“Is that true?”

My father’s voice didn’t rise.

It didn’t need to.

The entire ballroom went silent anyway.

I felt it instantly—like the air had been sucked out of the room and replaced with something heavy and suffocating.

My throat went dry.

Bianca stiffened beside me so sharply I thought she might collapse.

And Alessio…

Alessio didn’t move at all.

He just stood there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Like he already knew this moment was coming.

My father’s eyes locked onto him.

Then onto me.

Then back to Alessio again.

“I asked you a question,” Don Dante Moretti repeated slowly.

Don Dante Moretti

The silence stretched.

Too long.

Too sharp.

And in that silence, I felt Bianca’s hand tighten around mine like a lifeline.

Alessio finally spoke.

“Yes,” he said calmly.

One word.

That was all.

My stomach dropped instantly.

No hesitation.

No denial.

No attempt to soften it.

Just… yes.

A murmur spread through the room immediately.

Whispers.

Confusion.

Suspicion.

My mother blinked in shock. “Yes… what exactly?”

Alessio’s gray eyes shifted slightly—just enough to find mine.

And hold.

“Lucia and I have met before,” he said evenly.

My heart slammed painfully against my ribs.

That was not what I expected him to say.

Not even close.

My father’s gaze sharpened instantly.

“Explain.”

Alessio didn’t look away from me.

Not once.

“We crossed paths briefly,” he continued. “Before tonight.”

A pause.

My chest tightened.

The room felt too small suddenly.

Too bright.

Too exposed.

Bianca’s breathing beside me became uneven.

And I knew.

She knew too.

Alessio wasn’t lying.

But he wasn’t telling the truth either.

Because “briefly” was the biggest understatement of my life.

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“You met my daughter… without my knowledge?”

“Yes.”

The answer was simple.

Too simple.

Dangerously simple.

My father didn’t like simple answers.

Neither did Roman Romano.

I felt it before I saw him move.

A shift in attention.

Across the room, the Romano head stepped forward slightly.

Roman Romano

His expression remained calm, but his eyes were calculating now.

Always calculating.

“And yet,” Roman said slowly, “you didn’t mention this earlier.”

Alessio finally looked away from me.

Just briefly.

“To avoid unnecessary complications.”

That word.

Complications.

My throat tightened.

Because I knew exactly what he meant.

I was the complication.

Not Bianca.

Me.

My father exhaled sharply.

“Lucia,” he called suddenly.

I flinched.

Every head turned toward me instantly.

I forced myself to step forward.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

When I reached my father, I stopped.

“Yes, Papa.”

Silence.

Then—

“Did you meet him before tonight?”

My heart pounded so hard I was sure everyone could hear it.

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Behind me, I felt Alessio’s gaze again.

Heavy.

Warning.

Waiting.

Bianca squeezed my hand slightly from behind.

Please.

That single pressure said everything.

Protect me.

So I swallowed hard.

“Yes,” I whispered.

A collective reaction rippled through the room.

My father didn’t react immediately.

He just stared at me.

Like he was trying to read every secret I had ever kept.

“Where?” he asked.

My mind raced violently.

Think.

Think fast.

“London,” I said quickly. “At a gathering.”

A lie.

But not a completely impossible one.

My father studied me for a long moment.

Then shifted his gaze back to Alessio.

“You didn’t think this was important information to share?”

Alessio’s tone remained perfectly steady.

“It didn’t affect the arrangement.”

My stomach twisted.

Arrangement.

Not marriage.

Not relationship.

Arrangement.

Like Bianca was a contract.

A transaction.

Bianca flinched beside me.

I felt it.

And it broke something in my chest.

My father nodded slowly.

Then suddenly clapped his hands once.

The sound was sharp.

Final.

“Enough,” he said firmly. “Tonight is not for interrogation.”

Relief barely had time to settle before he continued.

“The engagement proceeds.”

Bianca’s breath caught instantly.

No.

No no no.

Not like this.

My chest tightened painfully.

But before anyone could react—

Roman stepped forward again.

“Actually,” he said calmly.

My father turned toward him immediately.

“Yes?”

Roman’s gaze shifted slowly across the room.

Until it landed on me.

And stayed there.

Longer than necessary.

“I have a suggestion.”

The entire room went still again.

My stomach dropped.

Something about his tone—

it wasn’t casual.

It wasn’t polite.

It was deliberate.

Calculated.

My father narrowed his eyes. “What kind of suggestion?”

Roman smiled faintly.

The kind of smile that never meant anything good.

“A clarification,” he said smoothly. “About the arrangement.”

Alessio’s jaw tightened slightly for the first time.

Just barely.

But I noticed.

Bianca noticed too.

And that terrified me more.

Roman continued.

“My son is engaged to your daughter Bianca.”

“Yes,” my father said slowly.

Roman’s eyes didn’t leave mine.

“But it appears,” he added, “there is another daughter who has already… formed a connection with him.”

My blood ran cold.

No.

No, no, no.

This was going somewhere dangerous.

My father’s gaze snapped back to me.

“What connection?”

My mouth went dry instantly.

Alessio finally spoke again.

His voice was quiet.

Controlled.

But sharper now.

“It’s irrelevant.”

Roman raised a hand slightly.

“Is it?”

The question hung in the air like a blade.

Then he turned slightly toward Alessio.

“I don’t make alliances on uncertainty.”

My heart slammed painfully.

What did that mean?

Bianca squeezed my hand harder.

Too hard.

My father’s expression darkened.

“Speak clearly, Roman.”

Roman nodded once.

Then said the words that shattered everything.

“If your daughter Lucia is already involved with my heir…”

A pause.

A slow, intentional pause.

“…then perhaps she should be the one standing beside him.”

Silence.

Complete silence.

For half a second, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

My brain refused to process what I just heard.

Then—

explosion.

My mother gasped loudly.

Bianca went completely rigid.

My father’s face darkened instantly.

And Alessio—

Alessio finally turned fully toward me.

Not Bianca.

Me.

His gaze burned through me like fire.

And then, in a voice only I could fully feel—

he said:

“Lucia.”

Just my name.

But it felt like a claim.

My pulse spiked violently.

My father stepped forward immediately.

“What did you just say?”

Roman didn’t even look at him.

His attention stayed on me.

“I said,” he repeated calmly, “that I may have chosen the wrong daughter.”

The room erupted instantly.

Voices.

Shouting.

Confusion.

Anger.

But I couldn’t hear any of it.

Because Alessio had taken one slow step toward me.

And in that moment—

I realized something terrifying.

This wasn’t just an engagement anymore.

This was a war.

And I was standing in the middle of it.

“Lucia,” Alessio said again, softer this time.

My breath caught.

His eyes darkened slightly.

And then he said the final words that made my entire world collapse:

“I think you’re mine.”
