Chapter 1

Once I confirmed the method to feign death, I hung up.

In three days, I would finally fulfill my fated mate’s expectations—to vanish from his sight forever.

Just then, a familiar scent drifted in from the doorway, it was Kael.

He wrapped his arms around me and asked affectionately, “Who were you on the phone with?”

“Nothing. Just about herbs. I found a new perfume recipe that can hide the scent .”

He kissed my ear lightly, sending a tingling sensation through me.

“You’ve been so busy lately. I feel like I haven’t seen you in ages.”

My wolf let out a comfortable, low rumble, but I suppressed its restlessness.

Ever since Kael and I had formed our mating bond, he had always been gentle and indulgent toward me, he gave me everything I asked for.

A wolf bonds with only one person in a lifetime, and I had always believed Kael would be my lifelong mate.

That was, until half a year ago, when he inherited his brother’s Alpha position.

Because of a Witch’s prophecy, he was forced to take over his brother’s Luna, the Saintess Selena, and impregnate her.

Every night, listening to their passionate howls, my wolf and I wept without end.

Each time they reached their climax, the bond mark seared like fire into my wolf, keeping me from sleep.

It was the proof that the bond was being betrayed.

I had always believed that once Selena fell pregnant, everything would return to how it was.

But Kael’s words shattered my illusion—he had never planned to leave with me at all.

Kael stroked my shoulder gently and suddenly spoke up:

“By the way, tomorrow night we’re holding a Midsummer celebration. We’ll announce Selena’s pregnancy to the pack, and also congratulate her for?being?selected to participate?in?this year’s Best Fragrance Award with her elixir.”

The Best Fragrance Award is the most prestigious award in the world; if we win it, it will bring supreme glory to the pack.

“That Award…” I was also selected to participate.

I started, but he cut me off.

His tone was gentle yet brooked no refusal: “You don’t need to come. I’ll send a gift on your behalf, and I’ll be back soon to keep you company.”

He paused, and his hand slid down to rest on my lower belly.

“We should have a pup too, shouldn’t we? Haven’t you always looked forward to that? It’s better if you stay home and rest to prepare for pregnancy.”

I lowered my gaze, forcing my wolf down—it was whimpering in anguish.

We had been married for years without a pup, and he always said the timing wasn't right.

Now, fearing that I might hinder Selena from winning the Best Fragrance Award this year, he actually took the initiative to suggest it.

He kissed my forehead, completely oblivious to the fact that my heart had already plummeted into an abyss.

Kael was close, and I soon caught another pungent, a cloying rose scent on him—hers.

My nose wrinkled as I held back a sneeze, and my stomach churned involuntarily.

“Our anniversary is coming up soon,” he said. “I’ve prepared a surprise for you—to celebrate three years of our love.”

I suddenly felt his wolf pulse with desire—another wolf was linked to him.

“Darling, that’s also the anniversary of the day we first met. This year, we should celebrate together openly.”

It was Selena…

He had opened his heart to her, allowing her to sense his wolf.

“I’ll brush Evelyn off and come to you—don’t rush.”

I looked up at Kael, and he was still gazing at me tenderly.

So they didn’t know I could hear them.

Love. I repeated the word silently. Suddenly, it felt unbearably ironic.

Our wedding anniversary was also the day he and Selena had first met.

So every time he wanted to commemorate that day,?he wasn't?celebrating our love; he was celebrating his encounter with another woman.

I nodded, swallowed the bitterness, and forced a smile.

“Alright. I’ve prepared a surprise for that day too. You must come and be with me.”

He pulled me into his embrace again and answered indulgently,

“Of course, darling. Whatever you say, I’ll do.”

That night, I could not sleep. My wolf would not settle inside me.

I got out of bed and took out the gifts he had given me before.

A sapphire ring—I rubbed its inner band under the moonlight and faintly made out “S&K” engraved on it.

The limited-edition forest perfume—he had queued for days to get it, but it was a scent Selena had once blended.

A moonstone necklace with a totem at its base—he said the twin wolves represented our love, but the pattern in the middle was the Saintess’s exclusive emblem.

All these details I had never paid attention to before now unveiled themselves before my eyes one by one.

Someone else had long since taken residence in his heart.

I've completely given up.

Her words made my heart jolt, but I quickly composed myself and said coldly, “Kael, I’ve already died once. Just assume I’m truly dead. Let each other go.”“No!” He raised his head abruptly, his voice laced with despair. “Evelyn, I refuse! Even if you hate me, despise me, hit me, or curse me, just don’t tell me you’re truly gone. I beg you, come back, okay?”My chest ached with a suffocating pain, but I answered calmly, “Kael, what you’ve always wanted was never me. Our beginning was a mistake.”He shook his head, his tone resolute. “No, I was the one who was wrong! I was so stupid back then. Only after you left did I realize how important you are to me!”Seeing that Kael was completely ignoring her, Selena suddenly went mad. Grabbing a nearby reagent bottle, she lunged at me. “Evelyn, go die!”In an instant, I didn’t even have time to react. But Kael immediately stepped in front of me, taking the full force of the reagent bottle. He let out a muffled groan and collapsed to the groun

Alan rushed in.Without a word, he grabbed Selena and pulled her away from me.She struggled for a moment. When she turned and saw it was him, she suddenly let out a cold laugh. “Nice, Evelyn. It hasn’t even been that long, and you’ve already hooked up with someone else?”Her mocking gaze swept over Alan and me before she spoke loudly.“I told Kael long ago that you never had him in your heart! Look, someone is already stepping up to defend you. He still didn’t believe me! This is your true nature!”Alan frowned, stepping in front of me. His voice was deep and firm. “Ma’am, please have some self-respect. This is a place of research. If you want to make a scene, take it elsewhere.”Selena paused but quickly recovered, sneering with utter disdain. “Who are you to him? What right do you have to talk to me about self-respect?”I ignored her madness. I simply picked up the knocked-over test tubes and softly reassured the colleagues beside me, “Don’t worry. It’s fine now.”Watching us, Sele

“Since you can recognize it, that means you know exactly who these formulas belong to,” I said calmly, though my tone carried a hint of sarcasm. “And yet, you still have the nerve to show up here?”Selena’s face instantly turned ashen. She snarled through gritted teeth, “Evelyn, you bitch!”She took another step forward, her eyes filled with pure hatred, as if she wanted to tear me apart. “You think winning this competition will let you turn things around? Dream on!”I ignored her hysteria and simply shielded the workstation behind me.“If you have something to say, we can discuss it somewhere else.”“Somewhere else? You wish!” she mocked with a sneer. “If it weren’t for you, how would I have ended up like this? My awards are gone, my reputation is ruined, and the pack is practically kicking me out! Even Kael...”Her voice faltered when she mentioned Kael. She glared at me with fierce resentment. “You think you’ve really won?”A few passing colleagues stopped and stared, startled by he

Later, I saw a news post on the research center’s internal network—Kael seemed to be planning to step down from his Alpha position and leave the pack alone. The article included a photo of him standing by The Eternal Cliff, captured from the side.He looked gaunt and exhausted, like a wandering ghost.I stared at the photo for a long time. There was no resentment, no satisfaction, only a strange sense of peace. His regret might be real, but so what?I was no longer his mate, and I had no desire to be his redemption.“Evelyn!” Alan’s voice sounded from beside me, pulling me out of my thoughts.I turned my head. He handed me a competition entry form.“This is the Fragrance Alliance’s grand competition. I think you should enter.”“...I won’t go,” I replied coldly.“Why do you always refuse?”“Because I don’t need anyone’s validation.”He sighed. “Perfumery is something you love, isn’t it? Those people from your past can’t destroy your passion unless you give up on it yourself.”“Just give

Some pack members cursed him behind his back for being treacherous. Some said he deserved it. Others pitied him, believing he had lost his one true fated mate.To me, it was all just absurd. His so-called true love had never been me.As he began to dwell on the past, I was slowly walking away.“Evelyn, what are you looking at?” A young voice beside me interrupted my thoughts.I quickly closed the page and turned around. It was Leon, the materials purchaser at the research center.Holding a cup of coffee, he curiously glanced at my screen.“Nothing,” I said softly. “My formula isn’t finished blending yet. I need to get back to work.”“All you ever do is work,” he said with a chuckle, shaking his head. “Want to grab a drink tonight? You should get to know the new colleagues.”I paused for a second, then politely declined, “No thanks. I’m not really used to that.”He didn’t push it, just shrugged and walked away.I stared blankly at my phone screen.I wasn’t unhappy because of them. I was

(Evelyn’s POV)The contents of that crystal would be made public to the entire pack. It was also my farewell to this relationship. While the pack was still buzzing with gossip, I was already inside a fragrance research center. There were no pack politics or trivial dramas here, only quiet studios and various blending materials. With my new identity, I had said goodbye to the version of myself who had only ever looked forward to Kael. When I first joined the research center, I didn’t speak to anyone, focusing solely on my own formula research.I didn’t bother buying new clothes. My daily routine was just back and forth between my dorm and the lab. My colleagues thought I was a weirdo.A month of peace passed before Jak, the rogue wolf who had helped me fake my death, contacted me again.“Your pack is looking for you. That Alpha has gone completely insane.”“Me?” I let out a light chuckle, unable to believe it. “I gave him exactly what he wanted. What else could he possibly want from me?
