Mine and Sebastian’s argument plays in my head on repeat.
I don’t know what I’m going to do.
I only have two days left before I turn 18 and Maddox and Cassian discover that I’m their mate.
Sebastian refuses to come with me. I don’t understand why, it’s not like our lives are perfect here. We’re both slaves to the Alpha and Luna.
We used to live at the Southern River Pack. We were close in age and have been best friends all our lives. When our pack got attacked, we worked together to hide and survive.
The Lightning Pack came in too late. Our attackers were long gone and they looked over the shambles of our pack to find survivors.
Our parents didn’t survive so when the Alpha and Luna found us they took us in and put us to work. They treat us well. We have a roof over our heads, food to eat, a place to sleep, and we have never been mistreated.
But I was meant for more than being their assistant, cook, maid, whatever thing they needed!
Truly, I was meant to be Luna. I’m supposed to be Alpha Ethan and Luna Anna’s sons mate! But… that’s not going to happen. I can’t let it.
I huff as I put my hair up, I need to figure out a way to talk to Sebastian today. I know that he is angry with me, but… I have to convince him. His life is at stake and he means too much to me.
Honestly, I don’t know if I can live through him dying again. I already lost him once and it was the worst period of time in my life.
I rush downstairs and head straight to the kitchen to get the Alpha’s family’s breakfast ready. Everyone has a particular thing they want, but my priority is always Alpha Ethan and Luna Anna. They have someone else that takes care of the twins.
Once breakfast is done and delivered, I start the laundry. I have a little bit of time before the laundry is ready to be switched over. I think I have enough time to go to a quick training and to sweep and mop the floors.
Sebastian always attends the early trainings, maybe I could be his partner and get a chance to speak with him.
The moment I walk onto the field he glares at me. I gulp, he’s never been this upset with me. I don’t understand why the fact I want to leave angers him so much. He says something to someone and then walks away.
I breathe out, I want to chase after him but I realize that I don’t get that option as the trainer starts the session. Maybe I can work out my frustrations.
My heart stops when I see Maddox walk out to the field. He smiles at our normal trainer Mr. Hanson and says, “I’ve got it, Mr. H. You can take a break.”
Mr. Hanson grins as he says, “Well, I can’t say no to that! Thank you.”
Maddox nods his head as Mr. Hanson walks away and then claps his hands together as he looks over our group. His eyes look at me with an intensity that makes my knees weak. I could swear that I see recognition in his his eyes, but I must be going crazy. It’s not possible, I’m not 18 yet.
He looks over the group and says, “We have an uneven number of people so one of you will have to partnered up with me.”
His eyes roam over the group again before landing on me. The corner of his mouth twitches up and he says, “You’ll work with me.”
My heart stops. He has to know… right?
Maddox
I wasn’t planning on training this group. But I saw this girl leave my father’s office and immediately felt drawn to her.
I don’t know who she is or what her name is. I want to learn more about her. I think she could be my mate… maybe she just hasn’t come of age yet.
So, I took over the class because I knew it would give me a chance to get closer with her. I go over instructions for the moves they need to learn and then everyone starts sparring with their partners.
The girl stands there and tries to avoid my gaze. I can’t help but smile, most girls do whatever they can to catch mine and my brother’s attention, but this girl, whoever she is… she’s different.
I remark in a low tone, “You can’t fight well if you’re too busy looking at your feet.”
Her eyes flicker up to meet mine and I’m in shock of her beautiful cobalt blue eyes. I’m too stunned to move or react when she walks over to me and quickly does the move as I instructed and adds her own flare as she flips me. I fall onto my back, knocking the wind out of me. I’m sure everyone around us is watching, but she doesn’t care. She even smirks as she comments, “Didn’t anyone tell you that staring is rude? Besides, it obviously distracted you from fighting well.”
I can’t help but smirk as I reach out and grab her ankle and pull her to the ground. I quickly pin her arms to the ground as my legs are on either side of her body.
This feels oddly familiar.
An image fills my head of her blonde hair sprawled out on the ground, her neck arched as she let out a delicious moan, and the overwhelming urge to mark her fills me.
She clears her throat and my cheeks redden slightly as I realize my length has grown against her. I get off of her and say, “Uh, you shouldn’t let your guard down.”
Her face looks flushed as she scrambles to her feet and she nods her head, “You’re right. I need to work on that.”
I nod my head as I look around and I’m pleased to see that the others seem to be ignoring us. I get their attention and give the next instructions.
The girl doesn’t speak to me anymore, there’s no more playful banter and she seems uncomfortable.
I don’t push the matter, I don’t want to make her uncomfortable.
The training session goes by in a blur and as soon as it’s over she rushes to leave. I jog a few steps to catch up with her and I say, “It was nice training with you.”
She nods her head and gives a tight lipped smile and I say, “Well, I’ll see you around then, angel.”
I wink at her before walking off and she stays frozen in place behind me. I can’t help but smile as I leave her, I know in my gut that she feels the same way I do. I need to find out who she is and more importantly, I need to know when her birthday is.
CharlotteMy heart is racing as I rush up to my room and create as much distance as I can between me and the training grounds. When I enter my room I slam the door shut and lock it behind me. I place a hand on my heart as I will for it to slow down but it doesn’t. Out of nervousness I begin to pace back and forth; I have to calm down, I can’t calm down!I should’ve known I would never be able to escape Maddox and Cassian.Maddox knows. He called me ‘angel’ he always called me angel. He knew, they must’ve somehow brought me back and are testing me to see if I’d stay loyal to them.I breathe out, the thought is crazy. This whole situation is making me crazy. If Maddox knew who I was there’s no way that he would’ve let me go.No, he wouldn’t have. Maddox is fiery and passionate, and he would’ve taken me aside and made out with me and demanded that I spend more time with him because he can’t stand to be away from me. But… he didn’t do any of that. He must not know.I finally sit on the be
SebastianOnce again Charlotte isn’t coming in to work. I know what she’s doing. She’s spending the day prepping for the trip that she wants us to take tomorrow. But deep in my heart I hope that the trip will never come to pass.Charlotte has been my closest friend for my entire life. She’s the only thing I have left from my life back at the Southern River Pack and if I’m being honest… I want her to be my mate. She’s beautiful, smart, funny, and we get along well. Life would be so much simpler if we were just meant to be together. If we were humans and not werewolves I would’ve made a move on her years ago. But we both have a destined mate out there waiting for us and just in case my destined mate isn’t her, I didn’t want to ruin our friendship.I walk up to her room to bring her lunch and she smiles at me. I set the food down and she starts talking about our trip tomorrow. I watch her and feign my interest. Can she really not feel the connection that I have always sworn was between u
CharlotteRelief flooded through me when Sebastian lightly knocked on my door and walked inside. He has a small smile on his face as he asks, “How’s the day been, Char?”I smile, “It’s fine, and I’m all ready for our trip tomorrow!”He nods in acknowledgement, but I notice his lips are pressed together. He’s still cautious, but I recognize that this is just a part of who he is. He doesn’t jump headfirst into decisions, he likes to take his time and think everything through.I am pushing him outside of his normal limits and I have to respect the fact that we will butt heads during this journey. I look at him and say, “We’re going to leave first thing. As soon as the sun is up!”His eyebrows crinkle and he says, “I thought you liked sleep.”I nod, “I do, but I also like adventure.”“Okay, but adventure can wait for a decent hour.”I huff and walk over to Sebastian and tug on his arm and say, “Come on, Seb. It’s my birthday, shouldn’t we do what I want to do?”He looks at me annoyed and s
CharlotteI can’t sleep. It’s impossible.Mine and Sebastian’s argument plays in my head on repeat and anxiety fills my body as I’m nervous that Cassian and Maddox might find me while I sleep. When I finally fall asleep, my dreams are filled with the twins.I dreamed of the first time we met. As a slave, my birthday wasn’t a big deal. Although Luna Anna would acknowledge me on my birthday there wasn’t anything else that would happen. So, I went to the dining room to set up the food for the Alpha and Luna. I liked to do it before they would come into the room, but it was a different kind of day. The moment I walked in I could feel the thick tension and I looked up to see Maddox and Cassian staring at me like I was their possession. I looked at Maddox first and I knew… I was his. I heard Cassian’s growl and I stumbled back because when I looked at him I knew that I belonged to him too. When I had stumbled back they both thought I was trying to leave and they rushed towards me as they gr
SebastianI watch with a heavy heart as Charlotte climbs out the window and disappears. I couldn’t go after her… I mean, I guess I could have. But… it’s not the right move for me.By the end of three days, I’m sure Charlotte will be back here. She doesn’t remember much of our childhood, but I remember everything. As the Beta’s son, I learned all about the pack and specifically about rogues. Rogues are horrible and only the worst end up rogue.Rogues… those disgusting, vile wolves that were part of the cause that made us lose everything. The last thing I want is to end up like them.I huff as I leave her room and go to the kitchen to find something for an early breakfast. Once I eat I could go for a run while I wait for the training session to start. I don’t know what else I could do with my time.Training is tricky for me, I’m naturally talented and one of the best warriors that the Lightning Pack has, but I don’t want them to know who I am.Our parents were careful so that no one woul
CassianMy heart feels like it’s in my throat knowing that my mate is out there by herself and will be shifting at some point today. Maddox is determined to find her and surprisingly, he isn’t arguing about me coming with him. I expected that he would be more possessive over her.I am possessive over her, but not surprised by the fact we share a mate. It’s rare for twins to be in a high ranked position, but it’s not uncommon for twins to share the same mate.We both rush from her room and down the stairs only until our father’s voice rings out, “Where do you two think you’re going?”We turn to face him and I say, “To find our mate.”His eyebrow raises and he shakes his head, “You can go on a wild goose hunt to find her tomorrow or the next day. Don’t you two remember that today is the day that we are announcing that you are two separate Alphas? And that we will be officially dividing the people among you?”“She could be in trouble, we’re leaving now.” I answer in a simple matter-of-fa
CharlotteI felt relieved when I finally made it to the Southern River Pack, the hours of running had been worth it. It’s in horrible shape and it’s sad to see my old home in such disarray, but I feel happy being here. I’m away from Cassian and Maddox and Sebastian should be safe since I’m gone.I find my old home and I’m relieved to find out that it hadn’t been burned to the ground like so many other homes. My sense are on high alert as I slowly enter the house. There are so many rumors that surround these pack grounds, I know I have to be careful. But at the same time, I can’t help the feeling I have like I… I finally returned home. It didn’t matter that the home has no electricity or running water, all that matters is I’m free. Plus, there’s a river nearby and I could live off the land if I need to, especially once my wolf comes in. I have time to figure out my next steps.I put my bag on the ground and bring out my blanket and make myself a small pallet on the floor. I take a de
CharlotteMy eyes flicker back and forth between Maddox and Cassian as they argue. A small part of me wonders if they’ll be so caught up in their argument that I could run away. But… I know that won’t work. They’re Alphas… they’d be able to catch up to me easily.I clear my throat and both of their heads snap towards me and I say, “What if I rode on one of your wolves half of the way and the other wolf the other half? Then it would be fair.”They glance to one another, considering my words for a moment. This is how they were last time. They took my words into consideration for a few days before they stopped listening to me entirely.I say, “Or we could walk and walk for a little bit first.”Maddox shakes his head no, “You walked here on your own and who knows when you’ll start shifting. We need to get you back to the pack so you won’t be in danger.”His eyes flicker to Cassian and his lips are pressed together before he says, “Ride on Cassian’s back. Your safety is the most important
