Bella's POV

"Damn him!"

The vase left my hand and exploded against the wall, raining fragments across the floorboards. I stood frozen, chest heaving, watching the mess I'd made. My fingers hadn't stopped shaking.

And the part that really got under my skin? I knew exactly why.

I could tell myself a hundred times that it meant nothing, that I didn't care, and it wouldn't matter — Kattie's voice kept looping through my head anyway. That satisfied little smile. That triumphant tone.

"I satisfied hi

Bella's POV"How far is the archive?" I asked.Jesse paused — barely a beat — but I caught it, and so did my wolf, and neither of us said a word about it out loud, just noted it and moved on."Not far," she said. "About half a mile north. There's an old caretaker's cottage at the edge of the Greywood border. The records are kept in the cellar."Half a mile north. Farther from the palace. Farther from Thor. Farther from my two guards, who hovered at the edge of my senses — near enough to reach me, but not near enough to hear what was being said.My wolf had gone quiet in that particular way she did when she was turning something over carefully.*Should we trust her?* I asked her silently. She gave me neither a yes nor a no. What I got instead felt like a complicated shrug — which, oddly, felt more truthful than a clear answer would have."If I come with you," I said slowly, "and there's no archive, or someone's waiting for us there...""No one's there, Bella. I promise you.""Your prom

The building came into view through the trees, looking defeated. It crouched low and wide in the darkness — this was the "keeper's house" Jesse had mentioned, though the term flattered it. The windows had been boarded up from inside. The roof dipped on one side where something had caved in long ago and stayed that way. Weeds choked the path to the door, grown thick and tall in the way that only happens when no feet have disturbed them in years. My wolf stopped pushing forward. She wasn't backing away. She simply froze, dropping into a wary stillness, like a cat flattening itself before choosing whether to flee or hold its ground. I felt her shift like a sudden chill.Something is wrong here, she said.I already knew. I'd known since the shadow. But I kept my breath steady and my expression blank and I didn't stop walking, because blind flight was riskier than cautious steps, and my two guards were still hidden among the trees — if I stayed calm, so would they."This is it?" I asked, k

Bella's POVThe snap of the branch faded into silence. We both went rigid. Jesse's gaze darted toward the dark treeline, then back to me, and I caught her expression shift into something complicated — a flicker that wasn't quite fear and wasn't quite guilt, gone before I could fully read it.My two guards had already repositioned. I heard, rather than saw, them slip deeper into the trees, their footfalls swallowed by the brush. My wolf hadn't stopped trembling. It wasn't the sharp, alert shudder of a predator sensing danger. It ran deeper than that — the kind of tremor that comes from recognizing something old and wrong, the way animals freeze before a storm that hasn't yet appeared overhead. That name, she kept repeating. That name, that name, that name."Jesse," I said quietly, my eyes still locked on the trees. "Was that someone of yours?""I came alone," she said. Her voice held steady, though her hands didn't. "I swear I came alone."I studied her for a long three seconds. My wol

"He — yes. I mean—" She pressed a hand to her mouth, steadying herself. "He didn't threaten me outright, if that's what you're asking. But you don't refuse Ronan, Bella. You don't say no and simply walk away. He made it very clear what became of people who stopped being useful.""And the people who stayed useful?" I asked. "Did they get comfortable positions? Access they had no right to? Did they get—""Yes," she cut in. "Yes. All right? Yes. I got protection. Privileges. I told myself it was survival — maybe at first it was — but at some point it just became what I did." Her hands trembled openly now. "I am so sorry, Bella. I know that means nothing—""Not yet, it doesn't," I said. "Keep going."She looked at me with something raw in her expression — genuine remorse, or a convincing act — and I held still, trusting my wolf's instincts over my own memories in that moment. She's frightened, my wolf said. More than just of you."The delays weren't only carelessness," Jesse said, voice d

Bella's POVI sat on the edge of the bed for a long while before opening it.The letter rested in my hands, Jesse's handwriting looking back at me — that same looping script I'd recognized since we were twelve, sneaking notes to each other during pack meetings we were too young to attend. My thumb passed over the unbroken seal. The Moonstone crest. Dark red wax pressed into the shape I'd trusted my whole life.My wolf made that sound again — low, unsettled, like she was peering over the edge of something with no visible bottom.Open it, I told myself. It's only a letter. But my hands disagreed with my head. They stayed still for another full minute. Finally, I broke the seal. The paper was thin — Jesse's usual choice when writing in haste. Her words came quick and crowded, the letters leaning forward as though racing each other down the page.Bella. I know you don't want to hear from me. I know I don't deserve this. But please, just this once, listen — what I need to tell you can't wa

Thor's POVSable's full report came in Friday night.I read it behind a locked study door — something I rarely bothered with, but the opening pages made privacy feel necessary tonight.Ronan and Jesse. Sable had laid it out with her usual precision, a clean timeline stretching back much further than I'd braced for.Not months. Years. Five of them.Jesse's first contact with Ronan's network went back five years — a financial arrangement tied to Moonstone's trade routes, small leaks of information about the pack's weak points funneled north in exchange for quiet, untraceable payments. It began small: shipment schedules, administrative details, low-grade intelligence that meant little alone but, gathered over time, sketched a full map of Moonstone's operations and vulnerabilities. Then it escalated. The financial sabotage Bella had uncovered — the diverted medicine, the drained cooperative funds — all required someone with intimate knowledge of the systems Bella herself had built. Jesse

Bella's POV “My father's pack was wealthy when I came to yours, why would I depend on you??" I muttered against his lips, sounding breathier than I wished, "I'm not some fragile egg, you know." "You don't need to be so kind. Bella's POV I forced my legs up the stairs of the council house. It was the only place I could think of coming to, in order to unwind. In order to breathe without feeling like my chest was collapsing in on itself.I collided into someone, almost losing my balance, but a hand brushed over my back i
