-Daphne-
“I don’t know,” my mom said, walking around me as the tailors adjusted the final details of my ceremony dress. It felt tighter than it should, or maybe it was just the knowledge that my union day was approaching, making it hard for me to breathe.
I couldn’t say much anymore. It felt like I was drowning these days, suffocating. I didn’t want this, and it didn’t help that someone else filled my mind now. A werewolf. An alpha. Ana’s cousin, Jackson. And the thoughts were not sweet but filthy, making me feel hot all over. He hadn’t even touched me, and yet I was burning for him.
“It just doesn’t seem right,” my mother sighed.
“Mom, I’m sure it’s fine. You ordered this,” I said, holding out my arms as the long peach-colored dress lifted from the ground, making the tailors hiss at me for ruining their work.
“Yes, but now it makes you look… chubby.”
“Chubby?” I asked, stunned.
“Yeah, it’s too puffy.”
“Puffy?”
“Can we tighten the waist a bit more?” my mother requested.
“Mom, I can barely breathe,” I admitted.
“Good.”
“No, if you tighten it anymore, I’ll faint before we even get through half the ceremony.”
My mom rolled her eyes and walked closer, tugging on the dress, making me gasp as she tightened it just a little more.
“Don’t be so dramatic,” she scolded.
“Me?” I asked, incredulous.
“Yes, you,” she snapped.
“Mom, I can’t breathe!” I growled, frustrated, shoving her hands off me.
“Daphne!”
“What?” I snapped, jumping down from the little podium I was standing on in front of the mirror. Lately, I had a very short fuse. But I couldn’t help it.
“What has gotten into you?” my mom inquired, sounding irritated.
I crossed my arms and sighed. Should I just be honest with her?
You should, Cara, my wolf, urged.
I don’t know. You know how my mom is. She’ll never accept a werewolf.
But we want Jackson, don’t we?
Oh, we do, I replied.
Then be honest.
I stared at my mom for a long moment. It was clear she was waiting for me to speak.
“Can we get a moment alone?” I asked.
My mother sighed, clearly irritated at the delay. “Out. Let me talk to my daughter alone,” she ordered, waving off the tailors.
My family was powerful, and my mom practically acted like a queen—because, in many ways, she was. She carried the power of one.
“Well?” my mom asked as the tailors left, now focusing her attention solely on me.
“What if I was having second thoughts?” I inquired, my voice quieter now.
“About?”
“This. My engagement.”
“Then I’m sure my daughter has suffered a brain bleed,” my mother said dryly, eyes narrowing in disbelief.
“Mom!” I protested, frustrated.
“Daphne, you already broke things off with the king. What would happen if you broke this one off?” she growled at me. “It would embarrass us all! We would never live it down!”
“But what if I was in love with someone else?” The words were out before I could stop them.
My mother’s expression froze, her shock evident. “Sorry?” my mother asked, her voice trembling with confusion.
“What if I was in love with someone else?” I repeated, my heart pounding in my chest.
“You’ve always loved Roman,” she said, almost dismissively. “But he’s taken.”
“Not Roman!” I shouted, my voice sharp. “Someone… else.”
“Someone else?” my mom inquired, raising an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued.
“Yes.”
“Who?” she asked, leaning in.
“He’s from a high-status family,” I said, a hint of pride in my voice despite the fear rising in me.
“Oh, really?”
“And he’s very brave.”
“Oh?”
“Rich.”
“Really?”
“And he’s an alpha,” I added.
“Oh,” my mother said, her smile growing. “Now that’s interesting.”
“A werewolf alpha.”
“Sorry?” My mother’s smile faltered, her expression shifting to one of disbelief. “What did you say?”
“He’s... a werewolf,” I whispered, my heart pounding.
“A... werewolf?”
“Yes…”
There was a long pause. The room felt heavy with silence, and then my mother’s voice broke through, sharp and final. “Over my dead body!”

-Daphne-Two years later.“Jackson?” I called as I walked into my mate’s office. We often spent time together in this space, but I had woken up late today. He lifted his head and smiled at me, his expression brightening as I entered.“Hey,” he replied, his smile growing wider the closer I got.I walked around the desk, grinning playfully. As he reached for me, trying to pull me closer, I playfully moved away, leaving him looking puzzled.“Can’t I touch you now?” he chuckled.“Not yet.”“Oh, are we playing?”“Yup, my own little special game," I admitted.“Is that the game where you tease me mercilessly with your mouth and tongue?” he asked with a smirk.“No," I replied.“Where you strip and drive me crazy?”“Nope.”“I’m getting confused now,” he said, making me laugh. “What kind of game are we playing?”“A guessing game," I revealed.“Okay,” he replied. “Is there a prize for me to win?”He smiled mischievously, and I nodded.“I’m all in, then," he said.“Tell me the first thing that com
-Jackson-Daphne had her fears, but after I recovered and her parents received a proper sentence locking them away for years, she stepped up to the role of luna. I had never seen her flourish like this before. It was as if a hidden side of her had been waiting to emerge, ready to show what she could truly accomplish. We offered the pack members a choice, and almost everyone preferred to merge rather than remain independent.Daphne and those who chose to join her moved to our territory, but she still retained ownership of her parents’ former land and house. She made it clear that anyone who wanted to stay could do so, but they would remain under both our control. Everything was going great between us.I watched from a distance as my mate returned from a late run. Daphne smiled brightly as she saw me on the porch, and I pulled her closer, kissing her deeply.“Hey,” I whispered.“Missed me?” she chuckled.“Very much. We hardly do anything but work lately,” I admitted.“Yeah, what else sho
-Daphne-Jackson had to undergo minor surgery, but the doctor assured me he would recover quickly. It wasn’t long before he woke up, and all of us were there for him. His eyes found me first, and he smiled sweetly.“Hey,” he whispered.“How are you feeling?” I asked.“Sleepy.”“Yeah, the drugs are wearing off slowly.”“Mmm, wonderful,” he murmured.Jackson’s parents moved closer, and I let them have a moment with him as I motioned for Roman to follow me out into the hallway. We stopped a little further away from the others.“I can’t believe they did this,” I said, my voice low but fierce.“How do you want to handle it?”“I want them in jail until they die! If I weren’t such a peaceful person, I would hunt them down myself and end them!”Roman smiled at me, a proud look on his face. Confused, I glanced at him.“What?” I asked.“I just never heard you speak about them like that before.”“Yeah, well, they haven’t tried to kill my mate before. Those bastards!”He nodded slightly. “I will m
-Jackson-I was on the ground, bleeding and completely beaten. I had fought before—had my fair share of bruises and close calls—but this felt personal. The pain was different. I wasn’t sure how many had attacked me, but the unmistakable scent of lycan filled the room, signaling that these were no ordinary wolves. I had managed to take down one of them, who now lay motionless not far from me, but the others loomed above, and I couldn’t understand why they had stopped kicking me.But suddenly, the door opened, and I saw polished shoes approaching. Straining to keep my eyes open, I let them wander up to see Daphne’s father standing before me.“You’ve caused me a lot of problems,” he accused.I tried to speak, but all I could do was cough up blood.“I need to have you removed so I can bring my daughter home.”Hadn’t he already tried to ruin her with those rumors? Why would he want to kill me now?“She… is… mine,” I croaked.“Not for long.”I watched in horror as one of the others handed hi
-Jackson-Daphne was initially scared as we began to dance, but when I asked her what it mattered what other people thought, something shifted in her. She started to enjoy our night. I led her through two dances before we finally joined the party and began to mingle. Not many people wanted to talk to us, but I knew some individuals would never be swayed. They thrived on drama and reveled in the rumors, but we wouldn’t let that bother us. Daphne and I were happy together, and nothing could ruin that.“I see my parents,” Daphne mumbled as she sipped her drink. After a while, we had retreated to the bar to enjoy some time together.“You want to talk to them now?” I inquired.I knew it was the smart move, but Daphne shook her head.“Not yet.”“Well, how about you wait here while I go to the bathroom for a moment, and then we can face them?” I suggested.“Yeah, let’s wait a little. I’ll be right here,” she assured me.I leaned closer and kissed her before downing my drink, then I walked awa
