Chapter 1

In my third year as Don Enzo’s wife, and my third year deemed insane, I discovered the name on his marriage certificate wasn’t mine. It belonged to his so-called adopted sister.

While Enzo gloated, he had no idea I had already pulled the financial backing I brought to the marriage, or that I had sent a message to my brother.

What he didn't know was that three days ago, my mind had fully recovered.

I tossed the box of antacids into the roaring fireplace. My maid, Sofia, steadied my arm and walked me back to the main house.

Three days ago, the best doctor in Solaria secretly flew in to administer the final antidote. I could think and perceive everything perfectly now.

The doctor advised me to wear a black silk veil for a few more days to prevent sensory overload. The black veil became my best disguise.

Just as I stepped into the grand hall, Enzo approached, trailing the faint scent of gunpowder and cigars.

He grabbed my wrist. “Stella, what are you doing in the front hall alone? Where are your bodyguards?”

I let him hold my arm, playing the part.

Three years ago, these same calloused hands had lifted me from a pool of my own blood.

To save him, I had taken a bullet meant for him during an assassination attempt by a rival family.

The severe head trauma had shattered my mind, leaving me in a state of deep psychosis.

He knelt at my bedside, making a blood oath to give me the grandest mafia wedding and swearing he would suffer a thousand cuts if he ever betrayed me.

He gave me a motorcade of dozens of armored cars.

He put me in charge of all the Valenti family’s legitimate businesses and internal affairs.

The entire underworld called me Donna with respect.

I pulled my wrist from his grasp. “You’re flushed, Don Enzo. Sofia, fetch a cold towel.”

Enzo sank into the leather sofa and loosened his tie. “Some capos were fighting over territory. Gave me a headache.”

I feigned a sluggish fumble for a glass of bourbon and pushed it toward him. “The capos are only looking out for the family.”

“I heard you entertained a special guest at the club today.”

Enzo’s hand froze mid-sip. The crystal glass hit the table with a thud.

He leaned his head back against the sofa. “What special guest? Just a few partners on the smuggling routes.”

“Why are you worrying about these things? The doctor said your brain can’t handle the stress.”

From behind the black veil, I maintained my “vacant” stare at his face. “I had someone review the family’s assets today.”

“I’m preparing for the Saint’s Festival next month. And while I was at it, I wanted to see the family trust agreement.”

Enzo shot to his feet, his suit cuff knocking over the glass of bourbon. The amber liquid spilled across the carpet.

He stared at the stain, his voice tight. “Why the sudden interest in the trust?”

I settled back into the sofa, my posture relaxed. “We’ve been married for three years, and I have yet to attend a family roundtable as the official Donna.”

“It seems my name isn’t on the trust list yet, is it?”

“With the Saint’s Festival approaching, it’s about time we made my position legally official, don’t you think?”

Enzo knelt before me, taking my hands in his and sighing.

“Stella, it’s not that I don’t want to give you the official title.”

“It’s the old guard. They’re prejudiced against your foreign blood. They think your family is just a bunch of merchants from some backwater port, not part of the life. They’re holding up the paperwork.”

He lowered his head, his cool lips brushing against my knuckles. “Just give me a little more time.”

“Once I take control of the East Coast ports, I’ll have absolute power. Let’s see which capo dares to stand in my way then.”

I looked down at him.

I had used the Moretti family’s financial network to launder his money. I had funneled a fortune to bribe his political connections.

I thought I was paving the way for our criminal empire. It turns out, I was just building a future for him and Clara.

I nodded in agreement. “Fine. I trust you.”

Enzo stood up, satisfied. “That’s my girl. You just focus on getting better. If you want any jewelry, just tell the bookkeeper.”

He reached out to caress my face, but I turned away. “I’m tired. Sleep in the study tonight.”

Enzo’s hand froze in mid-air. His eyes narrowed, a dark look clouding his features.

He slowly pulled his hand back, his tone turning cold. “Then get some rest. I have to check on a shipment at the docks tomorrow. I’ll be back late.”

I gave a simple acknowledgment.

As he disappeared around the bend of the staircase, I summoned Sofia.

“Go to the Crimson Gallery in the city and find the manager, Antonio.”

“Tell him the Moretti heiress requires a full audit.”

Three years later. On a winding coastal road in Solaria, the sea breeze was briny, the waves crashing below.I was in the driver’s seat of a red convertible Ferrari, one hand resting casually on the steering wheel. The Mediterranean wind whipped my long hair and red silk dress, making me look like a dancing flame.Behind me, the roar of a black Lamborghini engine grew louder as it hugged the road like a phantom. It was my brother, Dante. He slammed on the brakes, and the two supercars came to a stop side-by-side on the cliff’s edge.“Just got the final report from our informant in the southern jungle.” Dante took off his sunglasses and handed me a lit cigar.I took the cigar, inhaled deeply, and exhaled a thick cloud of white smoke.“What’s the news?”“About that piece of trash, Enzo.”I flicked the ash from the cigar. “What, did he become the new king of the jungle down there?”Dante scoffed. “Kingpin? Please.”“I heard that in the first month after he was handed over to the drug lord

A month later. Veria City Maximum Security Prison. The visitation room reeked of disinfectant and despair.Enzo, wearing a glaring orange jumpsuit, sat behind the glass window, his face unshaven. For the past month, he had endured inhuman torment. The rivals whose turf he stole had bribed the guards, and they made his life a living hell. The evidence against him was irrefutable, his concurrent sentences set in stone. The court had already ruled in the first hearing. All Valenti assets seized. Three consecutive life sentences. The heavy iron door opened. A guard shoved him roughly into the visitation chair.A pair of stiletto heels, encrusted with tiny diamonds, came into his view.Enzo slowly lifted his head and saw me.I wore a black trench coat, looking down on him as if he were a stray dog.“Stella…” A flicker of hope ignited in Enzo’s dull eyes. He scrambled to the glass.“You came to see me? Does this mean you’ve forgiven me?!”He snatched the receiver, his voice desperate and ple

When the federal agents cuffed Enzo, he was in a daze. He, an ambitious mafia Don, had his entire operation dismantled simply because of a debt.Out of consideration for his public profile, the agents didn’t hood him right away. They merely asked him to step into an armored vehicle to “assist with their investigation.”It was enough to bring the Valenti family to ruin. That night, every business under his name was raided and shut down.Even more damning were the black ledgers that had been submitted.Money laundering, smuggling, contract killings. Each one a life sentence. Before, with the Moretti financial network providing cover, no one could find any loopholes. Now, I had exposed everything. Every blood-soaked transaction was laid bare. The local mafia commission was furious and immediately ordered all ties with the Valenti family severed.Enzo was thrown into a maximum-security prison. At the Silver Lake villa.Clara lay on the luxurious European-style bed, her face ashen.Without

I stared at Enzo’s face, twisted by extreme panic and rage.“Does Don Enzo really believe that asking me to come back is some great act of mercy?”I walked to the leather sofa in the center of the gallery and sat down, picking up a glass of strong bourbon.“Unfortunately for you, I’m not interested in such a pathetic favor.”“You!” Enzo took a threatening step forward. “Stella, don’t you forget, I am your husband!”“Husband?” I slammed the crystal glass down on the marble table. “Enzo, have you forgotten whose name is on the marriage certificate in the City Hall archives?”Enzo’s face paled.“That was a political move to solidify my power! I swore a blood oath to give you the grandest wedding a Donna could ever have!”“You know your family could give me financial support, but you’re still just a merchant’s daughter from some backwater town. You’re not inner circle. I had to deal with the old guard here. Secretly marrying Clara, the illegitimate daughter of the Russo family, was the onl

Enzo swallowed his pride and went to the district capo who had mocked me.He had been one of Enzo’s closest allies.Seeing his car, the guards outside the capo’s stronghold uncharacteristically raised their guns.“Don Enzo, why the long face? You look like a stray dog,” the capo said, chalking his cue by a pool table.Enzo clenched his jaw. “Friend, I’ve got some internal trouble. Stella threw a tantrum and walked. Can you lend me some men and fifty million to tide me over?”The capo stopped chalking his cue.“The lady left?” He dropped the chalk, his eyes full of mockery. “And she took her Solarian resources with her?”Enzo could only nod.The capo let out a short, sharp laugh and shook his head.“Enzo, it’s not that I won’t help. But after the scene at the Saint’s Festival, the whole underworld is talking. They’re saying you faked a marriage to scam the Moretti family, that you rode a woman’s coattails to the top while keeping your whore on the side.”Enzo’s head snapped up. “What?”

“Enzo, I may have been mentally broken, but I was never a fool.”Signed: Stella.Lying next to it was a copy of the marriage certificate bearing Clara’s name, the one he had hidden in his secret vault. The hand holding the paper began to tremble violently.A cold wind blew in through the open window, sweeping the worthless paper onto the marble floor.Just then, one of the family’s top lieutenants stumbled into the room, collapsing to his knees, his voice strained.“Don! It’s a disaster! The family’s accountants and bookkeepers, they’re gone! All our secret accounts are frozen! And the armory has been cleared out!”A loud ringing filled Enzo’s head, as if he had been shot. His ears buzzed.“What did you say? Say it again!” He grabbed the man’s collar and hauled him to his feet. The capo was sweating profusely, his teeth chattering in fear.“Don, the Donna… she drained the family’s liquid assets! The casinos, docks, artworks, everything bought with her money. She didn’t even leave a pai
