"I'll accompany you personally," Alaric decides finally, the words clipped with restrained emotion.

When I fail to wilt under his kingly glare as the strongest of men often do, he determines this to be the compromise to end our stand-off. I’d be lying if I said the thought of spending my day in his company was unappealing. But I’d be an unworthy queen if I allowed him to shirk his duties for such an unnecessary cause.

He’ll just have to find it within himself to behave rationally, however unlikely that may be.

"You have border negotiations this afternoon," I remind him, victory within reach though I keep satisfaction from my tone. "Negotiations you've postponed twice already."

The trapped expression that crosses his face would be almost comical in different circumstances – duty to kingdom versus protection of mate creating an impossible choice. Through our bond, I feel his beast's snarling rejection of any separation battling with the king's responsibility to handle threats that

Kieran Alexander's gaze moves between Tessa and me, his quick mind clearly piecing together the unspoken context."Tessa and her companions probably need water for their horses," he says smoothly, diplomatic training kicking in. "I'll show them to the river."His intervention gives me momentary reprieve as he leads Tessa's companions toward the ford, though Tessa herself remains, her expression turning more serious as she studies Lyra."I didn't realize you'd be with him," she says, a genuine apology in her voice. "When I left your community, they said you'd chosen to remain at the palace.""I did," Lyra confirms. "We're returning from a diplomatic mission to a northern settlement." The careful neutrality in her voice makes my chest tighten.Tessa's gaze shifts to me. "Diplomatic mission with the prince himself? You've moved up in the world, healer."There's no malice in her observation, just genuine surprise and perhaps a touch of admiration. Before I can respond, she continues with

KieranI wake before the others, early morning light filtering through cracks in the cabin's aging walls. For a moment, I'm disoriented—the weight of someone's hand in mine, the unfamiliar yet comfortable closeness of bodies nearby. Then memory rushes back. Last night. The conversation. The kisses.Holy shit.I kissed the prince. And Lyra. And they kissed each other while I watched, and somehow it wasn't weird but actually kind of amazing and—I take a deep breath, forcing my racing thoughts to slow. This is uncharted territory for all of us. One night of tentative exploration doesn't magically resolve the complications waiting outside this temporary sanctuary. Court politics, royal succession, traditional expectations—none of those disappeared just because something unexpected and beautiful happened in an abandoned cabin.Carefully extracting myself from our tangle of limbs, I slip outside to check on the horses and scan for any signs of pursuit. The morning air carries the bite of a

LyraThe cabin interior is exactly as Kieran described—solidly built with a single door and two small windows, though the roof has indeed seen better days. A rudimentary fireplace occupies one wall, with simple sleeping platforms built into another. Dust covers everything, but the space is otherwise sound."We shouldn't risk a fire," Alexander decides after examining the chimney. "Smoke would give away our position.""We have cold rations," I point out, "and enough blankets to stay warm."Kieran checks the cabin's single water barrel, finding it partially filled with relatively fresh rainwater. "Roof leaks, but at least it's useful," he observes wryly. We settle in for an unexpected night of close confinement, securing the door and windows as best we can before darkness falls completely. Our horses, sheltered in the lean-to, occasionally nicker softly as they rest from the day's hard ride. The cabin's interior grows increasingly intimate as night deepens outside. Without a fire, we re

LyraMorning light filters through the trees as we break camp, the easy rhythm we've developed making everything flow without much discussion. Alexander packs the horses with methodical care while Kieran ensures our fire is completely extinguished. I find myself watching them both, struck by how natural this feels."What?" Alexander asks, catching my stare."Nothing," I reply, then reconsider. "Actually, I was just thinking how weirdly normal this feels. The three of us."His hands pause briefly on a saddlebag strap. "Yeah. It is weird.""Good weird or bad weird?" Kieran asks, joining the conversation as he shoulders his pack.Alexander and I exchange a glance. "Good weird," we say almost simultaneously.Kieran's smile is small but genuine. "Good. I was thinking the same thing."And just like that, we've acknowledged something that's been building for days. Not a full discussion yet—there's too much ground to cover for a quick morning conversation—but a start. A door cracked open that

Alexander We continue at a steadier pace, watchful for pursuit but fairly confident we've evaded immediate danger. The adrenaline slowly fades, leaving us with a quiet awareness of what just transpired—not just the successful escape from the ambush, but the seamless way we worked together."We'll need to take the long route now," I observe, consulting mental maps. "Krell will have anticipated the direct paths back to palace territory.""The northern loop through Silverwood Forest?" Kieran suggests. "Adds two days but avoids the main roads.""You know Silverwood?" I ask, surprised. "That's deep in royal territory."He shrugs. "I spent time exploring during my healer training. Always been curious about places others said were off-limits."The casual admission makes me smile in spite of the lingering tension from our escape. Of course Kieran would have ignored boundaries even before our current situation forced a broader perspective on all of us.As afternoon wears toward evening, we beg

Alexander "Well, well," a familiar voice drawls from above. Baron Krell stands on a ledge, flanked by Northern soldiers. "The prince himself. Vega will be pleased."My lycan snarls, pushing harder against my control. The silver prevents shifting—that's its purpose—but the beast's fury feeds my strength as I struggle against the restraints."Let him go," Lyra demands, moving protectively closer despite the danger."I think not," Krell replies with cold amusement. "Though you're welcome to join him. We have special plans for the Silverspiral healer."Before he can give orders to his men, Kieran acts. A leather pouch flies from his hand, bursting against the rock face near Krell's position. Smoke billows out—thick, acrid, and definitely not natural."Cover your faces!" Kieran shouts as the alchemical mixture spreads rapidly.Through the growing chaos, I see him produce a knife and begin sawing at the net's ropes, careful to avoid the silver threads. Lyra joins him, their movements coordi

Alexander The morning air carries a bite of frost as we saddle our horses, preparing for the return journey to the palace with Karina's blood safely secured in my saddlebags alongside the moonflower essence. Three days of travel ahead of us, but with all the components finally gathered for the complete ritual."Weather's turning," Kieran observes, checking his mount's girth strap. "Might encounter snow in the higher passes."I nod, assessing the overcast sky with a practiced eye. "We'll push hard today while conditions hold. If we make good time, we can shelter at Pine Falls by nightfall."Lyra emerges from the guesthouse, her cheeks flushed from the cold morning air. It only enhances her beauty and the bond between us pulses with warmth as she approaches. But I notice how she unconsciously positions herself between Kieran and me—not choosing sides but somehow including us both in her sphere of attention.Karina's parting words echo in my mind: "True balance requires acknowledging con

LyraThe bond with Alexander pulses with his awareness of my return, anticipation and relief flowing through our connection as I spot him and Kieran waiting near the central well."She's willing to meet you both," I announce as I join them. "After sunset, at her cottage."Alexander's expression lightens with cautious hope. "Not immediate rejection, then.""Not agreement either," I caution. "And she warned me about Vega's spells having layers of contingencies we might not have discovered yet."Kieran frowns. "That matches what Elder Thalia said about Vega's methods. Her magic often contains delayed reactions or secondary triggers."This unsettling possibility dampens our tentative optimism as Elder Thorn approaches to show us to a small guesthouse at the settlement's edge. After he leaves, Alexander secures the space with habitual thoroughness while Kieran unpacks healing supplies that might need refreshing after our journey. The domestic scene strikes me suddenly with its surprising no

Lyra"Remember, we're here to request help, not demand it," I remind Alexander quietly. "Royal authority may not carry much weight here."He nods, visibly shifting from crown prince to diplomatic visitor in subtle ways—sitting less formally in his saddle, keeping his hands visible and relaxed, his expression open rather than commanding.A small “welcoming committee” awaits us at the settlement's edge—three people positioned deliberately to assess newcomers before they fully enter the community. The central figure steps forward as we dismount—a gray-haired man with the weathered face of someone accustomed to harsh conditions and hard decisions."What brings the Lycan crown to Blackstone Ridge?" he asks without preamble, confirming they've somehow recognized Alexander despite our lack of royal insignia."We seek Healer Karina," Alexander replies with careful respect. "On a matter of mutual concern regarding her aunt."The man's expression doesn't change, but tension ripples through the s
