I had been in an online relationship with Alpha Steve for five years without ever meeting him in person. We made plans to meet in person three times. Each time, my voice locked up and I ran away. The fourth time, I finally pushed open the hotel room door. Rose petals covered the bed, but Steve had his arm around another woman. He said, "Lavinia, you stood me up three times. If he could replace his date, I could replace mine. I turned, walked out of the room, and grabbed the first man who passed by. I had no idea at the time that he was the Alpha King!

Chapter 1 A mask covered half of Leander's face. He looked down at me, his voice flat.

"You don't know who I am?"

I was too worked up to really hear him. I kept my head down and typed.

"I'm sorry, but... would you go on a date with me tonight?"

He looked at my red-rimmed eyes. He did not even ask why. He only said quietly, "All right."

The door behind me flew open, and Steve followed me out.

The smile was gone from his face. He seemed to realize this was not going the way he had expected.

"Lavinia! It was a joke, and you actually went and found someone else?"

I gripped my phone and backed away a few steps.

Steve came closer, glanced at the stranger beside me, and sneered.

"Just because I brought Caroline, you grabbed some random man and offered yourself to him? And he's wearing a mask. Is he too ugly to show his face?"

I looked up at him, then down at my phone and typed, "You're the one who replaced me first. And you've already marked her, haven't you?"

He read the screen and frowned. "Five years together and you can't take a joke? Besides, Caroline is my mate. Was I supposed to mark you instead?"

Before I could answer, Caroline followed him out.

She took Steve's arm and said, "You're not a pureblood. What good would his mark do you? You're a Beta's daughter. Stop making a scene."

Then she saw the stranger at my side. Amusement flickered in her eyes, and her tone turned mocking.

"You really did just grab someone."

"Stop sulking. I'm willing to keep you on the side. Caroline is fine with it!" Steve said, his expression cold.

I stared at Caroline in disbelief. The two of them made me sick.

She blinked at me, all innocence. "What? I'm only trying to help."

Steve said nothing. He reached over and tucked her hair behind her ear.

The gesture was practiced, and that made it worse.

I typed, "No, thank you. I hope the two of you have a good life!"

I put the phone away and walked away.

"Stop right there!" Steve called after me again. "Haven't you made enough of a scene? I know what this is. You want me to come after you and coax you back."

I typed one more line. "I'm not asking you to coax me back. I'm done with you."

His expression shifted. I did not explain further.

The stranger I had pulled in to pose as my boyfriend took my hand. "Let's go."

I fell into step with him.

Steve released his Alpha pressure and raised his voice. "Lavinia, do you know what you look like? You look cheap."

My knees buckled, and I started to sink to the floor in front of him. Then a stronger wave of Alpha pressure swept through the room.

I had not expected such overwhelming power from the stranger at my side. Even Steve could not help frowning.

Leander drew me toward the elevator and noticed me looking at our joined hands.

He typed his name on his phone: Leander.

"Are you sure you want me to take his place tonight?" he said suddenly.

I looked up. My eyes were still wet.

I nodded. Leander's lips curved, but he lowered his voice.

"Then I won't just take his place—and it won't be just for tonight."
