Chapter 2: Need To Find A Way To Get Better

-Jackson-

If there was one thing my parents had taught me, it was that a rejection was never a solution and something very disrespectful thing to do. Not just to your mate, but to the Goddess. A rejection should only be done if you had an abusive mate.

“DaD, what are you saying?”

“I’m saying I’m looking at half the child I used to have,” he said. “I’m worried. Your mother is scared for you, and you’re this pack’s future alpha. They need you, and you can’t keep this going.”

“You and Mom have always taught me how important it is to honor the bond. How can you now suggest that I should reject her?” I inquired.

“Because where do you see this going, Jackson?” he asked. “You’re not even trying to fight for her.”

“I did!”

“How?”

“Oh, I’m sorry. Am I supposed to stalk her and beg her to be with me?” I snapped. “Should I be following her around all the time, or do you want me to go full caveman style, throwing her over my shoulder and claiming her?”

“Of course not,” he said, shaking his head a bit and looking more devastated than me.

“Dad, I want to fight. Trust me. I want to be with her, but she has made no indication she wants me to.”

“Ana says differently. She says Daphne wants to be with you,” my dad said.

“I know what Ana says, but maybe it isn’t true. Maybe she changed her mind,” I countered.

“Or maybe there is more to it all.”

“What are you saying?”

“Daphne comes from a very traditional family. Did it ever occur to you they are the ones holding her back? That they are the ones wishing for this engagement and not her?”

“I… have thought about it,” I whispered.

Maybe they were holding her back, but why not write to me? Call me? Let Ana reach out to me? I would come get her. I would take her away.

I like that idea.

What? I asked my wolf.

The taking away part.

I’m sorry?

Take her away!

Kidnap her? I inquired.

Yes!

Are you insane? I growled at my wolf.

Told you to stop calling me that!

I rolled my eyes and then saw my dad watching me. He understood I was having more fights with my wolf as well.

“What?” he asked.

“Nothing. My wolf is just being stupid,” I replied.

Ass!

“And calling me an ass.”

“Well, he might be onto something,” my dad joked to lighten the mood.

We watched each other for a little while.

“I know there might be things holding Daphne back, but how would I be able to change them?” I inquired.

“I’m not sure,” he admitted.

“If her family controls her, only she can fight back.”

“I know,” my dad said.

“Then give me a solution.”

“If I had one, Jackson, I would give you one,” he said, sounding so sad.

“Other than rejection.”

“I got nothing else,” he said.

“No, I know,” I sighed.

“Just consider it, because this is killing you, and I can’t watch my child die,” he said. “You are the future here.”

“There is Ana.”

“Ana got so much as queen now to do. She can’t lead this pack too.”

“I’m sure we could figure something out,” I said.

“Jackson, not funny,” my dad scolded. “I have trained you for this. This is your future.”

“Oh, yes, the old speech,” I mumbled.

I was an only child. My parents had pretty much raised Ana, but as my dad said, she was now queen and had other responsibilities.

“Jackson, I’m not saying it to be annoying. It’s true,” my dad said.

“Yeah, but it’s a bit hard to focus on at the moment,” I admitted.

“I know, but it has to be your focus.”

“Easier said than done.”

“It’s why I even suggested the rejection,” he explained.

“And what does Mom say about it?” I inquired.

“She hates it. I do too.”

“But she agrees?”

“Not quite. She wouldn’t give me an answer,” he said.

“So, she doesn’t actually agree. She just… walked away?”

“Sort of,” he said. “So, I knew I had to be the one to bring it up.”

“Wonderful…”

“I know it’s horrible. If I could fix everything in a different way, I would.”

“Then maybe just stay out of it?” I suggested.

“And watch you turn into nothing?” he challenged.

“Sometimes helping means taking a step back.”

“And isn’t that what we did for Ana? And look how close she got to destroying her own future.”

“I know, but she was more closed off than me,” I pointed out. “She had deeper issues. My mate just doesn’t want me.”

“And that is causing you a lot of pain,” he reminded me.

“I’m aware. I’m the one living with that pain every day, Dad.”

“Then let’s find a way to make it easier.”

“I can’t reject her.”

“Jackson…” he sighed.

“No, I can’t,” I said, feeling certain about this.

“What is your solution then?”

“Try to get through it. See where it takes me,” I said.

  • The Lycan King's Scarred Mate   Epilogue

-Daphne-Two years later.“Jackson?” I called as I walked into my mate’s office. We often spent time together in this space, but I had woken up late today. He lifted his head and smiled at me, his expression brightening as I entered.“Hey,” he replied, his smile growing wider the closer I got.I walked around the desk, grinning playfully. As he reached for me, trying to pull me closer, I playfully moved away, leaving him looking puzzled.“Can’t I touch you now?” he chuckled.“Not yet.”“Oh, are we playing?”“Yup, my own little special game," I admitted.“Is that the game where you tease me mercilessly with your mouth and tongue?” he asked with a smirk.“No," I replied.“Where you strip and drive me crazy?”“Nope.”“I’m getting confused now,” he said, making me laugh. “What kind of game are we playing?”“A guessing game," I revealed.“Okay,” he replied. “Is there a prize for me to win?”He smiled mischievously, and I nodded.“I’m all in, then," he said.“Tell me the first thing that com

-Jackson-Daphne had her fears, but after I recovered and her parents received a proper sentence locking them away for years, she stepped up to the role of luna. I had never seen her flourish like this before. It was as if a hidden side of her had been waiting to emerge, ready to show what she could truly accomplish. We offered the pack members a choice, and almost everyone preferred to merge rather than remain independent.Daphne and those who chose to join her moved to our territory, but she still retained ownership of her parents’ former land and house. She made it clear that anyone who wanted to stay could do so, but they would remain under both our control. Everything was going great between us.I watched from a distance as my mate returned from a late run. Daphne smiled brightly as she saw me on the porch, and I pulled her closer, kissing her deeply.“Hey,” I whispered.“Missed me?” she chuckled.“Very much. We hardly do anything but work lately,” I admitted.“Yeah, what else sho

-Daphne-Jackson had to undergo minor surgery, but the doctor assured me he would recover quickly. It wasn’t long before he woke up, and all of us were there for him. His eyes found me first, and he smiled sweetly.“Hey,” he whispered.“How are you feeling?” I asked.“Sleepy.”“Yeah, the drugs are wearing off slowly.”“Mmm, wonderful,” he murmured.Jackson’s parents moved closer, and I let them have a moment with him as I motioned for Roman to follow me out into the hallway. We stopped a little further away from the others.“I can’t believe they did this,” I said, my voice low but fierce.“How do you want to handle it?”“I want them in jail until they die! If I weren’t such a peaceful person, I would hunt them down myself and end them!”Roman smiled at me, a proud look on his face. Confused, I glanced at him.“What?” I asked.“I just never heard you speak about them like that before.”“Yeah, well, they haven’t tried to kill my mate before. Those bastards!”He nodded slightly. “I will m

-Jackson-I was on the ground, bleeding and completely beaten. I had fought before—had my fair share of bruises and close calls—but this felt personal. The pain was different. I wasn’t sure how many had attacked me, but the unmistakable scent of lycan filled the room, signaling that these were no ordinary wolves. I had managed to take down one of them, who now lay motionless not far from me, but the others loomed above, and I couldn’t understand why they had stopped kicking me.But suddenly, the door opened, and I saw polished shoes approaching. Straining to keep my eyes open, I let them wander up to see Daphne’s father standing before me.“You’ve caused me a lot of problems,” he accused.I tried to speak, but all I could do was cough up blood.“I need to have you removed so I can bring my daughter home.”Hadn’t he already tried to ruin her with those rumors? Why would he want to kill me now?“She… is… mine,” I croaked.“Not for long.”I watched in horror as one of the others handed hi

-Jackson-Daphne was initially scared as we began to dance, but when I asked her what it mattered what other people thought, something shifted in her. She started to enjoy our night. I led her through two dances before we finally joined the party and began to mingle. Not many people wanted to talk to us, but I knew some individuals would never be swayed. They thrived on drama and reveled in the rumors, but we wouldn’t let that bother us. Daphne and I were happy together, and nothing could ruin that.“I see my parents,” Daphne mumbled as she sipped her drink. After a while, we had retreated to the bar to enjoy some time together.“You want to talk to them now?” I inquired.I knew it was the smart move, but Daphne shook her head.“Not yet.”“Well, how about you wait here while I go to the bathroom for a moment, and then we can face them?” I suggested.“Yeah, let’s wait a little. I’ll be right here,” she assured me.I leaned closer and kissed her before downing my drink, then I walked awa
