Dorian's boots scraped along the pearlescent surface at best, the ground looking infinitely smooth. He was walking on solid moonlight, as much as anything was. Some weightless ground that offered not even the slightest foot hold to him. He had never been too afraid to attempt a trial before, but this time was different.

The Goddess stood before him, shifting forms, showing off eternity and intimidating magic. One minute she was a lovely woman that could be seen, her beauty desolate beneath the burden of centuries gone and her eyes blazing silver like the fury of the beast; the next she was a great presence, felt and not seen but nevertheless there.

This eternal back-and-forth motion between the seen and the unseen was most likely the world’s secret, the union of heaven and the earth. Those eyes, those two fountains of luminous silver, captivated Dorian, but rather than make him feel at ease, he felt intimidated, a bit frightened even.

And through the noise, he heard it. His voice. Not thundering, not booming, but clear, firm and commanding. One of not the greatest, one of the inner dedication of himself, of his own volition. "Keep climbing." And of course, he did. Barging through the voices still whispering over his shoulders, hearing more distinctly the voice that told him to keep climbing, his unwavering will seeping out of him. He crawled up on enthusiastic arms, bellowing chest, thudding and whining hands. He kept on going even when he started bleeding; but he didn’t stop until he had stretched to the farthest distant point of the tower; until his hands spun on whirling vapor around the top of it. The instant he set his foot upon the peak of the tower, the tower disappeared, disappeared like nothing was ever there. He was once again standing on the ground, the wind dancing round him, cloud-like substance tugging at his ankles. And then the vision stole his breath, the earth of the world miles beneath him, b

Dorian watched, his own heart constricting in compassion and pity. This is the test. This is the "sharing" that the Goddess meant when she had spoken of "sharing." There was nothing whatsoever to do with the food here, but rather with the sharing, the reaching out beyond self for others in need. He rolled around, he bellowed at them with his parched-throat, "Come here." "There is food," he croaked in that voice, so off into the alley. They retreated though, in sore eyes, an incredulous disgust born of endless disappointment. People had promised them food before; but it turned out to be empty promises born out of soul-racking disdain for their kind. "Lies" wheezed the old man, the rough rasping breath, the broken voice of one who had lost all his hopes many moons ago. "There is nothing for us." He repeated. Dorian’s head shook, solemn eyes imploring. "Come," he urged. "You will see." They ascended step by agonized step, their bodies weak from hunger. From the alleyway and into th

And now," Arachne turned to Thane, "for the real purpose of my visit."Arachne's demeanor changed, kittenish badness becoming something unthawed and intentional. Now, there was an entirely different type of power radiating off of her, a quality of phenomenal power held in check. "I don't need your pack to keep myself going," she whispered to him, dropping to stage whispers. "I want them on behalf of my Lord.”Thane's blood froze. He had always known, that Arachne served some other power, some foul creature. And to hear it from her, to have her say the word "Lord" so properly, stood the hairs on the back of his neck on end."Your Lord?" he asked, his own voice shaking.Arachne nodded. "He's coming," she stated, her eyes flashing with a fiery passion. "And he'll have an army. He'll have followers who obey. And your pack… they will obey."Thane's heart raced in his chest. He had sold his soul to the devil, and the devil's master had come to claim it. He had negotiated to spare his pack

She came as a ghost, her step as silent as breathing, her presence cold that seemed to penetrate to the very heart of his pack. She stood before him, her eyes bottomless black as always, her lips as cold as ice."You owe me, Thane," she whispered, her voice sweetly tinged with threat. "And this day's payment."Thane's ground fell away beneath him. All that it had cost him those years of running, that effort to remain one step ahead of his devils, had been for nothing. He had seen today on the horizon, but there before him, weighed down by the burdens of his conditioned responses, a strangling sense of despair struck him.He looked at his pack, whose faces he vowed to protect, and knew he could no longer flee. He had to go back to Arachne, and face the wrath of what he had done, however repulsive. "As you will," he breathed out, his voice slick and unfaltering. The grin of Arachne spread wider, her hunt gleam eyes burning hotter."Oh, Thane," she breathed softly, her voice silky as poi

Bermont’s throat had been ripped out, his body lying lifeless on his desk, his empty face blankly regarding the ceiling. And beside him, Lyanna, her elongated body twisted into an impossible shape, her beautiful face contorted into face of terror.Thane's stomach lurched. This wasn’t a clean kill. It was a massacre. The room was trashed, desecrated by gigantic claw marks bigger than what any wolf could have left and through his friend. Obscene symbols, painted red, thick black smudges, painted on the walls. It was an abomination of deformed, ritualistic butchery, painted to look like that of some horrific supernatural being.Backwards, his wolf started snarling in shock and horror, receding and receding until Thane backed away. Not this. This kind of killing was not what he had signed up for.He suddenly felt like he was being watched. From a corner he saw her. Arachne. She had emerged from the shadows, her hands and lower forearm smeared with freshly-shed blood. She glowed."You—" Th
