Evelyn’s POV We leave the inn in the early hours of the morning, two days later. I hold my son close against my chest, wrapped carefully in light cloth. I wear a light, soft brown wispy gown with a brown veil over my face, the traditional cloth of new mothers as Zahra says. We’re going to travel deeper into the capitol, to Zahra’s home which is closer to the palace. As we pass the market, I see vendors setting up their stalls; laying out fabrics and baskets, arranging spices into careful mounds of red, gold, and brown. I inhale deeply letting the various scent wash over me. It still surprises me how much life exists here. After the desert, I expected something harsher. Something emptier, a desolate land. But this place breathes. Above us, cloth canopies stretch from building to building. It reminds me of a picture from one of Laudia’s human storybooks, what’s it called again…? The one where a princess falls in love with a prince that has a floating blue friend….

  • The Mad King's Mate   CHAPTER FIFTY-THREE: Motherhood

Evelyn’s POVThe prince is getting on my nerves.Seriously.My body reacts before my mind does.I sit up too quickly, wincing as a dull ache pulls through my lower abdomen. Healing is not complete. Lycan healing is fast but not fast enough to heal the injuries of pregnancy.I groan as I make my way to his small wooden crib. I literally just put him down…….I gather him into my arms.Alright,” I murmur, though my voice feels dry from lack of sleep. “I’ve got you.”He quiets almost immediately. That still surprises me,the fact that my presence calms another human being. The only person my presence has ever calmed is Pip and that is after she has given me a round of verbal bashing. That always calms her down. But calming my son… brings an entirely differ feeling. It’s freeing, like running in a meadow filled with flowers.I named him…..Arzhel. My bear prince. My carefully crafted prince.A prince I really need to feed, I think when I see tears welling up in his eyes again.I adjust my

  • The Mad King's Mate   CHAPTER FIFTY-TWO:

Evelyn’s POV:I always thought birth would feel like something happening to me.Like an event. Something huge.It is, but… fuck, it's painful.I gasp, clutching Zahra’s shoulder.“It’s too soon,” I whisper, though I know it isn’t. “We just arrived.”They had lowered me onto a low bed layered with woven blankets. My dress has been peeled away quickly, replaced with loose cloth. My legs tremble as another contraction builds. This one is stronger.I cry out before I can stop myself.I grip the edge of the mattress as the pain crests and falls, leaving me shaking.“I’m not ready,” I cry. “Please goddess, I'm not.”Zahra kneels between my knees, her expression calm but focused. “You are, Evelyn.”I feel the pressure low. It's unbearable and sharp. My hips feel as though they are being pulled apart from the inside. I arch, breath shattering.“It hurts,” I chose. It really did hurt. Like a constant pressure on my bladder. Like my bones down there were shifting, rearranging to accommodate t

  • The Mad King's Mate   CHAPTER FIFTY-ONE: DRY LAND

Evelyn's POV Whoever thinks that a vacation in the desert is fun… is a fish.A big one at that. All pun intended… the desert should be deserted. The heat is oppressive, pressing down on me like I did something bad to it. The sands constantly try to blind me while the wind tries to uproot me from my feet. All-in-all, I think the desert hates me.And I hate it back. So, fuck you too desert.Seriously though, I don't know how the nomads do it. Waking up every morning feels like a death sentence to me. I wake each morning disoriented, my body stiff and my mouth dry. It's torture! But aside from the dreadful heat and the fact that the sun seems to want to be best friends with me… the journey so far has been… not that bad. After resting for a while to regain strength, I emerged from the tent. Although Zahra had given me her word about them not hurting Pip, I was a bit skeptical. It's not everyday you get to meet a pixie from another realm. But, she was thriving. She had already made frien

  • The Mad King's Mate   CHAPTER FIFTY: WELCOME TO THE SOUTH

Evelyn’s POVIt's dark, a dark wormhole surrounding me.Where the hell am I?!I wake to smoke and heat. Not the choking kind that itches the back of the throat, but something softer, a bit sweet, weaved with herbs I don’t recognize.I let out a groan as I blink sand out of my lashes. The world swims into focus slowly.A low canopy of fabric arches overhead, held up by carved wooden poles. Beads and small bones hang from the supports, clicking softly whenever the tent breathes with the wind. The walls are fabric too; heavy, sun-faded fabrics. Symbols are stitched to the fabrics, symbols I don’t know but somehow recognize. Memories flashes through me mind; the tunnels, light, the desrt…. Panic flares within me.I try to take a deep breath but inhale too fast and cough. My throat feels raw, my mouth dryer than sandpaper. Water.I need water. Thus thought causes me to try to sit up.A mistake. Pain shoots from my hips up my spine, down my thighs and settles deep in my belly. My vision

  • The Mad King's Mate   CHAPTER FORTY-NINE: TUNNEL TRAVELLER

Evelyn’s POV Somebody kill me!Should I weep blood before the universe hears me?Damn you goddess and whatever shitty gods that live with you in the freaking stars. What time is it?With no way to measure, time seems insignificant. I stopped trying to count the days after the first few cycles of waking, walking, resting, and eating. If I had to guess, I would say weeks. One? Two? Three?Fuck you, stupid god of time for making something so fickle that determines everything. To be honest, telling the time is the least of my problems down here.At first, every step terrified me.The dark is thick, the kind that swallows sound and makes your footsteps echo too loudly. Even my enhanced vision is barely of any help. I learnt quickly to move slowly after I almost took myself out of this world by tripping into a small chasm. Thank the heavens I caught my footing in time. I don't think the world I'd ready to lose me yet.The tunnels are not empty too.Something I discovered on the third… or

Evelyn’s POV I feel the moment the ward gives way as I pass. The magic that has pressed against my skin for months flickers, and then is… gone.My knees buckle.I grab the stone wall of the corridor, breathes tearing from my chest. Freedom.A sudden deafening roar shakes the ground. The corridor

Evelyn's POV:The first sound I notice is the music. The palace is too loud for a place built on secrets.Even hidden behind magic, I can hear it, the thrum of drums, the swell of voices, the distant howl that marks the beginning of the mating ceremony. It slides through the walls like smoke, vibra
