Chapter 41: The Sound of Silence

“IT’S GOING to hurt at first. But hey, you will be okay,” I heard Luther whisper to the little girl in the backyard. I think she was about nine to ten years old. The other kids were in the garden. I could hear their sheer laughter as they play with Beatrix, Kenji, and other volunteers.

She was the only child who didn’t join the activities we laid out for the children here in Saint Vincent orphanage. I heard from the staff that this girl with brown curly hair just arrived two days ago. Her mother left her here and since then, she hadn’t talked to anyone, even to the staff, and was just quietly waiting for her mother’s return.
