The clock on the wall of the editorial room showed a little past eight in the evening. Flora Vance exhaled a long breath, then forced closed the laptop on her desk. Overtime was a daily staple for a Senior Editor at a major publishing house in Manhattan, New York, like herself. Tonight, however, her fatigue vanished into thin air. There was a joyful spark she couldn't hide.

"Hey, Nessa, want to head home together?" Flora asked as she slung the strap of her crossbody bag over her shoulder.

Vanessa, her best friend and the Managing Editor who was busy checking drafts in the next cubicle, looked up. "Can't, Flo. I have a dinner plan with my cousin. Go ahead."

Flora smiled, leaning her body over Vanessa's cubicle. "Alright, I'll go first. Don't forget to accompany me for the wedding dress fitting tomorrow. Don't you dare be late!"

Vanessa laughed cheerfully, flashing a thumbs-up. "Got it, Bride-to-Be! Say hi to Devon for me!"

Hearing Devon's name, Flora’s chest warmed up. There were only days left until she officially became that man's wife. Devon Cross was a sincere, gentle man who always treated her with the utmost respect. Imagining their future kept Flora's smile intact, even as she stepped through the quiet, dim, and cold corridor of the office basement parking lot.

The moment Flora opened the door to her white sedan, a bad premonition suddenly gripped her. The atmosphere in the basement felt chilling, as if a pair of eyes were watching her from behind the darkness. Flora turned quickly, scanning the area. Empty. There was only a row of cars parked in silence.

Trying to ignore the goosebumps rising on her skin, Flora immediately got into the car and stepped on the gas, cutting through the New York streets that were beginning to clear out.

The disaster came without warning.

To avoid traffic, Flora took an alternative route through a quiet, poorly lit street. Suddenly, from the front and back, two black SUVs sped forward, instantly cutting off and harshly blocking Flora's car's path.

Screeeeeeeych!

Flora slammed on the brakes with all her might. Her body was thrown violently forward. Her heart raced frantically. Before she could even process the situation, several heavily built men dressed completely in black jumped out of the SUVs.

One of them aimed a short-barreled firearm straight at the windshield, while another pounded on the window next to where Flora sat.

"Get out!" the man barked. His voice was deep and threatening.

"H-help! Who are you?!" Flora screamed hysterically, locking the car doors from the inside. With hands trembling violently, she tried to reach for her phone on the dashboard to call Devon.

CRASH!

The man outside smashed the car window with the butt of his weapon until it shattered completely. The door was forced open from the outside. Flora's small body was forcefully dragged out until she fell onto the asphalt. Flora resisted, kicking and screaming as loudly as she could, hoping another vehicle would pass by.

"Let me go! You bastards! Who are you?!"

"Shut up!"

A handkerchief with a highly pungent chemical odor was suddenly clamped over Flora's nose and mouth. Flora tried to hold her breath, but the substance was too strong. Within seconds, a massive dizziness attacked her brain. Her vision blurred, the rest of her strength was completely paralyzed, until finally Flora's consciousness collapsed into darkness.Elsewhere, inside the luxury penthouse of a five-star hotel looking directly out at the twinkling lights of Manhattan, a man stood arrogantly near a giant glass window.

Arthur Sterling. That name was the law in the New York underworld. He was a syndicate boss who was cold, arrogant, and never knew the word mercy. Between his fingers, a cigarette burned. He inhaled deeply, letting the thick smoke fill his lungs before the phone in his shirt pocket vibrated.

Arthur answered the call without a sound. "How is it?"

"Cleaned up, Sir. We have secured the target without a trace," reported the voice on the other end.

A cruel smirk formed at the corner of Arthur's handsome yet deadly lips. "Good. Bring her to the usual place."

The phone call was disconnected unilaterally. Arthur's mind was filled with a vengeance that burned in his chest. Finally, that bitch has fallen into my hands, he thought cynically. Arthur mistakenly thought Flora was the daughter of his past enemy, as well as the woman who had stolen his nephew's lover. He had absolutely no idea that the woman his men captured tonight was a completely different person.

Thirty minutes later, the door to the penthouse room opened. Two of Arthur's men walked in while carrying Flora's still-unconscious body on their shoulders. They laid the small body down on the white king-size bed in the middle of the room.

"Get out," Arthur ordered coldly, without even turning around.

After his men left and locked the door from the outside, Arthur walked over to the bed with a glass of red wine in his hand. His sharp eyes stared at Flora's innocent face, which looked fragile against the white sheets.

"Seems like you are sleeping very soundly, bitch," Arthur whispered, full of deep hatred.

Without a shred of mercy, Arthur splashed the remaining cold wine in his glass right onto Flora's face.

"Ah!"

"Sixty million is a lot of money, Rossi," Arthur rasped, his voice echoing off the damp concrete walls of the tunnel. Blood dripped steadily from his chin, staining his ruined black shirt."It buys a private island, Boss," Rossi laughed, keeping his assault rifle aimed squarely at Arthur's chest. "It buys a new life. And all I have to do is put a bullet in you.""The High Council does not pay traitors," Arthur stated coldly. "They use you to do their dirty work, and then they bury you to tie up loose ends. You are a dead man, Rossi.""I will take my chances," Rossi sneered. "Kill the girl first. I want him to watch her die."The guard standing to Rossi's right shifted his laser sight directly to the center of Flora's forehead.Flora's breath hitched. She gripped Arthur’s arm tighter. She was terrified, but a cold, dark fury began to override her fear. She was tired of men holding guns to her head."Keep him talking," Arthur whispered softly, his lips barely moving against her ear. He forced the barrel upward.Finch pulled the trigger. The gunshot was deafening inside the small, enclosed metal box. The bullet missed Flora’s stomach by an inch, ricocheting off the reinforced steel ceiling and burying itself into the back wall.Arthur twisted the gun barrel violently, trying to snap Finch’s wrist. But Arthur was bleeding out, his strength failing rapidly. Finch fought back, pushing the gun back down toward Flora.Flora did not freeze. She didn't wait for Arthur to save her. The private elevator chimed. The soft, polite ding cut through the blaring security siren like a knife."Marcus, hallway!" Arthur roared, grabbing Flora by the arm and shoving her hard behind the massive, reinforced steel frame of the king-size bed. "Hold the choke point! Do not let them spread out!""Yes, Boss!" Marcus shouted. He dove behind a thick marble pillar near the bedroom entrance, raising his submachine gun."Keep your head down," Arthur ordered Flora, his breathing heavy and ragged. He knelt beside her, resting his pistol on the edge of the mattress, aiming directly at the bedroom doors. "If anyone in a gray uniform crosses that threshold, you shoot to kill."Flora gripped her 9mm pistol with both hands. Her heart pounded violently against her ribs. "I'm ready."A deafening explosion shook the penthouse. The heavy mahogany front doors were blown completely off their hinges, splintering into a thousand pieces of lethal shrapnel. Arthur stared at the glowing screen of his cell phone. His jaw locked so tightly the muscle jumped beneath his skin. He didn't yell. He didn't throw the phone. His silence was far more terrifying than any scream. He slowly turned his head. His dark eyes locked onto Dr. Aris."Who did you tell?" Arthur asked. His voice was a quiet, lethal hiss.Aris took a frantic step backward, his back hitting the bedroom wall. "Nobody! Boss, I came straight up to the penthouse! I swear on my life!"Arthur tossed the phone onto the black silk sheets next to Flora. She looked down at the bright screen. The message from Alistair Finch stared back at her, sealing her death warrant."Finch just texted me," Arthur stated. He raised his 9mm pistol and aimed it directly at the doctor’s face. "He knows the exact results of a scan you ran ten minutes ago in my private home. Explain that to me, Aris. Right now."Aris dropped to his knees, his hands trembling violently. "The machine! Flora stared at him, the air in the luxurious bedroom suddenly turning to ice. Her grip tightened on the black silk sheets."You are insane," Flora breathed, her voice trembling. "I just woke up from toxic shock. Your femoral artery was severed yesterday. You have shattered ribs. You can barely walk without tearing your stitches.""I have enough strength to claim what is mine," Arthur replied. His voice was low, vibrating with a dark, unyielding dominance. He moved closer, his uninjured arm caging her against the headboard. The faint scent of whiskey and medical iodine clung to him. His dark eyes were heavy with unfiltered lust, entirely focused on her mouth."The High Council does not operate on our schedule, Flora," Arthur said, his thumb gently tracing the line of her jaw. "Victor left a very specific message. Silas’s captains are demanding proof of stability. If the Sterling and Finch bloodlines do not merge and produce a legitimate heir, they will declare my takeover invalid. The

Finch did not lower his silver handgun. His finger trembled on the trigger."She poisoned herself!" Finch yelled, his gray eyes wild with fury. "It is a trick! Look at her! She is dying on your floor, Victor!"Arthur dropped to his knees, completely ignoring the tearing pain in his own stitched chest. He grabbed Flora’s shoulders and pulled her limp body against him. Her skin was burning hot. Her lips were pale, and her breathing was dangerously shallow."Get a medic!" Arthur roared, glaring at Victor. "Now!""Drop the gun, Alistair," Victor repeated. He did not yell. His voice was a flat, lethal command. "The machine verified the DNA. The woman in Arthur's arms is Elena Finch. The bloodline is confirmed.""I buried my daughter!" Finch spat."You buried a stranger," Victor corrected smoothly. "And if you pull that trigger, you will join her. My guards have fifty rifles aimed at your chest. Do you really want to die tonight because you cannot accept you lost your leverage?"Finch looke
