Chapter Thirty Twoe: Left in the Cold

Selene’s POV

Warmth.

That was the first thing I felt.

I opened my eyes slowly. The air smelled like burning wood. A soft blanket covered my body, and I was lying on something soft. A bed. My skin didn’t ache as much, and the hunger had stopped biting at my stomach, just a little.

For a second, I forgot everything.

Then… it all came rushing back.

The rejection. The pain. The walking. The stranger.

I tried to sit up, but a sharp ache rushed through my head. I groaned and held my forehead. That’s when I heard the door open.

I looked up.

He stood there.

The man who found me.

The one with fire in his eyes and power in his voice.

But now… he looked different.

His jaw was tighter.

His eyes were cold.

“You’re awake,” he said. His voice had no warmth now. Just suspicion.

I opened my mouth to speak, but I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t know where I was. Who he was. What he wanted from me.

“Who are you?” he asked again, stepping closer. “And don’t pretend you’re weak. I’ve seen wolves fake injuries to get into a pack’s land.”

I blinked. “I-I’m not pretending…”

“Really?” He raised a brow. “You just happened to collapse right near my land? You think I’m stupid?”

“I was lost,” I said softly. “I didn’t know where I was going…”

He didn’t look convinced.

His hands were behind his back. His muscles were tense. He looked like someone ready for war.

“You look like someone from royalty,” he said. “You carry yourself like one. But you’re covered in dirt. And you were alone.”

I stayed quiet. What was I supposed to say? That I was betrayed? Rejected? That I had nowhere to go?

“So,” he said, voice sharper now, “are you a spy? Sent to watch me? You think I’ll let you stay here and endanger my people?”

“No!” I said quickly. “I swear. I didn’t even know this place existed—”

“Then why are you here?” he snapped. “Why walk for miles until your body gives up? Wolves don’t do that unless they’re running from something… or toward something.”

I felt tears burn the back of my eyes. I didn’t want to cry in front of him. I didn’t want to look weak. But I was weak. I was broken. My heart, my body, everything in me was falling apart.

“I didn’t come to hurt anyone,” I whispered. “I just… I had nowhere else to go.”

He narrowed his eyes. “That’s not good enough.”

“But—”

He held up a hand. “Enough. I helped you. You’re alive now. But I don’t take in strangers. This isn’t a shelter. And I’m not running a charity.”

I sat up, slowly. My heart was thumping. I could feel the tears now sliding down my cheeks.

“Please,” I said. “Just… a little more time. I don’t have anywhere to go…”

He shook his head. “You can’t stay here.”

And with that, he turned and opened the door.

A cold breeze rushed in.

He looked at me one last time. “You have five minutes. Then I want you gone.”

Then he left.

The door shut behind him.

I sat there, frozen. I couldn’t believe it. He saved me… only to throw me out.

I pulled the blanket off slowly. My legs still shook. My hands trembled as I stood. I looked at the fire. It was so warm. So safe. But it wasn’t mine. None of this was.

I stepped outside.

The cold hit me like a slap.

My clothes were still dirty. My feet were bare. The world outside was silent. I looked around.

I didn’t even know where to go.

There were trees… hills… silence.

Where would I sleep?

Where would I find food?

I tried to take a step forward.

My legs gave out.

I fell to my knees right in front of his house.

I couldn’t move anymore. I didn’t have the strength.

I curled into myself, hugging my arms tight.

The night grew colder.

I started to shiver.

I pressed my cheek against the dirt. The ground was hard… but familiar. I had slept on worse.

A tear rolled down my face.

Why does everyone leave me?

Why does no one believe me?

Why does no one… want me?

I closed my eyes.

The wind howled around me like a warning.

I heard a door open somewhere. Then footsteps. But I didn’t look up.

I was too tired.

Too broken.

If this was the end… then so be it.

At least I tried.

At least I made it this far.

Chapter Thirty Seven : A King, A Scar, A PromiseSelene’s POVThe room was silent.Too silent. The fire in the corner made soft crackling sounds, but they did nothing to warm the cold inside me. My hands lay still over my lap, and I could feel the soreness deep in my bones. Every breath I took reminded me I was still hurting. Still healing. Still trapped.I didn’t know how long I’d been in the Lycan King’s palace, but it couldn’t be more than two days. Still, it felt like weeks. Maybe months. I had lost sense of time the moment I said yes to the proposal.I hadn’t even seen him since last night.Evric.That was his name. Cold and sharp. Like something carved from stone. There was a knock on the door, soft but sure. Before I could answer, the door opened. A woman stepped in quietly, holding a leather bag that smelled of herbs. She was older, with silver hair tied neatly behind her head. Her eyes looked tired, but kind. My back leaned against the same gate he had slammed shut two nights ago. The same man. The same rejection. The same pain.I didn’t cry anymore. I was too tired for tears.I just sat there, head resting on my knees, listening to the silence of a pack that wasn’t mine.I should leave. But where would I go?I had no home, no family, no friends. Just this hollow feeling in my chest and the shame of being thrown out again. The sun had risen and fallen twice. My lips were dry, my head ached, and I was starting to feel dizzy from hunger.
