Kaelen led me into a private room deep inside the castle. The walls were lined with heavy wood, old books, and a massive fireplace that crackled with orange flames.

As soon as the door clicked shut, he turned around to face me. The calm, bored look on his face was completely gone.

"Explain that mark," he demanded, his voice thick with authority. "The crescent moon wrapped in silver flame. Only my fated mate can carry that crest."

"I don't know any more than you do," I said, stepping back until my lower back hit the edge of his big desk. "I didn't choose this. I came here to trade maps, not to find a mate."

Kaelen crossed his broad arms, his dark eyes dropping to my neck where the golden light was slowly fading. "Omegas don't mate with Lycan Kings. It doesn't work like that."

"Good. Then let's pretend it never happened," I snapped, glaring right back at him. "You keep your kingdom safe, and I get my little brother back. That was our deal."

He stared at me for a long, quiet moment. A small, dangerous smirk touched the corner of his lips. "You have a big mouth for someone who was bleeding in the snow an hour ago."

"Bleeding or not, I survive," I replied.

Before he could answer, a loud knock rattled the wooden door. A tall female warrior stepped inside, her sharp eyes sweeping over my ripped clothes with pure disgust. She wore silver-trimmed armor and carried herself like royalty.

"Your Highness," she said, bowing her head slightly to Kaelen. "The court is already talking about the rogue girl. Lady Rebecca and the elder council want to know why an outsider is being given protection."

Kaelen sighed, rubbing his forehead. "Lady Lyra, this is Valeria. She will be staying in the West Wing under guard."

Lyra looked at me like I was trash off the street. "An Omega in the West Wing? Your Highness, the Trial of Mates starts in three days. The high-born ladies of the court are getting ready. Letting a rogue stay in royal rooms will cause a riot."

"Let them riot," Kaelen said coldly.

"Wait," I interrupted, looking between the two of them. "What is the Trial of Mates?"

Lyra turned to me, her top lip curling into a sneer. "An old tradition. High-ranking females fight in tests of strength, hunting, and skill to win a spot as the King's personal guard and potential wife. Not that an Omega like you would last five minutes in our cold forests."

A hot spark of anger lit up in my chest. Everyone in this castle thought I was weak just because I was an Omega. They had no idea what I had to do to stay alive on the run.

"If I win a spot in the trials, do I get full protection under your laws?" I asked Kaelen directly, completely ignoring Lyra. "Permanent asylum, so nobody can ever kick me out?"

Kaelen’s dark eyes flashed with sudden interest. "Yes. Any female who passes the first round earns permanent legal protection in the North."

"Then put my name on the list," I said, leaning back against the desk with a cool smile.

Lyra laughed out loud, a mean, sharp sound. "Is this a joke? You'll die in the very first test!"

"Then you won't have to worry about me taking your spot, will you?" I shot back.

Kaelen let out a low laugh, the sound deep and smooth. "She stays in the West Wing, Lyra. Put her name on the roster."

Lyra glared at me, her fists tight at her sides, before giving a quick bow and marching out of the room.

I turned back to Kaelen. "I need a bath, clean clothes, and real food."

"You'll get all three," Kaelen said, walking toward the door. "But don't get comfortable, Valeria. The trials aren't a game. My court will try to break you."

"Let them try," I muttered, pulling my thin coat tighter around my shoulders. "I've been broken by worse people than them."

Two hours later, after a long bath, I was sitting on the bed in my new room when a servant brought in a tray of hot soup and fresh bread. My stomach rumbled loudly, but as I reached for the spoon, my nose caught a strange, sweet scent hiding under the smell of the meat.

Sweet-root. A dangerous poison that paralyzed a wolf's muscles for days.

My heart dropped into my stomach. Someone was trying to stop me before the trials even started. But before I could throw the bowl away, the heavy oak door of my room swung open, and three tall guards stepped inside with their swords already drawn.

"Valeria of the Bloodmoon Pack," the lead guard barked, his face pale and serious. "By order of the Elder Council, you are under arrest for the murder of Lady Lyra."

Kaelen moved faster than humanly possible. Before the shadowy beast’s black talons could touch my skin, Kaelen tackled me to the side. We crashed hard onto the floor, rolling across the stone as the creature’s sharp claws slashed through empty air, splintering the heavy wooden table where my soup had sat."Stay behind me!" Kaelen roared. He scrambled to his feet, pulling a broad silver sword from the wall display. The creature let out another ear-splitting shriek. It wasn't a real wolf or a human shifter. It was a shadow-beast—a dark construct made of dark magic, smoke, and sharp, icy claws. Its glowing red eyes locked straight onto my neck, completely ignoring the Alpha King standing in front of it.It was summoned specifically for me, I realized, my blood running cold. Someone didn't want to wait for tomorrow's trials. The beast lunged again, its shadowy jaws snapping wide.Kaelen stepped into its path, swinging his heavy silver blade with terrifying power. "Arrest?" I repeated, stepping away from the soup tray. "I haven't even left this room!""Lady Lyra was found collapsed in her chambers five minutes ago, coughing up blood," the lead guard said, his hand resting on the hilt of his heavy silver sword. "Her maid said you offered her a poisoned bowl in the dining hall. The elders want you in the dungeon."I clenched my fists. Lyra was clever. She knew I had exposed her poisoned soup in front of the whole court. So, she took a tiny sip of her own non-lethal poison to make it look like I had retaliated. It was a classic high-born scheme, and these guards were taking the bait."I didn't poison anyone," I said, keeping my voice dead calm. "Look at the tray on my table right now. It’s laced with sweet-root. Why would I poison her when someone is actively trying to paralyze me?""Tell that to the council," the guard barked. He stepped forward, grabbing my arm tightly to drag me out of the room. Before he could pull me into the hallway, a dark,

Kaelen turned back to me, his cold mask firmly back in place, though his eyes still burned with a dark, dangerous heat. He grabbed my wrist, pulling me up off the icy floor."Stay behind me and keep your mouth shut," he ordered, his voice low and firm."I can fight my own battles," I muttered, yanking my wrist free from his grip. "Marcus thinks I'm a helpless Omega. Let him keep thinking that until I rip his throat out."A faint smirk crossed Kaelen’s lips for a split second. "Suit yourself, rogue."We walked out of the dark fortress and up onto the high stone wall above the main courtyard. Below us, Marcus stood near the heavy iron gates, flanked by twenty of his top fighters. He looked clean, well-fed, and arrogant in his black leather jacket and heavy fur cloak. When Marcus looked up and saw me standing right beside the King, his jaw clenched so hard I could hear his teeth click from fifty feet away."King Kaelen!" Marcus yelled, his loud voice echoing off the frozen walls. "Thank

"What kind of trade?" I asked, my pulse beating fast against his fingers.Kaelen didn't let go of my chin. "Marcus is already sending a formal letter demanding your head. If I keep you here as a guest, it means war today. But if I claim you under ancient Lycan law as my temporary Pawn, he can't touch you without challenging me directly."I stiffened, my hands clenching into fists on the cold floor. A Pawn Mate. It was an old law where an Alpha claimed a rogue to protect them, but it meant complete submission."I don't bow to anyone," I said through gritted teeth. "I've had enough men trying to own me.""You don't have to bow," Kaelen replied smoothly, his eyes locked on mine. "You just have to let me place my crest on your skin so my guards and Marcus know you belong to this territory. Do we have a deal, or do I toss you back into the snow for his dogs to finish off?"I swallowed hard, my throat feeling dry as sand. I hated the thought of wearing another Alpha's mark. But my fourteen-

The guards caught me before I even reached the castle gates.Four giant men in dark leather armor surrounded me, their silver swords flashing in the pale sunlight. I didn't try to fight them. My leg was throbbing too hard, and my body was completely out of energy. I dropped my small hunting knife into the snow and held my hands up.Ten minutes later, two of the guards dragged me down a long, dark hallway and shoved me into a massive stone hall. The air in the room was so cold I could see my breath rising in tiny white clouds. Heavy black banners hung from the high ceiling, and a massive fireplace crackled on the far wall, doing almost nothing to warm the place up.Sitting on a dark stone throne at the far end of the room was King Kaelen. He was even more terrifying in person than the stories said. He had broad shoulders, a sharp jaw, and eyes as cold and blue as glacier ice. His dark aura filled the room, heavy enough to make the air feel thick and hard to breathe. He looked down at m
