Chapter 2

작가: Aetheria
The next evening, I smoothed my dress and said to Kael, “Let’s go. We’re attending the banquet together.”

His expression froze, but he quickly put on a gentle, considerate face. “Didn’t we agree you wouldn’t go?”

I knew he didn’t want me there—afraid that I’d disturb Selena. But I just wanted to see the pack one more time.

Soon I would leave, and I wouldn’t come back.

“I am the pack’s Luna. I have to show my face.”

Reluctant as he was, he had to agree. “Fine. We’ll just present our gift and leave early.”

At the feast, Selena was already seated at the high table, receiving blessings from the pack and guests.

Everyone praised her perfume, saying it would surely win the Best Fragrance Award—then the whole world would beg to buy it, bringing fortune to the pack.

They also mentioned that the pup in Selena’s womb would become the finest heir the pack had seen in a century, bringing glory to all.

When she saw me walk into the hall, Selena’s expression stiffened. Her nails dug into the armrest, but she quickly suppressed her grimace.

I smelled the fragrance filling the hall, and I understood exactly why they hadn’t wanted me to come.

This was my perfume—a blend of rain?soaked pine needles and moon?flower, my own innovation.

How did my creation end up here? And how had it become hers?

Selena noticed my confusion. She lifted her glass, smiled, and walked toward me, her tone sweet yet laced with mockery.

“Evelyn, do you like the scent? It has a special effect. Close your eyes, and it brings back memories of your beloved.”

That I had prepared it for our wedding anniversary.

Kael loved the scent of moonflower best; he said he liked its meaning—never forgetting one’s beloved.

So I had chosen that fragrance on purpose.

No one had ever made perfume from moonflower before; I toiled for three months, trying countless formulas, before I finally succeeded.

I had planned to recall the time we had spent together on our anniversary.

How ironic—‘never forgetting one’s beloved’ actually meant Selena.

I stared at her coldly, about to demand an answer.

She leaned close and whispered softly, “Moonflower is my favorite scent—thank you for making it especially for me.”

I could no longer feel heartbreak, only numbness.

I didn’t want to say more to her, to avoid any mishap before I faked my death and left.

I turned to leave, but I never expected—

When suddenly she shrieked,

“Help!”

Before I could react, she fell backward, landing on the ground.

Her wine glass shattered, staining her white dress red. Clutching her belly, she wore a pained expression and tears streamed down her face.

The hall erupted.

“Oh my God—!”

“She’s pregnant—the hope of the pack!”

“Someone fetch a witch to heal her!”

Amid the chaos, a single wolf howl cut through—I recognised it instantly.

It was Kael’s. He was worried about Selena.

His wolf was restless—Selena was reaching out to him through their bond.

“Darling, help me—my stomach hurts so much, Evelyn…”

“Don’t be afraid—I’ll help you, and Evelyn will pay for this.”

Through our fated bond, my wolf could feel his anguish. I couldn’t help letting out a mournful whimper.

He finally noticed me.

His tone was extremely anxious.

“Selena carries the pack’s glory. You shouldn’t have pushed her.”

“Don’t you know she’s pregnant? Why did you push her? What has gotten into you!”

“It wasn’t me who pushed her.”

“If not you, then who? Was she going to use her own pup to frame you?”

My heart was bleeding, and tears streamed down my face involuntarily.

I held his gaze, tone was broken:

“First, answer me: why does that perfume smell exactly like the one I made?”

He froze, his eyes darting, then pretended ignorance.

“Just a coincidence. You must have misjudged the scent.”

Then his tone softened, and he explained through our bond.

“I’m sorry I was too anxious just now. If Selena can’t deliver the sacred heir, we won’t be able to leave at all. You understand me, don’t you?”

Leave with me?

I laughed coldly and said no more.

That perfume had been stored in my blending room, which was password?locked.

The only one who knew the password besides me was him—I never kept secrets from him.

The answer to why Selena had my perfume was crystal clear.

But now, our love was a lie; our fate bond was about to end; the gift meant nothing.

I looked at him calmly. He looked anxiously at the witch treating Selena.

Only after the green healing light faded did he relax.

Kael turned back, finally sensing something off about me, and frowned slightly.

“Let’s go home early. I promised I’d spend the evening with you.”

I curved my lips into a faint smile. “

“Let’s go watch the moon at The Eternal Cliff. I haven’t been there in a long time.”

This would be the last time.

Her words made my heart jolt, but I quickly composed myself and said coldly, “Kael, I’ve already died once. Just assume I’m truly dead. Let each other go.”“No!” He raised his head abruptly, his voice laced with despair. “Evelyn, I refuse! Even if you hate me, despise me, hit me, or curse me, just don’t tell me you’re truly gone. I beg you, come back, okay?”My chest ached with a suffocating pain, but I answered calmly, “Kael, what you’ve always wanted was never me. Our beginning was a mistake.”He shook his head, his tone resolute. “No, I was the one who was wrong! I was so stupid back then. Only after you left did I realize how important you are to me!”Seeing that Kael was completely ignoring her, Selena suddenly went mad. Grabbing a nearby reagent bottle, she lunged at me. “Evelyn, go die!”In an instant, I didn’t even have time to react. But Kael immediately stepped in front of me, taking the full force of the reagent bottle. He let out a muffled groan and collapsed to the groun

Alan rushed in.Without a word, he grabbed Selena and pulled her away from me.She struggled for a moment. When she turned and saw it was him, she suddenly let out a cold laugh. “Nice, Evelyn. It hasn’t even been that long, and you’ve already hooked up with someone else?”Her mocking gaze swept over Alan and me before she spoke loudly.“I told Kael long ago that you never had him in your heart! Look, someone is already stepping up to defend you. He still didn’t believe me! This is your true nature!”Alan frowned, stepping in front of me. His voice was deep and firm. “Ma’am, please have some self-respect. This is a place of research. If you want to make a scene, take it elsewhere.”Selena paused but quickly recovered, sneering with utter disdain. “Who are you to him? What right do you have to talk to me about self-respect?”I ignored her madness. I simply picked up the knocked-over test tubes and softly reassured the colleagues beside me, “Don’t worry. It’s fine now.”Watching us, Sele

“Since you can recognize it, that means you know exactly who these formulas belong to,” I said calmly, though my tone carried a hint of sarcasm. “And yet, you still have the nerve to show up here?”Selena’s face instantly turned ashen. She snarled through gritted teeth, “Evelyn, you bitch!”She took another step forward, her eyes filled with pure hatred, as if she wanted to tear me apart. “You think winning this competition will let you turn things around? Dream on!”I ignored her hysteria and simply shielded the workstation behind me.“If you have something to say, we can discuss it somewhere else.”“Somewhere else? You wish!” she mocked with a sneer. “If it weren’t for you, how would I have ended up like this? My awards are gone, my reputation is ruined, and the pack is practically kicking me out! Even Kael...”Her voice faltered when she mentioned Kael. She glared at me with fierce resentment. “You think you’ve really won?”A few passing colleagues stopped and stared, startled by he

Later, I saw a news post on the research center’s internal network—Kael seemed to be planning to step down from his Alpha position and leave the pack alone. The article included a photo of him standing by The Eternal Cliff, captured from the side.He looked gaunt and exhausted, like a wandering ghost.I stared at the photo for a long time. There was no resentment, no satisfaction, only a strange sense of peace. His regret might be real, but so what?I was no longer his mate, and I had no desire to be his redemption.“Evelyn!” Alan’s voice sounded from beside me, pulling me out of my thoughts.I turned my head. He handed me a competition entry form.“This is the Fragrance Alliance’s grand competition. I think you should enter.”“...I won’t go,” I replied coldly.“Why do you always refuse?”“Because I don’t need anyone’s validation.”He sighed. “Perfumery is something you love, isn’t it? Those people from your past can’t destroy your passion unless you give up on it yourself.”“Just give

Some pack members cursed him behind his back for being treacherous. Some said he deserved it. Others pitied him, believing he had lost his one true fated mate.To me, it was all just absurd. His so-called true love had never been me.As he began to dwell on the past, I was slowly walking away.“Evelyn, what are you looking at?” A young voice beside me interrupted my thoughts.I quickly closed the page and turned around. It was Leon, the materials purchaser at the research center.Holding a cup of coffee, he curiously glanced at my screen.“Nothing,” I said softly. “My formula isn’t finished blending yet. I need to get back to work.”“All you ever do is work,” he said with a chuckle, shaking his head. “Want to grab a drink tonight? You should get to know the new colleagues.”I paused for a second, then politely declined, “No thanks. I’m not really used to that.”He didn’t push it, just shrugged and walked away.I stared blankly at my phone screen.I wasn’t unhappy because of them. I was

(Evelyn’s POV)The contents of that crystal would be made public to the entire pack. It was also my farewell to this relationship. While the pack was still buzzing with gossip, I was already inside a fragrance research center. There were no pack politics or trivial dramas here, only quiet studios and various blending materials. With my new identity, I had said goodbye to the version of myself who had only ever looked forward to Kael. When I first joined the research center, I didn’t speak to anyone, focusing solely on my own formula research.I didn’t bother buying new clothes. My daily routine was just back and forth between my dorm and the lab. My colleagues thought I was a weirdo.A month of peace passed before Jak, the rogue wolf who had helped me fake my death, contacted me again.“Your pack is looking for you. That Alpha has gone completely insane.”“Me?” I let out a light chuckle, unable to believe it. “I gave him exactly what he wanted. What else could he possibly want from me?
