Chapter 4 - The Dagger

“Evangeline?” she felt her blood run cold, her eyes darting between the sharp blade and her cousin's livid expression “What are you doing here? What... What did you want to do with Hannah?” Anger rose in Deborah's voice when she realized why Evangeline could enter her best friend's room with a sharp weapon.

“You...” her cousin murmured, barely looking like herself, with that cold, glassy look “You're always trying to get in my way... But, not this time. Thanks to you, I will achieve even more than I expected tonight.”

Still with her face empty, Evangeline just remained looking at her for a few seconds, in total silence. When she began to raise the dagger, Deborah feared for herself and for her child, and prepared to try to find a way out of there, even if it was through the window, taking a chance on the ledges outside...

However, what Evangeline did was turn the weapon on herself, moving it towards her arm until a cut appeared there, staining the white nightgown she was wearing.

Just then, she screamed.

“Help! Help! Please, help!” Her voice was so shrill that Deborah’s eardrums seemed to split “Deborah was trying to kill Princess Hannah! Please, someone!”

“What...?!” Deborah gasped, but, before she could even get up from where she was kneeling, several guards and servants had already gathered there, their angry and accusatory gazes in her direction.

“What happened?” one of the soldiers held Evagenline’s shoulders protectively.

“Oh, Goddess, you are bleeding!” one of the servants approached, holding her arm “My Goddess, how was this woman able to do something like that?!”

“I only came to check on Hannah because I know how worried Iron is about her when he’s away.” Evangeline cried profusely, holding her arm as if she were about to faint “I went in and found Deborah standing over her, with this dagger in her hand. I tried to take it away from her, so she wouldn't hurt Hannah... But then she hit me.”

"No!" Deborah gasped “That’s not what happened at all! Evangeline was the only one who...”

“Shut up!” one of the guards growled, approaching her “You cursed whore! This is why the Goddess and the King hate you so much! How can you put your dirty hands on the princess and the King’s companion?”

“She can’t be left loose in the castle any longer!” another servant added “We need to lock her in the dungeons right now! What if our poor Evangeline was pregnant?! She could have killed Eclipsor’s heir.”

“Come to think of it, on the night of the invasion, the first one who was attacked was the princess, right?” one of the older guards growled “She never let anyone in her tower. No one but this girl. Maybe that’s why the Alpha imprisoned her here!”

“What are you talking about?” Deborah panted, despair stopping her breathing “Listen to me...!”

“Damn witch!” the servant who was supporting Evangeline shouted “It was you who betrayed us, wasn’t it? This is why so many of us were tortured, why the princess was cursed and why our lands are rotting! You were sent by the God of Discord to destroy us, that's why you never had a wolf!”

“Let’s kill her now!” one of the guards suggested, making Deborah’s head spin “Light a fire and offer a servant of Discord to the Goddess, as the ancients did! The Alpha will kill her anyway. At least we will have a chance to reverse the evil that was brought upon us.”

"No!" Deborah began to walk backwards, her hands falling protectively over her belly “You can't do that!”

“What should we do, Evangeline?” the servant questioned “In the absence of the King, you are second in command.”

“Evangeline...” Deborah looked at her cousin, her heart stopped “Don’t do that...”

“It pains me so much to do this to my own flesh and blood.” Evangeline whimpered, returning Deborah's gaze without wavering “But, Iron had already mentioned that he had decided to kill her, one way or another. He is disgusted by the bond between the two. Perhaps, if we kill her today, we will be doing our beloved king a favor, so that his wolf does not suffer more than necessary from her death.”

“Evangeline...!” Deborah growled, but it was too late.

The guards rushed toward her, not allowing her to take more than a few steps toward the window before her limbs were roughly held and her entire body was thrown to the ground, thick chains cutting into her wrists as they restrained her. Overcome with despair, she tried to turn around and scream about the King's son inside her, but a rough cloth was forced between her lips, silencing her.

“I will never forget such a terrible scene.” Evangeline murmured and, even without looking in her direction, Deborah felt that there was a smile in her voice “But, as much as it pains me, justice must be done. Let’s light a fire.”

Deborah stood completely still for a moment, trying to organize her mind and prepare herself for what was to come, instead of panicking. Unfortunately, however, this also gave Iron enough time to pull the window up, breaking the pure steel locks that held it in place. And, in the next instant, without Deborah being able to do anything to stop it, that man was already inside her children's room, staring at her as if she had pierced his chest and ripped out his heart.“You… You gave birth to cubs…” he mumbled, his voice sounding strangled as he looked around at the toys strewn across the floor and the beds with colorful sheets “Our cubs!”“No. My cubs.” Deborah rolled her eyes, focusing only on the destroyed window to avoid his gaze “And, thanks. Now my children will spend the night getting drafty and probably catching a cold…”“I saw them!” Iron growled, stepping closer to her as if ready to grab her arm “I saw their faces, especially the eyes of that little girl… My daughter…” he murm

“Oh, my sweet Goddess…” Dawn gasped, her body dropping towards the floor as they found themselves in front of the door to their family’s apartment, the hallways around them thankfully empty “I’ll never get used to this teleportation thing.”“Yeah, I guess so do I…” Deborah had to summon all her strength to hold her friend in place, even though her head was spinning like she was about to pass out “It always… Sucks the life out of me. But, hey, are you okay?”“I’m the one who should be asking you this…” Dawn lamented, staring at her with a mix of concern and pity “I mean, it seems like with each generation of my family our wolves go more dormant, so I’ll never really know what it’s like, but my father always says the feeling of finding your fated mate is overwhelming. I hate the idea that bastard almost let a pack of mad wolves burn you to death and now…”“Now my wolf still keeps me tied to him?” she laughed humorlessly “Don’t worry. He made sure to replace every good memory I had with r

The cold night air hit Deborah’s face like a slap when they finally reached the outside of the club. But, ironically, she felt like this was exactly what she needed. The smell of only humans, the modern streets around her, the night filled with the lights and sounds of the city. This was the human land. Her land. She was no longer part of the pack. She had nothing to fear, even if Iron was here now.She stood with her back to him, staring at the waning moon in the sky and waiting for him to start talking, but nothing happened. Iron remained where he was, the weight of his gaze on her back pricking her skin like needles. It was so ironic that, when she was still the shame of the pack, the girl who didn't have a wolf inside her, the attraction she felt for Iron seemed so much more genuine. Because it came from her heart. Now, all her wolf wanted to do was curl up around him and mate, but Deborah couldn't wait for this conversation to be over and to be able to put as much distance between

The club was everything Deborah had imagined it would be: hot, loud, and with a strong smell of booze that made her keen sense of smell twitch. The loud music seemed to make the floor vibrate, and with every step she took deeper into the dancing crowd and flashing lights, she could feel a new pair of eyes turning in her direction.“Hey, honey.” a man spoke nearby, his voice slurred from the alcohol “Are you free? I’d love to burn myself in a little flame like you…”“I think maybe we shouldn’t have invited Deborah. She’s stealing all the guys’ attention for herself.” Beth said, a smile on her face, but her voice more acidic than even she intended.“At least try to hide your jealousy, Beth.” Dawn rolled her eyes, seeming to be shouting at the top of her lungs to make herself heard “I’m disappointed in you. Is that really the kind of guy you want, with that kind of bad pick-up line?”“I’m not being jealous…” Dawn’s friend whined, pouting “I’m just saying… It’s hard enough to compete with

Deborah knew perfectly well when she was in a dream. She had learned that the hard way, after five years of dreams just like this one. Night after night, she found herself in that exact spot, sitting in that glade in the moonlight, with nothing else to do but stand there and stare at the wolf that had never stopped secretly tormenting her, despite the distance.Iron.It was always like that in those dreams: they would stand in front of each other, with only a few feet separating them, but they could never touch. As if there was an invisible barrier between them, preventing Deborah from getting closer or even away from him. All she could do was stand there, staring at him, until she woke up. He couldn't speak, though. Something about the determined expression he wore sometimes gave Deborah the distinct impression that he tried, but never succeeded. Which was a good thing. She didn't need any more memories of the past. His face was enough and, if she could choose, she would forget even
