The cold iron collar was digging into my skin, but I refused to look down. I wasn't going to let Beta Marcus see me break.
"Five hundred thousand gold coins!" Marcus yelled, his loud voice echoing across the fancy ballroom. He slammed his hand on the podium, flexing his wolf pressure to scare everyone into bidding higher. "She might be a useless Null who can’t even shift, but she knows how to act like royalty! She’ll make a great servant!"
Laughs broke out across the room. People from all the powerful packs were here, enjoying the show.
I bit the inside of my cheek until I tasted copper. Let them laugh. They thought I was just some powerless orphan girl. They had no idea I was the one who spent every night secretly reading and fixing the old pack treaties Marcus used to make his money. I knew every secret in this room.
"Six hundred thousand!" Alpha Cassian called out, stepping up with a nasty grin on his face. He looked at me like I was something stuck to the bottom of his shoe. "She can clean my stables during the day and stay in my room at night."
Marcus grinned, his eyes lighting up with greed. "Sold to Alpha Cassian!"
Cassian walked up the steps toward me, pulling out a silver ring to lock the deal. He stopped right in front of my face. His breath smelled terrible.
"Look at me," Cassian growled, grabbing my chin hard.
I stared right back into his eyes and didn't blink.
"You really think you're getting a rank?" Cassian laughed. He let go of my chin and turned around to face the crowd. "I, Alpha Cassian, reject this pathetic creature! I'm not buying her to be my mate or my Luna. I'm buying her as a slave!"
A few people gasped, but most just laughed. Rejecting someone before the contract was even signed was the ultimate insult. Marcus didn't care at all; he was still getting his money.
I swallowed the lump in my throat and kept my voice calm. "A slave? Be careful, Alpha Cassian. Sometimes the things you throw away end up ripping your throat out."
Cassian’s face turned red. "What did you just say to me?" He raised his hand to hit me.
I didn't flinch.
BOOM.
The heavy wood doors at the front of the room exploded into pieces.
A sudden, terrifying weight crushed down on the room. It was so strong that half the Alphas dropped straight to their knees, gasping for air. Even Cassian froze, his hand shaking in mid-air.
A tall man walked through the smoke. He wore black armor, had dark hair, and his eyes were a bright, dangerous gold. Behind him were twenty heavy-armed guards.
King Valen. The Lycan King. The most feared man on the continent.
The whole room went dead silent. Nobody dared to move.
Valen didn't even look at Marcus or Cassian. His gold eyes went straight to me.
He walked across the room with slow, heavy steps. When he reached the platform, Cassian practically tripped over himself trying to back away.
Valen stopped right in front of me. The scary pressure that was suffocating everyone else suddenly faded around me, feeling more like a warm blanket.
He reached out and snapped the iron collar off my neck with two fingers. It hit the floor with a loud clang.
Marcus rushed over, sweating bullets. "Y-Your Majesty! I'm sorry for the mess, this girl is just a Null servant we were selling"
"Shut up," Valen said, his voice quiet but terrifying.
Valen looked down at my face, checking my bruised chin and my hands. He unclipped his thick black cloak and wrapped it over my shoulders.
Then he turned to the crowd and spoke loud enough for everyone to hear:
"She isn't a servant. And she isn't wolf-less." Valen drew his sword, pointing it right at Marcus. "She is the lost heir of the First Lycans. And as of tonight, she is my Queen."
Valen didn't move. He stood so close I could feel the rapid beat of his heart right against my shoulder. The heat coming off his body was overwhelming, wrapping around me like a warm blanket in the cold room."A warning?" his voice was quiet, dark with tension. "What kind of warning?"I looked back down at the silver writing on the old paper. The symbols seemed to glow a little brighter under my eyes, almost as if they recognized the silver blood running through my veins."It says your ancestors didn't lose their magic because of a disease or a bad winter," I explained, tracing my finger over the ancient lines. "They made a deal. Five hundred years ago, the First Lycans locked away a dark energy deep underground to save the realm. But the deal required a price every few generations; the ancient curse wakes up to demand the magic back."Valen’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. "And my family kept it a secret.""They had to," I whispered. "If the other packs knew the
The hallway was dead quiet.Valen kept a firm grip on my wrist as he led me out of the council room. He didn’t hold me tight enough to hurt, but his touch sent a warm, static buzz right up my arm.Four guards marched behind us. I could practically feel Lady Karen glaring holes into the back of my head, but I didn't turn around. We walked down a long, empty corridor. Outside the tall windows, the sky was already turning dark.Valen finally stopped in front of a set of huge wooden doors. The two guards standing outside bowed and opened them immediately."Leave us," Valen ordered. The guards didn't say a word. They just shut the doors behind us, leaving us totally alone in his private study. The room was massive, warmed by a fire in the corner. Bookshelves touched the ceiling, and a big wooden desk near the window was covered in messy stacks of maps and papers. The second the doors clicked shut, Valen let go of my hand. My skin instantly missed the warmth. He walked over to his desk and
The cold stone floor sent a chill right through the soles of my boots. Every step I took echoed off the high walls, making me feel like I was marching straight to my own death. Two guards walked ahead of me, their heavy armor clanking with every step. Two more kept close behind. They weren't escorting a guest to a room; they were walking a prisoner to a trial.“Keep moving,” the guard on my left growled.I swallowed the lump in my throat and forced myself to keep my head up. For eighteen years in the Ironmoon Pack, Beta Marcus had taught me to shrink back and keep my head down. He wanted me invisible, just a useless servant who stayed out of the way.But I wasn't in the Ironmoon Pack anymore.I looked down at my wrists, taking in the raw red marks left behind by the iron chains Valen had snapped with his bare hands. I wasn't just some nobody. I had the silver bloodline of the First Lycans running through my veins.“Breathe,” a soft, calm voice whispered in the back of my mind. It was
We rode through the night without stopping.I sat on a heavy brown warhorse right behind Valen, holding onto his waist so I wouldn't fall off. Every time the horse took a hard step, my chest pressed against his back, and that strange, warm energy from our mate bond flared up again. It was exhausting trying to fight it.By the time the sun started coming up over the mountains, the forest opened up into a huge valley. In the middle of the valley sat the Capital. It was a giant city built entirely of dark grey stone, surrounded by walls so tall they blocked out half the sky. At the very top, sitting on a jagged cliff, was the Royal Castle."Is that where we're going?" I asked, raising my voice over the sound of the horses' hooves."That's home," Valen said, his voice flat. "Or a cage, depending on the day."As we got closer to the main gates, I noticed small groups of citizens standing along the side of the dirt road. They were thin, tired-looking shifters wearing ragged clothes. When Va
"Hold my hand or stay in the dirt," Valen said. He sounded completely calm, even with all the shouting going on outside.I didn't argue. I just grabbed his hand. The moment our fingers touched, a weird spark of electricity shot up my arm, making my heart thump against my ribs.Valen kicked the carriage door right off its hinges. The heavy piece of wood flew into the dark woods, slamming into one of Marcus’s men so hard the guy dropped like a sack of rocks. We scrambled out of the broken carriage and stepped onto the damp grass.Five of Marcus’s heavy guards were standing over Valen’s injured men. A few feet away, Marcus was holding a loaded crossbow, looking at us with a nasty grin."Well, look at that," Marcus sneered, taking a step closer. "The big, bad Lycan King, crawling out of the mud for a useless Null.""She isn't a Null, Marcus," Valen said quietly. He stepped right in front of me and pulled out his sword. "And you should have brought more men.""I brought enough to collect t
The burning hit my arm like boiling water. My head spun, and everything went dark around the edges. A sharp, terrible pain ran up my arm and straight toward my chest.Nightshade poison was made to kill shifters almost instantly. For a human like me, it was game over."Lyra!"Valen’s voice sounded muffled and far away. He pulled me into the corner of the carriage, shielding me with his body as two more arrows crashed through the broken window and stuck in the wooden wall."Protect the carriage! Get the shooters!" Valen roared. Outside, swords started clashing, and people started shouting.Valen pressed his hand hard over my arm, trying to stop the dark blood from pouring out."Are you crazy?" he growled, his gold eyes wide with panic. "Why did you push me?""Because," I gasped, barely able to breathe, "you can't help me get revenge... if you're dead.""Be quiet." Valen closed his eyes, and a faint silver light started glowing from his palm as he tried to push the poison out of my skin.
