Kaelen turned back to me, his cold mask firmly back in place, though his eyes still burned with a dark, dangerous heat. He grabbed my wrist, pulling me up off the icy floor.

"Stay behind me and keep your mouth shut," he ordered, his voice low and firm.

"I can fight my own battles," I muttered, yanking my wrist free from his grip. "Marcus thinks I'm a helpless Omega. Let him keep thinking that until I rip his throat out."

A faint smirk crossed Kaelen’s lips for a split second. "Suit yourself, rogue."

We walked out of the dark fortress and up onto the high stone wall above the main courtyard. Below us, Marcus stood near the heavy iron gates, flanked by twenty of his top fighters. He looked clean, well-fed, and arrogant in his black leather jacket and heavy fur cloak.

When Marcus looked up and saw me standing right beside the King, his jaw clenched so hard I could hear his teeth click from fifty feet away.

"King Kaelen!" Marcus yelled, his loud voice echoing off the frozen walls. "Thank you for holding my criminal! Hand her over right now. She murdered my father, our Alpha, and stole pack property."

I gripped the icy stone railing until my knuckles turned white. The sheer nerve of this monster lying through his teeth made my blood boil in my veins.

Kaelen leaned over the railing, looking completely bored by the whole thing. "She claims she didn't do it, Marcus. She claims you killed the old Alpha yourself to steal his seat."

Marcus scoffed, placing a heavy hand on his chest like he was deeply offended. "She’s a lying rogue, Your Highness! An Omega with no honor. Are you really going to take the word of a stray over an established Alpha?"

"I don't care about her word," Kaelen said smoothly, his voice calm and icy. "I care about Lycan law. And according to the ancient laws of the Northern Realm, she is under my jurisdiction now."

Marcus laughed out loud, a harsh, ugly sound. "Jurisdiction? She belongs to the Bloodmoon Pack! You have no right to protect a traitor!"

I stepped forward to the very edge of the wall, looking down at my evil stepbrother.

"You're wrong, Marcus," I called out, my voice ringing clear across the snowy courtyard. I pulled my shirt collar down, exposing the right side of my neck to everyone below.

The dark black crest of King Kaelen was fresh and sharp against my pale skin.

Marcus froze mid-breath. The fake smile died right on his face, his skin turning as pale as the snow under his boots. The twenty men behind him started whispering frantically, their eyes wide with fear.

"She is my Pawn," Kaelen growled, stepping up right beside me and placing a heavy, possessive hand on my shoulder. His massive Alpha power flared out, rolling across the courtyard like a heavy wave. Marcus’s men instantly bowed their heads, their knees trembling as they submitted to a superior Alpha's pressure.

"A Pawn?!" Marcus yelled, his face rapidly turning red with pure rage. "You marked a stray?"

"I marked a woman under my protection," Kaelen corrected him, his eyes glowing a bright, lethal blue. "Touch her, and you touch the North. Challenge her right to asylum, and you challenge me to a duel right now, Marcus. Do you want to step into my arena today?"

Marcus took a quick step back, his boots slipping slightly on the slick ice. He was strong for a pack Alpha, but Kaelen was a Lycan King. Fighting Kaelen in a duel meant guaranteed death.

Marcus glared up at me, his hazel eyes filled with pure hatred. "This isn't over, Valeria," he spat through gritted teeth. "Enjoy your little game. Let's see how long the King keeps a parasite like you around."

He turned on his heel and barked at his terrified men to fall back.

As Marcus marched away in total disgrace, a strange, warm satisfaction washed over me. For the first time in my entire life, I had made that monster back down. It was a small victory, but it felt amazing.

I looked over at Kaelen, ready to thank him, but his cold gaze was locked onto the glowing gold mark still burning beneath my shirt.

"Now," Kaelen whispered, his voice sending a sharp chill down my spine. "We need to talk about what that second mark really means."

Kaelen moved faster than humanly possible. Before the shadowy beast’s black talons could touch my skin, Kaelen tackled me to the side. We crashed hard onto the floor, rolling across the stone as the creature’s sharp claws slashed through empty air, splintering the heavy wooden table where my soup had sat."Stay behind me!" Kaelen roared. He scrambled to his feet, pulling a broad silver sword from the wall display. The creature let out another ear-splitting shriek. It wasn't a real wolf or a human shifter. It was a shadow-beast—a dark construct made of dark magic, smoke, and sharp, icy claws. Its glowing red eyes locked straight onto my neck, completely ignoring the Alpha King standing in front of it.It was summoned specifically for me, I realized, my blood running cold. Someone didn't want to wait for tomorrow's trials. The beast lunged again, its shadowy jaws snapping wide.Kaelen stepped into its path, swinging his heavy silver blade with terrifying power. The steel sliced right th

"Arrest?" I repeated, stepping away from the soup tray. "I haven't even left this room!""Lady Lyra was found collapsed in her chambers five minutes ago, coughing up blood," the lead guard said, his hand resting on the hilt of his heavy silver sword. "Her maid said you offered her a poisoned bowl in the dining hall. The elders want you in the dungeon."I clenched my fists. Lyra was clever. She knew I had exposed her poisoned soup in front of the whole court. So, she took a tiny sip of her own non-lethal poison to make it look like I had retaliated. It was a classic high-born scheme, and these guards were taking the bait."I didn't poison anyone," I said, keeping my voice dead calm. "Look at the tray on my table right now. It’s laced with sweet-root. Why would I poison her when someone is actively trying to paralyze me?""Tell that to the council," the guard barked. He stepped forward, grabbing my arm tightly to drag me out of the room. Before he could pull me into the hallway, a dark,

Kaelen led me into a private room deep inside the castle. The walls were lined with heavy wood, old books, and a massive fireplace that crackled with orange flames. As soon as the door clicked shut, he turned around to face me. The calm, bored look on his face was completely gone."Explain that mark," he demanded, his voice thick with authority. "The crescent moon wrapped in silver flame. Only my fated mate can carry that crest.""I don't know any more than you do," I said, stepping back until my lower back hit the edge of his big desk. "I didn't choose this. I came here to trade maps, not to find a mate."Kaelen crossed his broad arms, his dark eyes dropping to my neck where the golden light was slowly fading. "Omegas don't mate with Lycan Kings. It doesn't work like that.""Good. Then let's pretend it never happened," I snapped, glaring right back at him. "You keep your kingdom safe, and I get my little brother back. That was our deal."He stared at me for a long, quiet moment. A sm

"What kind of trade?" I asked, my pulse beating fast against his fingers.Kaelen didn't let go of my chin. "Marcus is already sending a formal letter demanding your head. If I keep you here as a guest, it means war today. But if I claim you under ancient Lycan law as my temporary Pawn, he can't touch you without challenging me directly."I stiffened, my hands clenching into fists on the cold floor. A Pawn Mate. It was an old law where an Alpha claimed a rogue to protect them, but it meant complete submission."I don't bow to anyone," I said through gritted teeth. "I've had enough men trying to own me.""You don't have to bow," Kaelen replied smoothly, his eyes locked on mine. "You just have to let me place my crest on your skin so my guards and Marcus know you belong to this territory. Do we have a deal, or do I toss you back into the snow for his dogs to finish off?"I swallowed hard, my throat feeling dry as sand. I hated the thought of wearing another Alpha's mark. But my fourteen-

  • The Lycan King’s Pawn   Chapter Two: The Bargain

The guards caught me before I even reached the castle gates.Four giant men in dark leather armor surrounded me, their silver swords flashing in the pale sunlight. I didn't try to fight them. My leg was throbbing too hard, and my body was completely out of energy. I dropped my small hunting knife into the snow and held my hands up.Ten minutes later, two of the guards dragged me down a long, dark hallway and shoved me into a massive stone hall. The air in the room was so cold I could see my breath rising in tiny white clouds. Heavy black banners hung from the high ceiling, and a massive fireplace crackled on the far wall, doing almost nothing to warm the place up.Sitting on a dark stone throne at the far end of the room was King Kaelen. He was even more terrifying in person than the stories said. He had broad shoulders, a sharp jaw, and eyes as cold and blue as glacier ice. His dark aura filled the room, heavy enough to make the air feel thick and hard to breathe. He looked down at m
