Sara took a step back, her glass trembling slightly in her hand.

“No.” She said quickly, her voice firm. “I’m not available.”

The man smiled, unfazed. He turned his head and took a step closer, closing the gap she had just created.

“You’re really funny.” He said with a chuckle. “I like that. Keep the jokes coming.”

She kept stepping back slowly, her heart beating fast in her chest. Her fingers itched to throw her drink in his face or break the glass over his head, but she didn’t want to cause a scene.

“I don’t want to talk to you.” She said clearly, her eyes looking back to the crowd, hoping someone would intervene.

He leaned in further, still smiling like he didn’t hear her. “Come on, don’t be like that. You’re clearly bored. Let me keep you entertained.”

Sara opened her mouth to reply, but before she could, a strong hand slid around her waist, pulling her gently but firmly back. She gasped, startled, stiffening instantly, not daring to turn around.

Then she heard the

Sara hadn’t known this kind of anxiety in a long time. Every morning she woke up hoping to see Kyle, to maybe ask him about the mess that was unfolding, and every morning, she didn’t. Days had passed and he remained unreachable, and whenever she saw him at all, it was only in passing. His eyes looked distant, he always had that faraway thinking look, or was surrounded by people who shared the same emotion in their eyes. It made her nervous. Terrified, even, especially because of them. And by them, she meant none other than Vanessa and Quentin. The ones who betrayed her, and then hung her out to dry. Just the thought of their names made her want to scream. After the death of one of their own especially, if they found out that she was here… she wouldn’t survive it. She just knew that. Her time in Soomsdale had taught her that people like them didn’t just threaten, but they acted as well. And when they did, it was always cruel. But even so, no one, not even them, could go toe-to-t

The moment Kyle went back into the hall, the noise of the place swallowed him. He couldn’t believe what had happened, it sounded more like a prank than an actual thing. But it was not a prank. People were already whispering and giving him strange looks like he was already proven guilty. He felt the urge to throw them a dirty look but decided not to. Kyle walked straight toward the centre of the room, where a small crowd had gathered around the collapsed body of Lord Frazer. “Step away from him.” He commanded. They obeyed instantly. The body of the man was pale, his mouth was slightly open, and his eyes were fixed and lifeless. This was terrible. How could someone had died at his event? Huntsman stood off to the side, and he couldn’t have looked more confused, and two other men stood guard, looking useless. Everyone looked shaken, but no one looked more furious than Kyle. “Alpha, we…”Kyle shot the speaker a glare, his eyes cold as ice, instantly silencing them. Then he tur

“Would you like to leave?” “Yes.” Sara said clearly. “I’d like to leave.” Kyle didn’t say anything for a moment. His eyes fell on the snobbish people in front of them, but his mind was made up. He got up and began walking. She followed quickly behind, her heels clicking against the polished floor. He reached the tall glass doors that led to the balcony and pushed them open with one smooth motion. She stepped out just behind him.The night air swept over her skin and she enjoyed the cool and calm of it. The moon hung above them beautifully in the dark here, casting silver lights across the stone railing and marble floor. She didn’t speak, neither did he. An attendant appeared from nowhere, giving a small bow. “Would you like a chair brought out, Alpha?” “Yes.” Kyle said, then looked at Sara. “Just one.” The attendant disappeared, then returned seconds later with a low, elegant chair. Kyle motioned to it. “Sit.” It didn’t sound like a command, and so she lowered herse

Sara opened her eyes slowly, blinking against the light filtering through the curtains. Her head still ached faintly from last night’s confusion, and her chest felt like something had curled up and gone to sleep inside it. Her mind was full of questions. Questions about Tamara, about Kyle, and about herself. Was she going crazy? She turned to the side and paused. There were two boxes on the bed beside her. Both were neatly wrapped in matte silver paper and tied with thin black ribbon, and they sat there like gifts from someone who didn’t want to be thanked. A folded note rested on top of one. Sara’s brows creased as she sat up and picked it up. She opened it slowly, feeling nervous. -Christmas event by 12. Be there on time.- That was all. No greeting, no name, not even a smiley face. It was cold, clipped, and commanding. Underneath the paper was a pair of shoes and a necklace. Did Kyle send this? She wondered as her fingers curled slightly around the paper. Whoever sent th

It was nigh time and the only source of illumination came from the flickering candles on the stone walls and a single lamp at the center of the long, narrow table. Thick maps and folders were spread out across its surface, each one marked with red ink, black dots, and hastily scribbled notes. Kyle preferred it this way. This was an ultra-secret task, so he preferred to do it this way. He stood at the head of the table, tall and silent, his arms folded across his chest as he stared down at the map of their territory. His jaw was clenched tight and his eyes shot daggers. He didn’t like what he was seeing. He didn’t like any of it and more than anything, he wanted to put a stop to it. Tran, his war chief, was pacing slowly to the side, his heavy boots hitting the floor with quiet thuds. Huntsman, Kyle’s oldest advisor and most trusted mind, was seated to his right, flipping through a worn leather folder with narrowed eyes. Beside the door stood Kyle’s personal guard, the man silent a
