Chapter 4: The First Touch

Three days passed while I sat in that room with the fire burning and the snow falling outside the window, and Leandro did not come near me, did not send word to me,and did not give any sign that he remembered I existed at all.

I counted the hours as the sun rose and set behind the clouds that never seemed to leave this frozen land, and the fire burned low and was relit by servants who entered without speaking, who left food, water and warm clothes that I had not asked for and did not trust.

I did not eat the food they brought, I did not drink the water, and I did not sleep in the bed with its soft blankets and its soft pillows, because sleep was a weakness and eating was a risk and drinking could be a death sentence if someone had decided to poison me while I was not looking.

Instead I sat against the headboard with my back to the wall and my eyes on the door, the way I had learned to sit when I was a child and my stepmother roamed the halls looking for someone to hurt, and I waited for something I could not name, for the torture to begin, for the king to return, and for someone to tell me why I was still alive when all the other sacrifices had probably died within hours of arriving at this terrible place.

The nobles laughed outside my door every night, their voices carrying through the stone walls like the howling of wolves, and I heard everything they said because the room was so quiet and my ears had learned to listen for danger.

"The human whore is still breathing," one of them said on the second night, and I could hear the disgust in his voice, the way he said the word human like it was something rotten. "The king must be going soft."

"Soft is not the word I would use," another voice replied, and this one was lower, meaner, with the kind of voice that belonged to someone who enjoyed hurting things. "Have you seen the way he looks at that thing, like it matters, like it means something to him?"

"Disgusting," the first voice said again, and I pressed my back harder against the headboard. "A human, a sacrifice, something that should have been killed on the first night, and the king is treating it like a guest."

"He will kill it soon enough," the second voice said, and I could hear the smile in his words. "Give it time, and give Ramiro time, and that human will be dead before the snow melts."

I did not believe them, because I did not believe anyone, but I could not stop thinking about the king's eyes, gold and burning and afraid, because the king had been afraid of me, a human sacrifice, a nobody, and that made no sense at all.

On the third night, the door opened without warning, without the sound of footsteps in the hallway or the click of the lock being turned, just the creak of the hinges and the rush of cold air from the corridor, and then I saw him standing in the doorway.

Leandro was not the same man I had seen in the throne room three days ago, because his hair was disheveled like he had been running his hands through it for hours, and his shirt was untucked and wrinkled, and his eyes were not gold anymore but dark, so dark, wild and hungry with something else I could not name.

He was drunk, I could smell it from across the room, with Lycan wine so strong that it could kill a human and strong enough to make a king stumble, and when he looked at me, he looked like a starving man who had just seen bread for the first time in years, like a drowning man who had just seen air, and like a monster who had just seen the one thing in the world that could save him from whatever darkness that lived inside his chest.

He crossed the room while I sat frozen against the headboard, with my back to the wall, my hands shaking and my mind screaming at me to run, to fight, and to do something, but I could not move because my body had forgotten how, and because I had spent so many years learning to stay still when danger came that I no longer knew how to do anything else.

His hands grabbed my shoulders, as his fingers starts digging into my skin hard enough to leave bruises.

His breath was hot on my face, smelling of wine and something else, something wild that I could not name.

Then his mouth was on mine, so hard, desperate and wrong. Because this was not a kiss, this was an attack, and this was a man who did not know how to be gentle, trying to take something he did not understand.

He kissed me like he was dying, like I was the only thing keeping him alive, and his hands tore at my shirt until the fabric ripped and the cold air hit my chest.

His hands were on me then, so rough, warm and shaking.

I felt every finger like a brand on my skin.

He traced down my chest, over my ribs, across my stomach, and his touch was not gentle but it was not cruel either, it was something in between, like something hungry, desperate and afraid.

I could smell him. He smelled of wine, smoke and something wild.

I could hear his breathing, fast and ragged, and I could feel his heart pounding against my chest where our bodies touched.

His fingers reached the waistband of my trousers and stopped, and I held my breath because I knew what came next. I had heard the stories, and i knew what the Lycans did to the humans they were given.

But he did not go further.

His hand just stayed there, trembling against my skin, and I could feel the heat of him, the want of him, and the way his whole body was shaking with the effort of holding back.

His forehead pressed against mine, his eyes were closed, his lips were parted, and he looked like a man who was fighting a war inside his own chest.

"I cannot," he whispered, and his voice was broken. "I cannot do this to you.”

But his hands were shaking, I could feel them shake.

I could feel the tremor in his fingers as they touched my skin, and I realized that he was not cruel and he was not gentle. He was something in between, a man who did not know how to want something without destroying it, and a monster who was terrified of his own hunger.

And then he stopped.

He pulled back so fast that I almost fell forward.

His chest was heaving, his eyes were wide and his hands were still shaking.

He looked at me like he had just woken up from a nightmare and could not remember where he was.

"I cannot," he whispered, and his voice was broken, and cracked, like glass that had been shattered and glued back together one too many times.

He stood up and walked to the door without looking back, as his boots echoed on the stone floor.

The door closed behind him, the lock clicked, the fire crackled and I was alone again.

I touched my own lips with fingers that would not stop trembling, and they still tasted like him, like snow, smoke and something wild that should not be cage.

I did not know why that made me feel safe when it should have made me feel terrified, I did not know why my heart was still pounding when the danger had passed, and I did not know why I was not afraid when I should have been more afraid than I had ever been in my life.

But I was not afraid, not really. Not the way I had been afraid of my father, my stepmother, the guards and the chains.

And that terrified me more than anything else, because it meant that something inside me was changing, and I did not know what I would become when the change was complete.

  • The Lycan king Forbidden Mate   Chapter 43: The Healing Begins

Sergio's POVThe days after the confession passed differently than the ones before.I noticed small things that I had never noticed before. I noticed the way the morning light turned the snow on the windowsill into something that looked like diamonds, the way the tea tasted different depending on which servant brewed it, and the way the guards outside my door shifted their weight from one foot to the other when they thought no one was watching.I had spent so much of my life hiding, making myself small, and not noticing anything because noticing meant being present, and being present meant being vulnerable. But I was tired of hiding.I started keeping a small notebook on the table beside my bed. Every morning, I wrote down one thing I was grateful for. Some days it was the warmth of the fire, and other days it was the taste of honey in my tea. Once, it was simply the fact that I had woken up without a nightmare. It felt strange at first, like I was pretending to be someone I was not.

  • The Lycan king Forbidden Mate   Chapter 42: The Confession

Sergio's POVLeandro noticed I was still shaking. The tea was gone, and the morning light had grown brighter, but my body had not stopped trembling, because the thoughts of the nightmare still clung to my skin like frost, and I could not shake it off no matter how hard I tried.Leandro watched me with those golden eyes, and I could see the worry painted all over his face. The dark circles under his eyes looked deeper than before, and his hair was still messy from the night, and he looked like he had aged years in just a few hours."You need to warm up," he said. "You are still cold."I looked down at my hands, and they were pale, and my fingers were trembling. He was right. The nightmare had left something behind, a chill that had nothing to do with the temperature of the room."I will prepare a bath," he said. He stood up and walked to the door. "Stay here."I almost laughed, because obviously I was not go

  • The Lycan king Forbidden Mate   Chapter 41: The Morning After the nightmare

Sergio's POVThe morning light was pale and grey when I opened my eyes. The fire had died completely, the room was cold, and my body was stiff from lying in the same position for too long. I did not remember falling asleep, and I did not remember Leandro leaving.I actually thought he had left, but I was wrong. He had not left.He was sitting in the chair across from the bed, and his golden eyes were watching me, and his hands were wrapped around a cup of tea. His hair was messy, and his shirt was rumpled, and there were dark circles under his eyes that had not been there before. He looked very tired. More tired than I had ever seen him."You are staring," I said. My voice came out cracked, due to the shouting last night.Leandro did not smile. He just stood up, walked to the bed, and he handed me the cup of tea. The warmth seeped into my cold fingers, and I held it tightly, as I breathed in the steam

  • The Lycan king Forbidden Mate   Chapter 40: The Nightmare (Sergio's Father)

Sergio's POVWe walked to my room together, and his hand stayed in mine the whole way.The guards bowed their heads as we passed, the torches wavered as light breeze flowed through the hallway, and the shadows danced on the walls.Leandro stopped at my door, and he looked at me for a long moment. I thought he might say something, but he did not. He just squeezed my hand, let go, and turned to walk away.I watched his back as he walked away, and his footsteps echoed in the hallway. Then I took a deep breath, went inside, and I closed the door behind me, and I lay down on the bed. The sheets were cool against my skin, and the fire was low, and the room was quiet.I closed my eyes, and I listened to the sound of my own breathing, as I waited for sleep to come.It came faster than I expected, and with it came the nightmares. The dream came without warning, and it swallowed m

  • The Lycan king Forbidden Mate   Chapter 39: The Silent Comfort

Sergio's POVI found Leandro in the library again that evening, the main library, not the hidden one.He was sitting in a chair by the window, with his golden eyes staring out at the snow, and his hands were limp in his lap. He looked tired, his shoulders were tense, and I could see the weight of everything pressing down on him.He did not look up when I entered, but I knew he knew I was there. His breathing changed, just a little, and his hands curled into fists on his knees.I walked to the chair beside him, and sat down.Neither of us spoke, and the only sounds were the ones from the fire as it crackled in the hearth, and of the wind, as it howled outside the window, rattling the glass in its frame. The silence between us was heavy, and thick with everything we were not saying. He knew I had found the book. He knew I had read about Aldric, about his father, and about the betrayal that had shaped hi

  • The Lycan king Forbidden Mate   Chapter 38: The Truth About the Betrayal

Sergio's POVI found Elara in her chambers the morning after I discovered the hidden library. She was sitting by the window, with a cup of tea in her hands, and her old brown eyes were staring out at the snow. She looked tired, and older than I had ever seen her, and I wondered if she had been waiting for me to come. She did not look up when I entered, but she spoke anyway."You found it," she said. "Didn't you?"I closed the door behind me, walked to the chair across from her, and I sat down. The fire crackled in the hearth, and the shadows danced on the walls, and I could hear my own heartbeat in the silence."The hidden library," I said. "The book about Leandro's father. About Aldric."Elara closed her eyes, and she set her cup down on the table beside her. Her hands were shaking, just a little."I was wondering when you would find it," she said. "I hoped you would not, but I knew you would.
