Lucas couldn’t get his eyes off her, he had somewhere to be later in the day, that was to check the effects of the raid that had happened the previous night and finally merge it into his pack. A guard walked in at that moment and bowed stiffly to him.
“Alpha Lucas.” He said politely.
“What is it?” Lucas harshly didn’t want to be interrupted by anyone whenever he was the damsel in front of him.
“Some of the pack members from the pack we raided yesterday survived, you said women and children were not to be killed. So what do we do with them?” The guard asked.
At the mention of the pack, Riley’s senses sharpened and she kept her face straight so he wouldn’t realize that she was eager to hear what was being said.
“Take them in,” Lucas replied and the guard looked at him in surprise.
“You mean…into our pack, Alpha Lucas?” He asked, which attracted a stern stare from Lucas.
“What did I tell you about asking me dumb questions, Bob? I said fucking bring them in, all of them. We’ve got space at the orphanage, there’s a building behind it, keep them there. I’ll know what to do with all of them later. By 6 pm, gather them all in the courthouse, by then I would have decided their fate.” Lucas said.
Recreantly, the guard bowed and left the room.
“Dumbass.” Lucas cursed under his breath.
Riley was quite stunned by his attitude towards the guard’s inquisitive nature. He was probably one that was quick to anger when his orders were not followed immediately. She stared at the side of his face as a husky silence hung above them, then when he turned she looked down immediately.
“You were in a very dangerous place last night, you could have been taken for one of those peasants from that despicable werewolf pack. You shouldn’t roam about freely in the woods if you do not have protection or, if you cannot protect yourself.” Lucas said, staring at her with interest in his eyes.
“I had no idea about what was going on there, I’m just a commoner. I didn’t know there was an establishment such as that so deep in the woods.” She lied again, praying silently that these lies wouldn’t catch up with her as time went on.
She wanted a new chapter, away from her past life. She wanted to forget everything, if she could forget the fact that she was a werewolf, she didn’t mind. As long as she never went back to the wicked hands of Shawn, as long as she never went through all that torture again, she was fine.
Damn the mate bond for leading her into the wrong hands, Shawn might be her mate but he’s also a complete bastard. He had nothing now, his pack was gone and so was his illustrious father. At least he couldn’t harm her here, but could she trust this stranger? It wasn’t just about what her eyes saw, she didn’t know him well enough to trust him. She couldn’t trust anyone, she had to leave, go away from here, and start all over again.
He frowned, “A commoner? Does that mean you’re human? Purely human?” He asked.
She hesitated because she knew that whatever she was going to say now was going to go a long way in determining her relationship with this man. Yet she couldn’t tell him about who she truly was, she couldn’t tell him what she was too.
She nodded and said, “Yes, I’m a human.”
“So, what about your parents? You have parents right?” He asked, he had other things to attend to but she captivated his interest so much.
He wondered how a commoner, a human with no supernatural powers could hook him so deeply, he took a liking for her already. And it wasn’t just that, she did something to his body that made him want her. Although he had only known her for a few hours, the sight of her alone sent a sizzling feeling up his spine. When his eyes regarded her, they did with rapt curiosity and interest, he wanted to know everything about this lady.
“I do not have parents, they died a long time ago.” She replied in a low voice, at least that bit was true. She realized that that was the only truth she had told him since they started talking, what if he discovered everything?
“Really? That’s a shame for them to leave a girl like you all alone.” He said and picked out a cigarette from his cigarette pack and lit it. He wasn’t usually like this, but he felt sympathy towards her.
“It’s not their fault, my mom died while she was having me. My dad was involved in an accident when I was nine. They were just unlucky, especially my mother.” She said, staring at nothing in particular as a rare flood of sadness swept through her body.
“I know what it feels like to lose your parents, you get used to being alone over time. At the end of it all, you’re always alone.” He said, puffing out smoke into the air. “Do you smoke?” He asked, offering her a cigarette.
She shook her head, “I don’t.” Do ladies smoke? She wondered. She thought about what he said, she had foster parents after all, and even though they were a constant pain in the ass, at least she wasn’t entirely alone.
“So who was l collecting those herbs for?” He asked.
“What herbs?” She blurted out, forgetting the lie she had told earlier.
He raised an eyebrow at her and that was when she remembered, oh shit! She thought with a growing feeling of panic, she needed to remember her lies.
“Oh…those herbs…I wasn’t feeling too well and I have a little knowledge about herbs…so…” Her voice cracked under the intensity of his inquisitive stare. “Since I had no money to…to get actual drugs, I decided to go looking for herbs.” She replied
For a long, very uncomfortable moment, he stared at her in silence and it sent her heart racing. There was only one thought on her mind,
“Has he figured out that I’m lying?”
Suddenly, he rose to his feet, there was a different air about him that seemed cold. “I have to leave now.” He said.“Me too.” She also said and that made him look sharply at her. “What do you mean by 'me too'? Where do you plan on going? That whole place is gone and whatever settlements that might be around there have been destroyed.” He said. “Then I'll go somewhere else.” She replied and rose to her feet, that had been her original intention.Actually, no, what she thought when Shawn escaped with her was that he was rescuing her so they could go somewhere else and start a new pack. The idea had thrilled her, then she had dreams, dreams of becoming the Luna of the Greenwood pack, but not it was gone. She had no dreams left, all she wanted to do was go away, go far away from all of it. “I’ve taken you in as a captive,” Lucas said firmly. “You have no parents, you have no money, you’re staying here.” He said and when she opened her mouth, he added stiffly. “And that’s final.” H
All Riley wanted to do was remain in the comfort of the large, sparkling toilet. She didn’t want to go out there and meet those faces again. She was in an unfamiliar territory and the only person she knew and was comfortable with for the meantime was the Lycan King. The maids kept on gossiping and suddenly, heavy footsteps approached them from a corridor.“What the hell are you maids doing there?” A thick masculine voice asked.Riley’s heart started thumping fast, she thought it was Lucas but this particular deep, masculine voice was unfamiliar. She concluded that it wasn’t Lucas but it carried almost the same authority Lucas’s voice possessed.“Good morning, Beta Dolph.” The ladies said in unison and curtsied and he nodded at them. “What are you all doing here? From afar it was looking like a gabfest, aren’t you on duty?” The talk handsome fellow who served as Lucas's beta/ second in command asked.“We are on duty, we are taking care of the king’s guest.” One of them replied.Dolph
They sat in awkward silence for a long while, Dolph staring at her impassively while she struggled to meet his probing stare.“You take pride in intimidating people in such situations, don’t you Dolph?” A voice boomed throughout the large, luxurious room as Lucas walked in.Dolph got to his feet with a sly grin on his face, “I like to make people understand that we aren’t so friendly and welcoming.” He replied. “Your guest is one timid lady.” He added, casting a look at Riley and then back at Lucas.Lucas stared at Riley and she got to her feet, then bowed. “If I took you out of the woods, you’d be scared out of your damn pants in a pack like this.” He said to Dolph.Dolph rolled his eyes, “Lucas, we have to talk, something’s come up. And it’s not looking too good.” He said, when he saw the look of admiration Lucas looked at Riley with, he added in a firm voice. “It’s important.”“Alright, alright,” Lucas said, his voice somewhat annoyed. “Let’s go to my study, bring that bottle of w
Lucas stared at him for a while, wondering if he could trust Dolph to keep the secret felt like telling him, but he thought against it immediately. “I don’t know yet, it shouldn’t be any of your business, leave her alone for now.” He replied and Dolph stared at him with a baffled expression on his face. “Oh boy, Lucas, you’ve got to be kidding me right now. Of course, it’s my business, as far as it concerns this damn pack, it’s my business.” Dolph replied. “I want a cigarette,” Lucas said, blowing air on his cheeks. Dolph squinted at him, “And I want an explanation.” “Get me my cigarette pack, and I’ll give you an explanation, if you are simply obedient, we both get what we want,” Lucas replied and relaxed in his seat. “Your cigarette pack is right next to you,” Dolph said with a bored expression on his face. “Get it for me,” Lucas said slowly with a cheeky smile. Dolph rose to his feet in annoyance, then when he reached out to pick up the cigarette pack, he suddenly
Lucas was pacing up and down in the living room when Dolph walked in with a smile on his face. “Why are you smiling?” Lucas asked immediately, taking it as a bad sign. “Why are you pacing up and down?” Dolph asked. “Answer me first!” Lucas snapped and a look of surprise jumped into Dolph’s eyes. “Okay, okay, relax man. I took her to the other side of the pack, the dark harbor. You should have seen the look of shock on her face, I tried so hard not to laugh. What was she expecting? A palace?” Dolph laughed mockingly. “All these lowly wolves don’t even know their fucking place, especially the females, huh?” He laughed again. Lucas ran his fingers through his hair and his face contorted with a look of worry. “So you left her with the other violent captives?” He asked, his voice was unusually unsteady. “Yeah, but it seemed like you wanted me to give her some special treatment. Although you didn’t voice it out, I saw it in your eyes.” Dolph smiled, pointing at him. “So I left her i
Dolph was so shaken by the incident, the first question that crossed his mind was, was she dead? He genuinely hoped not, if it was any other captive, he wouldn’t have given a fuck, but this one. This one seemed to have found favor in the eyes of Lucas and if she was dead, then Dolph was in a hell lot of trouble. He dropped to his knees and put his head on her chest. He released a long, loud sigh of relief, she was still breathing, she wasn’t dead.“For fuck’s sake, this doll almost made me piss in my fucking pants!” He exclaimed aloud, relaxing a bit but his heart was still thinking heavily. He had to get her out of there immediately. The first person he should have thought about contacting was a doctor, but he was in a hurry to draw Lucas’s attention to the situation. He picked her up effortlessly, she was easy to carry and he made his way out of the pack quickly. With panic he walked briskly, at some point he ran, then slowed into a walk again. His pace continued like this until he
Dolph joined him in the corridor a few minutes later, he brought a cigarette case with him.“I figured you might need one of these.” He said and handed the case to Lucas. “Not now, Dolph,” Lucas replied without looking at him.Dolph nodded and lit one for himself, it was rare for Lucas to reject a cigarette and he wondered why he looked so tense. How was a mere human making him so agitated? Normally Lucas didn’t even give a fuck about the captives here.“What’s the doctor saying?” Dolph asked.“Nothing, he’s still running checks,” Lucas said and suddenly looked at him inquisitively. “Did you do anything to her, Dolph?”Dolph was startled by the directness of the question, “Of course not, Lucas.” “You didn’t hit her?” Lucas asked again.“No, I didn’t. I found her unconscious.” He replied, his tone somewhat annoyed by Lucas’s strange persistence. “You don’t believe me? I found her unconscious. I feel like I’m being interrogated or something.” “Alright, enough,” Lucas said with a frow
Lucas wasn’t the type that lied or twisted his words, he had a nature of being veracious and direct. Although it was difficult when it came to Brenda, he didn’t make any exceptions, he already knew what she wanted to ask and he wasn’t planning on lying. “Who’s she?” She asked, her death stare probing into his eyes. “Riley,” He said. “Do you want another drink?” He asked. “Who’s she?” Brenda asked again, her face deadpan. “A girl I met and rescued in the forest during yesterday’s attack.” He said and got up to fix a drink for himself. “What attack?” She asked. “We took down another pack yesterday.” He replied. This conversation only had one way, she was the one asking the questions while he only provided the answers. Her eyes flashed with admiration, Lucas never lost a fight and she took pride in the fact that he was her fiancé, but then she remembered the angry role she was playing. “So this girl, playing” “Riley.” He corrected me. Her eyes flashed at him, “I don’t ca
