trapped under his possessive gaze, my mind racing for any way out. “Um… I actually haven’t showered yet, so maybe…”Before I could finish, a sudden knock echoed through the room, breaking the tense sile
