By the time he came out, the negotiations were over. His ships had been pushed back. No other vessel was available to redirect immediately. Dane ordered the perishables divided among the boats first, then called the people whose deliveries would not arrive. Even when they heard his name and kept shouting, he listened to the end.

That night, the terms he had refused lay beside the notice for his next police interview in his bedroom. He put neither away.

***

On her fourth morning on the island, the first thing Leo saw when he lifted the fabric was a pink bear. Evelyn and the nurse were writing down the changes in his responses overnight. Moving rooms hadn't made his nightmares disappear. He had woken crying twice the night before.

Evelyn looked down too. One slipper was halfway off Marco's foot. The burly head of security tried to push his heel into it, then gave up.

“These were in storage.”

“I didn't mean you had to change into those particular shoes.”

“He told me to bring the quietest ones.”

The guard behind him spoke in a small voice. When Marco turned, he pointed to the toes of the slippers.

“The bears looked quiet...”

Having finished his explanation, the guard looked down at his own black socks. Marco glanced at them but chose not to pursue it today.

Evelyn pressed her lips together. Leaning against the wall, Dane turned his head. His shoulders moved once.

Marco stopped himself from taking the slippers off. Leo was watching them. Still holding the fabric up, he studied the bear's face.

Marco turned his toes toward the boy.

“Planning to wear those outside too?”

Dane asked. Marco drew his foot back.

“Only indoors.”

“Wear something that fits.”

“We had to find yours first, Boss...”

Every eye went to Dane's gray house shoes. Evelyn suppressed a laugh as Leo lifted the fabric farther. Marco abandoned his attempt to remove the slippers and turned the bears toward the child.

***

At lunch, the nurse took charge of Leo's meal. He left enough of the fabric open to see Dane. For a while, Dane watched the gap, then turned toward the way Evelyn had gone.

***

Evelyn washed her hands at the sink. As she folded back the sleeves of her borrowed clothes, a clean towel appeared in front of her. Dane.

“You'll need more clothes.”

“I'll have mine brought over. And my charger.”

“We can collect them if they're sent to the port. I won't send anyone to your home.”

Evelyn sent Olivia a list of what she needed. Beneath it, she added the time she would speak to the police station. Instead of looking at her screen, Dane pointed to a table at the end of the corridor.

“Have you eaten?”

“Leo has.”

“You.”

Evelyn looked at him. He pointed again to the small table at the end of the corridor. There were 2 bowls on it.

“Someone was still in the kitchen.”

Evelyn checked the time. There was a little while before she had to call Olivia again. At the sight of steam rising from the hot bowls, she felt how empty her stomach was.

She pulled out a chair and sat. Dane took the one opposite.

“Do I look like someone who survives by skipping meals?”

“All I've seen you do is stand.”

Evelyn picked up her spoon. As the broth went down, her shoulders lowered of their own accord. Dane was watching.

“Why are you staring?”

“I wondered if you'd stay that angry while eating.”

“I'm less angry now. Eat before it gets cold.”

Evelyn chose the crusty end of the bread. Dane's hand stopped.

“Were you going to eat this too?”

“You only give the boy the soft pieces.”

“I like this part.”

He turned the plate toward her. Evelyn looked at his eyes before his hand.

“Planning to memorize everything?”

“I've missed a lot. What you wear. What you eat.”

His eyes were different from when he asked about the boy's condition. Evelyn drew the piece of bread she had cut toward her side of the plate.

“You could ask. Instead of deciding things yourself.”

Dane leaned toward her across the table.

“Then what do you want to do right now?”

“Eat my lunch slowly. Sit and eat yours too.”

She tipped her chin toward the empty bowl. Only then did Dane pick up his spoon. Evelyn didn't get up first.

After a couple of mouthfuls, he set the spoon down. When she looked at him, he said he had a call coming in. His hand was quick to turn the vibrating phone facedown.

“Answer it.”

“This isn't something the boy should hear from his room.”

He went to a window a short distance away. Evelyn tried to continue eating, then heard his voice.

“Have another boat collect the refrigerated goods first. Load them on its return trip. Even if we've already paid the unloading fees here.”

Evelyn looked up as she chewed. He kept talking about moving the cargo before recovering the money. Some of it would spoil if they waited for the slot his uncle had secured ahead of them.

He asked only who would receive it and where it would arrive. When someone suggested passing the responsibility for his absence during questioning to a subordinate, he cut them off.

“I told them to bring her. Don't push it onto the man who arranged the car.”

When the call ended, he returned to the same seat. He still hadn't touched the part of the bread she'd chosen.

Evelyn followed the movement, then looked up.

“People really do listen to you.”

“Except you, Doctor.”

“And the boy.”

Dane laughed. Evelyn lost the words she had been about to say. Even after his laughter faded, he was still looking at her. Only then did she lower her gaze to her bowl.

Picking up his coat, Dane told Marco to secure the entrance where they would meet the medical staff first. He didn't tell him to put more guards on his boat. Evelyn remembered the instructions from his recent follow-up.“If anything physical needs doing there, leave it to someone else.”“Marco and I have divided it up. My job is to get the door opened.”While he checked inside his coat, Evelyn took his arm. Hearing that he'd divided the work hadn't eased her worry. Instead of pulling his coat away, he turned toward her.Dane pressed a deep, warm kiss to the forehead of the woman holding his hand.“I'm going to the mainland. I'll confirm when I can return and call you.”Evelyn didn't release his coat. She was glad he hadn't promised an impossibly short time, but that made her more anxious too.“Come back alive. Dane, that's not a request.”

Dane didn't take out his phone as he watched her. Only when Evelyn smiled first did his arms tighten. From the far side of the greenhouse came the sound of Leo's spade digging in the soil. Evelyn looked over Dane's shoulder toward the boy. When Leo lowered his head to his own game, she turned back to Dane too.As the wind strengthened, Evelyn went to close the vent. Instead of reaching ahead of her, Dane supported the handle she was working. The bottom wouldn't shut properly, and they pressed close together to push.“Do you stick this close every time you're working?”“Didn't realize I was working right now.”He answered from right behind her. Evelyn released the handle and turned. The frame behind her left no room to retreat, but the space beside her was clear. Instead of stepping out through the opening he'd left, she picked a small leaf from his coat collar.“Don't say you wan

“It's good news.”Even after saying it, she couldn't smile. She remembered the family's shoes as they waited in the corridor for an explanation. The question the child had asked her to pass on to his dad before surgery—she still hadn't spoken it in front of his father.“They'll have gone back to the same house today too.”Evelyn's breath broke. Dane came closer. She started to hide her face, then caught his shirt instead. As she bent forward, she lost her balance. Dane reached around her waist and back. When her weight fell against him, he moved a foot back and braced himself to keep them both from sinking to the ground. His shirt smelled of soap. Unable to raise her face, Evelyn held his collar.Supporting her weight, Dane moved toward the bench. Evelyn sat with him without lifting her head. Her wet cheek pressed against his shirt.“Dane... I... the child...”She couldn't continue. Dane rested a hand against the back of her head, then lowered it to her back when she shook her head.E

On the day the meeting ended, Evelyn went to her accommodation on the mainland. Only after unpacking did she tell Dane she'd arrived. He acknowledged it but didn't add his usual question about food. The next day, the hospital explained the surgical course she would be reviewing.Further questions came, and she wrote out the stages she remembered again. She also arranged to give a statement to the investigators. Submitting material that challenged the foundation's allegations hadn't ended every process at once.Adrian maintained that there had been nothing wrong with the record changes. He no longer said Evelyn had left the scene after surgery. Instead, he said their accounts of the decisions at the time differed. While the wording shifted little by little, no one apologized first. The foundation amended part of its official statement. It withdrew the explanation that had given the impression Evelyn had fled with 300 million Westmere marks in research funds and announced that the accou

After speaking, Evelyn let out a long breath. She worried she might have raised her voice, but she didn't apologize again. The external reviewer organized the points that needed checking. Missing records. Conflicting times. How the order had been passed on. Papers that had tried to close a child's death quickly under one person's name opened again into several questions.Chairman Richard Cross, sitting at the back of the conference room, asked to speak. They mustn't prolong the family's suffering, he said. Evelyn bit her lip, knowing how true that was. Words supposedly for the family were being used to mean they should stop looking at the records. The bereaved family's representative asked,“Then why didn't you provide the originals the family requested?”The chairman replied that the scope of disclosure had needed review. The representative read the date of the family's request. Before Evelyn had been removed from duty. Only today did she fully learn that the family had been waiting

After Evelyn went back inside, Dane continued the call. The other man now wanted to reconcile all the dates together. Dane asked why the answer he'd sent earlier had changed. From the next room came the sound of her name. Evelyn pressed her headphones more firmly into place. She couldn't wait for him to make room for her. She had to answer the allegation that the medication order had been hers. On-screen, Adrian Cross was preparing to begin with his own account again. Evelyn wrote down a time she remembered differently within that sequence. This time, before he could speak, she requested a turn to ask her question.9:45 a.m.As the meeting resumed, the moderator put newly received material on-screen. An edit history the IT staff member who had received the preservation request had secured separately.Adrian looked at the legal department employee. The employee read the filename as though seeing it for the first time too. Evelyn pressed her hands together harder in her lap.“There are
