Cassy struggled to keep her eyes open even with Jace’s commanding voice echoing around the clearing that was to be the start and end point of the next Trial. Not only had she had a bad sleep, but crying all night had left her with red puffy eyes that ached with heavy emotion. Ice hadn’t managed to calm their colour, and foundation could only do so much, so she stayed at the back of the group of contestants and kept her head down while the rules of the Survival Trial were laid out.

She hoped no one would notice her there, but every time she looked up, Zac had his eyes on her. There was something imploring about his

‘You’ve got to be kidding me. You’re not going to be able to beat me, Cassy.’ Mandy gave her a big condescending toothy grin. ‘Give yourself a chance to actually pass this Trial and go for another bag.’ Cassy didn’t react to her, just stayed in the same ready position, waiting. ‘What? you think because you beat Katie when she was being an arrogant bitch that you can win?’ Mandy snorted. ‘Don’t call her that.’ ‘Seriously, Cassy, I don’t care that you’re not from our pack, nor that you’re in the Trials, but right now you are standing between me and my mate’s success.’ ‘As are you.’ ‘What...’ Cassy struck. She charged, using the river’s current to carry her forward and lunged toward Mandy. The woman barely managed to dodge, rolling out of the way so sharply, she lost her footing and her head dropped beneath the water. Cassy didn’t wait for her to recover, diving beneath the surface and grabbing the bag with her canines. She yanked at it, but Mandy’s bite was strong and reluctant t

Cassy was running. Hard and fast, her four legs pumping with everything she had in her. Her face split into a grin as most of the women peeled off from the group immediately racing for the first bag - to retrieve it and bring it back to the pack to claim their place in the Top 5. Just as she had hoped. Only four wolves pushed on but soon the other two split from Katie and Cassy leaving the pair of them to charge onwards. But they didn’t stay together for long. Two miles and ten minutes into the Trial, Katie threw her a look. ‘Are you sure about this?’ She asked over mindlink ‘As sure as I can be.’ Cassy’s plan wasn’t foolproof. It didn’t even have a high probability of working, but with the closest two bags likely being fought over with speed and strength, she needed a different way to win. ‘Go, get the bag. I’ll meet you upstream at the meeting spot. If I take longer than half an hour, get back to the pack without me.’ Katie grumbled her uncertainty, but they were approaching the

“What did you do?” Katie whispered beside her, as Cassy tightened the straps on her boot for the fourth time. She could feel Jace’s presence like a vibration in the air but couldn’t stand to look his way. Not when they were preparing for the next Trial that could possibly see her eliminated from the contest. Now she was in the Top 10, Cassy was stuck. If she dropped out of the Trials or was eliminated, she’d have to become one of the High Guards’ mates, but to continue was to face nine highly trained women who were all attempting to win. Well, maybe only eight of them wanted to win, Katie proclaimed she wasn’t interest in Jace, but she also hadn’t spared Zac a glance all morning. Cassy wondered what was going on there but whenever she hinted at the conversation Katie shut it down. “What do you mean?” “Alpha Jason looks like a kicked puppy. An angry kicked puppy.” She winced as he reprimanded a nearby warrior for not wearing appropriate attire for the day. They stood at the edge o

  • The Luna Trials   Chapter 35 - Steamy hot springs

Though her muscles protested the climb to the packhouse that evening, it was the hum on her lips that lingered after the training session. Cassy ghosted her fingers across them, remembering the look in Jace’s eye, the delicate brush of his thumb and the way he had consumed her with his kiss. She had never felt like that before; her single focus becoming him, their bodies pressed together and yet still sinking deeper into his embrace. Heat stirred within her at the memory, followed by a flutter in her stomach. They were meeting at the hot springs to relax and heal after training but after the last time they were there and the kiss earlier, excitement curled through her at the thought of being alone with him. Thoughts of the Alpha played in her mind until she stepped from the tunnels that led deep into the mountains from the packhouse to the hot springs. The pink hue of the room wrapped around her, drawing her into its sanctuary. The light in its cavern was dim, only a few of the lant

“Are you sure we’re allowed to do this?” Cassy asked for a second time, unable to help but notice that Jace had cleared the entire training field for their training session again the next day. After the way he unapologetically gave her his pin in front of the High Guard and their families, and happily sat with her before the survival trial, she didn't think he was embarrassed of being with her, so she could only assume he was trying to avoid people seeing that they were training together. “Isn’t this cheating or favouritism or something?” “Cheating, no, favouritism, maybe.” He shrugged but there was that small smile again that made her heart flutter. “Almost every High Guard wolf has his eye on a woman or two in the contest and tries to get them to the Top 10. A little favouritism is allowed.” “Is that why you gave me your pin?” She teased, while handing him a water bottle as they took a breather after their warmup. He took it from her, hooking his hand over hers to keep her from pu

  • The Luna Trials   Chapter 33 - Training with the Alpha

The training field felt large with only the two of them on it. The last time Cassy had been there was during the strength trial when most of the pack had turned up to watch, flooding the field with spectators. She hadn’t realised how big and isolated the area was until she was stood at its centre opposite Jace. A shiver traced her spine. She hadn’t been fully alone with him since that time in the hot springs when he had unabashedly watched her get out of the waters and she had liked it. Cassy hadn’t thought about that night since it happened, but Katie and Alex’s teasings about Jace had made it replay in her mind, alongside all the other interactions she’d had with the Alpha in the past week. Dancing together at the ball, where he gave her the pin she still wore. Him gifting her the obsidian-handled blade, now tucked against her thigh, that had saved her life. The way he had carried her home after the attack and let her nuzzle into him. Cassy’s cheeks burned, her heart kicking into
