Chapter 25

Ashlyn's POV

Hunt agreed without hesitation.

That was the thing about him and Injila. The way his whole bearing shifted when he looked at her, not softer exactly. But settled. Like something in him that was always braced came slightly undone.

He loved her.

Completely and without the suspicion he pointed at everything else.

"The investigation is yours," he said. "Full access. Report only to me."

Injila inclined her head. "Of course."

She didn't look at me as they finalized it.

Chapter 31Ashlyn's POV"You can't leave." Lucinda's voice followed me down the corridor. "You're my jailer. You have to,""Stay in the cell," I said without turning."That's not, there are rules,""Lucinda." I stopped walking. Didn't look back. "Stay in the cell."The groaning came again from below. Lower than the first scream. More sustained. The sound of something ongoing rather than something sudden.I followed it.The dungeon had levels I hadn't known about. The passage revealed itself at the far end of the corridor, a staircase descending behind an unmarked door that sat slightly ajar, as though someone had come through it recently and hadn't bothered to pull it fully shut behind them.I pushed it open. The smell hit me first. Iron and sweat and something charred underneath both. The staircase was narrow, the walls close, the torchlight from below casting everything in uneven amber.I went down. The sounds grew with each step. Not screaming anymore. Something worse, the low, rhy

Chapter 30 Ashlyn's POV Lucinda lasted six minutes before she spoke. I know because I counted. The same way I'd counted outside Hunt's study. Giving the anger somewhere to go. "He'll tire of you." Her voice came from the stone bench. Still not looking at me. Addressing the middle distance she'd been studying since she sat down. "Whatever game you're playing." She smoothed the fabric of her dress across her knee with one precise motion. "Whatever you think you've won with the blood cure and the court performance this morning. He'll see through it. He always does." I said nothing. "He sees through everything eventually." Something shifted in her voice. Small and quickly covered. "That's who he is." And there it was. Not in the words. In the thing underneath them. The particular intimacy of someone describing a person they had watched for a very long time. Had studied. Had built a detailed and careful knowledge of, piece by piece, over years. The realization moved through me s

Chapter 29 Ashlyn's POV "Move," I said. Alex didn't move. He looked at me with that particular patience of his, the kind that wasn't passive, that had iron underneath it, and then his hand closed around my arm and he stepped sideways, drawing me with him into the alcove at the bend of the corridor before I'd processed that it was happening. "What," I pulled back. He released me immediately but the alcove was small and his presence filled the rest of it. "What are you doing?" "Keeping you from making another mistake." His voice was low. Not unkind. But carrying the weight of someone who had decided this conversation was necessary regardless of whether I wanted it. "I made a political point," "You publicly challenged his authority." The quiet in his voice made it worse somehow. More serious than shouting would have. "In front of his court. In front of the exact people," He stopped. Exhaled. "You cannot do that again." My heart was going too fast. I pressed my back against the a

Chapter 28 Ashlyn's POV The shock on his face lasted exactly one second. Then it was gone. Replaced by something that moved through his jaw and his shoulders and the full length of him like a current finding ground. He stepped forward from behind the desk and the study suddenly felt half the size it had been. I held my ground. Right up until my back found the wall. He stopped with very little space between us. Close enough that I had to tilt my chin to keep his eyes. Close enough that the controlled fury radiating off him had a temperature. "Watch." His voice came out low and deliberate. Stripped of everything except the warning at its center. "Your tongue." I didn't move. "Saviour of this pack or not." His eyes stayed on mine. Flat and absolute and burning underneath with something I couldn't name. "I will gladly rip it out." I believed him. That was the thing that surprised me, not the words, not the closeness, not the wall at my back. I had been threatened before by men

Chapter 27 Ashlyn's POV I was moving before Ally finished the sentence. "Ashlyn," She caught up quickly, her shorter legs working double to match my pace down the corridor. "He's already decided. Alex tried to," "Where is the great hall from here?" "Left at the end but," I was already turning left. I heard the hall before I reached it. That specific quality of silence that meant a large number of people were holding very still. The kind of quiet that had weight to it. Anticipation pressed into every corner. I pushed the doors open. The court was assembled. Not fully, not the formal arrangement of a summit or a ceremony, but enough. Nobles and council members and high-ranking wolves ranged along the walls, their faces carefully arranged into the expressions people wore when they wanted to watch something without appearing to want to watch it. At the far end, Hunt stood on the raised platform. Below him, Lucinda. She was upright. Her chin level, her shoulders set with the r

  • The Lycan King's Hybrid Bitch Queen   Chapter 26

Chapter 26 Ashlyn's POV I stood in the doorway a second longer. Then I turned back into the room, pulled the top blanket from the bed and walked back to the balcony. I didn't let myself think about it. Thinking about it would make it something. So I just draped the blanket over him, over his shoulders, down across his chest, quickly and without ceremony, the way you did a thing you didn't want credit for. He didn't stir. Up close the shivering was more visible. His jaw was tight even in sleep. His lashes damp at the edges from the rain. I stepped back. Looked at him for exactly one more second. Then I turned and left before the footsteps in the corridor reached the door. The library was empty at this hour. That was why I liked it. No maids. No court members tracking my movements with their careful eyes. No one performing politeness at me while they calculated what I was. Just the high shelves and the grey morning light coming through the tall windows and the particular s
