Chapter 1

Ethan was still outside the door, barely holding back his anger.

"Elena is your fated mate."

"Those first two surgeries—you lied to her, told her the pups had no heartbeat, then turned around and handed two living pups over to Vivian."

"And now she's carrying the third. You're going to hurt her again?"

"I don't have a choice."

Kane's voice was barely above a whisper.

"If Vivian hadn't taken that blade, I'd be dead right now."

"The first thing she said when she woke up—she asked if I was hurt. But the healer told her she'd never be able to carry a pup of her own."

His breath caught for a second.

"She didn't want money. Didn't want rank. She just wanted a pup to call her mom."

"At first she said one would be enough. Then she wanted a second..."

"This time she swore on the Moon Goddess—after she gets the third, she'll really leave with them."

Ethan slammed his fist against the wall.

"What about Elena? Did you ever ask her if she wanted to pay your debts?"

"She doesn't even know her pups are still alive!"

Kane didn't answer.

After a long silence, I heard him murmur:

"She loves me so much. She'll forgive me."

Footsteps faded down the hall.

Tears slid down my cheeks as I sank into memory.

Four years ago, at the Moon Festival, Kane walked up to me in front of the entire pack. He sliced his palm open, pressed it to mine, and we exchanged blood.

He said I was the one mate the Moon Goddess had chosen for him.

The night the bond took, our minds linked for the first time.

He was so excited he couldn't sleep. He called out to me through the mind link over and over.

"Elena—my Luna. We're going to have so many pups together."

And we did. Two of them.

Only Kane told me each time that they never made it into this world.

When I woke from the surgeries, he was always by my bedside.

His eyes bloodshot. His palms marked with fresh claw wounds.

I thought that was a father grieving his lost pups.

Now I understood. That was the guilt of a man who'd given his pups away and had to live with the lie.

He loved me.

But every time it came down to me or Vivian, he took my pups first to repay his debt. Then he came back to love me.

A tiny movement stirred inside my belly.

I pressed my hand over it.

"Easy, little one."

"Mommy's not letting you become anyone's payment."

I picked up my phone and sent a message to a number with no name saved.

"Help me fake my death. I need to leave Kane for good."

Seconds later, the reply came:

"Tomorrow night. Midnight. I'll get into the hospital."

I deleted the thread and tucked the phone back under my pillow.

The day after tomorrow, I was taking my pup and walking out of Kane's life for good.

Noah and Lia didn't sleep at all their first night in the North.Lia cried for Vivian. Noah held his sister in the corner, refusing anything I offered.I didn't push them.I left the light on. Left warm milk on the table. Then I sat outside the door with Rowan and stayed there all night. The next morning, the milk was gone.Three days in, Noah let me brush Lia's hair.Ten days in, Lia fell and reached for me without thinking. So much had been stolen from us. We could only pick it back up piece by piece.Noah still wouldn't call me Mom.He'd cry in his nightmares, saying he wasn't a bad kid. Then he'd wake up with his jaw clenched, refusing to shed a single tear.Until the first snow of winter. He spiked a fever.I held him all night, wiping his forehead with cool water over and over.At dawn, he opened his eyes and found my hand still wrapped around his."Why didn't you leave?"His voice was raw."Because you were sick.""But I scratched you. Three months later, I saw Kane again at the Moon Goddess Court. He'd lost so much weight he was barely recognizable. The golden eyes that once held Alpha power had gone dull and hollow. The moment he saw me walk into the hall with Rowan in my arms, he shot to his feet."Elena..."Just my name—and his voice broke. He tried to come closer. The guards crossed their silver spears in front of him.Kane didn't fight it.He stood there, across the long stone steps, looking at me. Tears filled his eyes slowly."You're alive."I didn't answer. I just bent my head and wiped a smear of milk from Rowan's mouth.Ethan brought Noah and Lia in after.A few months had passed. Noah had grown a little taller.Lia still didn't remember me. She hid behind her brother, nervous and wary.Noah saw the crescent birthmark on Rowan's shoulder. Then he looked at the bloodstone—three silver strands of light, all connected. The wall of defense in his eyes finally cracked. The trial lasted all day.Birth records. S

Winter came earlier in the North than in Silvermoon territory. The witch Mara settled me in a small town by the lake. It didn't belong to any pack—rogue wolves, witches, and humans all lived under the protection of the Moon Goddess Court. After the mind link was severed, I ran a fever for seven straight days.My wolf curled up in the depths of my consciousness and stopped answering my calls.Mara said the mate bond was meant to stitch two souls together. Tearing it apart by force was like carving a chunk of bone out of a living body."Any regrets?"She asked.I touched the tiny life still moving inside me and shook my head. The pain was real. But so was the freedom. Two months later, on the night of the full moon, I went into labor. The old injuries made delivery brutally hard.As blood soaked through the sheets, I saw that cold operating door again. I saw Kane holding my hand, telling me we could try for a fourth.Fear closed around my throat.I could barely breathe."Elena. Look at m

Vivian instinctively tucked both kids behind her."They're just little. I was afraid you'd take them away from me.""So you taught them to hurt Elena?"Kane walked toward her, step by step."You knew she thought the pups were dead. You knew she cried for them for three years. And you brought them to her room, made them call her names?"Vivian's tears fell instantly."What about me?"She lifted her shirt, revealing the scar on her lower abdomen—the one corroded by silver poison."Who took this wound for? Who lost her wolf form, lost the right to be a mother—and who pitied me?"Before this, that scar was all it took to turn every accusation of his into guilt. But this time, he didn't look away."The blade was meant for me. The debt should've been mine to pay.""You can take my Alpha position. Even take my life.""But I had no right to give away Elena and her pups."Vivian froze. Then she grabbed Noah and held him tight."Too late.""They've called me Mom for three years. I was there when

When Kane woke, it was already dusk.He didn't wait for the healer to pull the IV from his hand. He stumbled toward the morgue. My "body" was still lying on the cold stone slab.He took the hand with the full moon ring and called my name over and over.Like if he said it enough times, I'd open my eyes and curse him out.But the next second—the corpse's fingertips crumbled to ash.The ash spread up the wrist in seconds. A few breaths later, all that was left on the slab was a wilted sprig of moonflower and the ring."A witch's decoy spell..."Ethan picked up the dried leaves and snapped his head toward Kane."She's not dead."Kane went still for a long moment. Then he dropped to his knees in the pile of ash and laughed. And as he laughed, tears hit the floor."She's not dead... Elena's still alive."But that flash of joy lasted only a second.A witch's decoy spell requires the mate bond as sacrifice. I'd chosen to tear my soul apart just to make him believe I was dead. That meant—in my

At six in the morning, my sudden groan jolted Kane awake again."Luna's water just broke. Fetal heart rate is dropping steadily."The healer examined me and said it was urgent. Surgery had to happen now.At eight, they wheeled me into the surgical wing.Kane held my hand the whole way.At the door, he still wouldn't let go."Alpha, family can't go in."The nurse reminded him.Kane didn't seem to hear. He leaned down and pressed his forehead to mine."I'll be right out here.""Call me through the mind link. The second you're scared."I asked him:"What if this time, not just the pup—but I don't make it either?"His pupils shrank. He cupped my face with his hand."Don't think like that. This time, you and the pup will both be fine."I smiled."Okay."The surgical doors slid shut, closing him out.Vivian was there too.She sat at the far end of the hallway, gripping her old cane.Ethan saw her. His face went cold."Who let you in?""I'm here to welcome my third pup into the world. And thi
