Chapter 3

Author: Aetheria
Walking along the night path, Kael reached for my hand as he always did, but I gently pulled away.

After a long silence, he spoke of tomorrow’s plans: “I’ve prepared a surprise for our anniversary. Once this busy period is over, we can start trying for a pup, alright?”

I listened quietly, my gaze fixed on the rising moon above. I said nothing.

When we were near The Eternal Cliff, Selena speak through the bond again.

“My little pup is feeling unwell; please come stay with me, I’m worried about the pup.”

He paused, looking at me with hesitation.

I nodded calmly. “If you have something to attend to, go ahead. I’ll go up alone.”

He kissed my cheek to soothe me, saying, “I’ll just check if Selena is okay; I’ll be back quickly, wait for me.”

Clearly in a rush, he shifted into his wolf form, and loped back.

I climbed The Eternal Cliff alone and looked toward the pack’s territory.

The pack was singing and dancing, lively and joyful.

My wolf let out another mournful howl, as if urging me to go bring him back.

But I didn’t; I didn’t dare to go, nor did I want to see those blinding scenes ever again.

I was the princess of the Golden Wolf pack. Once I was up at Eternal Cliff, just watch the the moon, when a band of rogues ambushed me.

I was bolting for my life, completely terrified. Suddenly Keal appeared out of nowhere. With one single swipe of his claws, he tore my fear to shreds.

I thought he was exactly my Prince Charming, emerging from the shadows.

That night, bathed in moonlight, I mistook him for a gift from the Moon Goddess.

My Alpha father said I should marry an Alpha heir, but I didn’t want to. He was just doing it for the benefit of his family.

I willingly chose to be marked by Kael and sealed our fated mate covenant, regardless.

But what use would I be? All these years of companionship, love, promises—they were nothing but lies.

It was just because he couldn’t openly long for his brother’s widow.

But it didn’t matter; as long as I jumped, the people my father had arranged would catch me…

Far away from here.

The moon view from The Eternal Cliff is the most beautiful in the world.

Legend says that any couple who climbs it together will be blessed by the Moon Goddess.

We had climbed it many times together—surely the Moon Goddess blessed him. So that he can be with his true love

As I stood lost in thought, my phone received a text message from Selena.

[I know you can hear me—he won’t come to you tonight.]

[Let me show you something good.]

Afterward, she sent several photos, covered in dark brown hickeys and red marks of lust across their bodies.

Their wild passion was painfully obvious.

[He couldn’t even hold back while I’m pregnant; just how dependent on me is he?]

[Can’t even keep your man? You should leave on your own and stop bothering us.]

I calmly looked once more toward the moon, praying. May the Moon Goddess bless me too.

It made me see this man clearly.

My covenant tattoo began to burn again, my wolf grew restless.

The tattoo blazed, and my entire body felt engulfed in flames.

The moon gradually sank, and the sun began to rise.

Throughout the entire night, he indeed did not come.

He had abandoned me once again.

I sat on the cliff, gazing up at the moon with hollow eyes, as years of memories flashed through my mind.

Every sweet word, every promise—they were all hollow lies.

I stored all the video evidence in the Crystal of Fate and left it on the cliff.

The people sent by my father were already standing behind me; I nodded at him, and then jumped off the cliff.

Then I leaped off The Eternal Cliff without hesitation—the wind howled past my ears, and all I felt was freedom.

On the other side, Kael was jolted awake by the howl, and only then did he remember he had promised to stay with me last night.

He pushed Selena aside: “I have to go—today is our anniversary, and I promised to be with Evelyn last night.”

Selena got up discontentedly and whined.

“But I need you too…”

He shook his head and refused: “No, I promised her today.”

He had just stepped out when his Beta rushed over: “Alpha! Bad news!”

“Evelyn… Evelyn… was attacked by rogue wolves and fell off Eternal Cliff.”

Her words made my heart jolt, but I quickly composed myself and said coldly, “Kael, I’ve already died once. Just assume I’m truly dead. Let each other go.”“No!” He raised his head abruptly, his voice laced with despair. “Evelyn, I refuse! Even if you hate me, despise me, hit me, or curse me, just don’t tell me you’re truly gone. I beg you, come back, okay?”My chest ached with a suffocating pain, but I answered calmly, “Kael, what you’ve always wanted was never me. Our beginning was a mistake.”He shook his head, his tone resolute. “No, I was the one who was wrong! I was so stupid back then. Only after you left did I realize how important you are to me!”Seeing that Kael was completely ignoring her, Selena suddenly went mad. Grabbing a nearby reagent bottle, she lunged at me. “Evelyn, go die!”In an instant, I didn’t even have time to react. But Kael immediately stepped in front of me, taking the full force of the reagent bottle. He let out a muffled groan and collapsed to the groun

Alan rushed in.Without a word, he grabbed Selena and pulled her away from me.She struggled for a moment. When she turned and saw it was him, she suddenly let out a cold laugh. “Nice, Evelyn. It hasn’t even been that long, and you’ve already hooked up with someone else?”Her mocking gaze swept over Alan and me before she spoke loudly.“I told Kael long ago that you never had him in your heart! Look, someone is already stepping up to defend you. He still didn’t believe me! This is your true nature!”Alan frowned, stepping in front of me. His voice was deep and firm. “Ma’am, please have some self-respect. This is a place of research. If you want to make a scene, take it elsewhere.”Selena paused but quickly recovered, sneering with utter disdain. “Who are you to him? What right do you have to talk to me about self-respect?”I ignored her madness. I simply picked up the knocked-over test tubes and softly reassured the colleagues beside me, “Don’t worry. It’s fine now.”Watching us, Sele

“Since you can recognize it, that means you know exactly who these formulas belong to,” I said calmly, though my tone carried a hint of sarcasm. “And yet, you still have the nerve to show up here?”Selena’s face instantly turned ashen. She snarled through gritted teeth, “Evelyn, you bitch!”She took another step forward, her eyes filled with pure hatred, as if she wanted to tear me apart. “You think winning this competition will let you turn things around? Dream on!”I ignored her hysteria and simply shielded the workstation behind me.“If you have something to say, we can discuss it somewhere else.”“Somewhere else? You wish!” she mocked with a sneer. “If it weren’t for you, how would I have ended up like this? My awards are gone, my reputation is ruined, and the pack is practically kicking me out! Even Kael...”Her voice faltered when she mentioned Kael. She glared at me with fierce resentment. “You think you’ve really won?”A few passing colleagues stopped and stared, startled by he

Later, I saw a news post on the research center’s internal network—Kael seemed to be planning to step down from his Alpha position and leave the pack alone. The article included a photo of him standing by The Eternal Cliff, captured from the side.He looked gaunt and exhausted, like a wandering ghost.I stared at the photo for a long time. There was no resentment, no satisfaction, only a strange sense of peace. His regret might be real, but so what?I was no longer his mate, and I had no desire to be his redemption.“Evelyn!” Alan’s voice sounded from beside me, pulling me out of my thoughts.I turned my head. He handed me a competition entry form.“This is the Fragrance Alliance’s grand competition. I think you should enter.”“...I won’t go,” I replied coldly.“Why do you always refuse?”“Because I don’t need anyone’s validation.”He sighed. “Perfumery is something you love, isn’t it? Those people from your past can’t destroy your passion unless you give up on it yourself.”“Just give

Some pack members cursed him behind his back for being treacherous. Some said he deserved it. Others pitied him, believing he had lost his one true fated mate.To me, it was all just absurd. His so-called true love had never been me.As he began to dwell on the past, I was slowly walking away.“Evelyn, what are you looking at?” A young voice beside me interrupted my thoughts.I quickly closed the page and turned around. It was Leon, the materials purchaser at the research center.Holding a cup of coffee, he curiously glanced at my screen.“Nothing,” I said softly. “My formula isn’t finished blending yet. I need to get back to work.”“All you ever do is work,” he said with a chuckle, shaking his head. “Want to grab a drink tonight? You should get to know the new colleagues.”I paused for a second, then politely declined, “No thanks. I’m not really used to that.”He didn’t push it, just shrugged and walked away.I stared blankly at my phone screen.I wasn’t unhappy because of them. I was

(Evelyn’s POV)The contents of that crystal would be made public to the entire pack. It was also my farewell to this relationship. While the pack was still buzzing with gossip, I was already inside a fragrance research center. There were no pack politics or trivial dramas here, only quiet studios and various blending materials. With my new identity, I had said goodbye to the version of myself who had only ever looked forward to Kael. When I first joined the research center, I didn’t speak to anyone, focusing solely on my own formula research.I didn’t bother buying new clothes. My daily routine was just back and forth between my dorm and the lab. My colleagues thought I was a weirdo.A month of peace passed before Jak, the rogue wolf who had helped me fake my death, contacted me again.“Your pack is looking for you. That Alpha has gone completely insane.”“Me?” I let out a light chuckle, unable to believe it. “I gave him exactly what he wanted. What else could he possibly want from me?
